Ever wanted to go underground in old, overgrown, coastal defence bunkers hidden in the forest? Well here on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula near Port Angeles I do, and it’s super interesting. The largest WWII-era battery is even drive through, and open to the public. These lookouts and military forts were part of protecting the Juan de Fuca Strait and Puget Sound from naval attack. I document the history and how these spots have changed over the many years that has passed since their use.
Thanks for watching!

7:32 "I LOVE A$$" 😂 Lately your videos showcase an almost post-apocalyptic aesthetic and I think it's just the best. These abandoned places are really interesting, beautiful, and historical! War is terrifying, but there's something reassuring about nature reclaiming those spaces as best as it can. Thanks for sharing these experiences with the world. Give Nina a pat and scratch from me. ❤

Thanks Brian! Yeah I like to visit these spots with post-apocalyptic looks, of course the real event would be undesirable and awful, but just overgrown and forgotten places from history that look like film sets or science fiction stories are very interesting to me.

This is great, good job exploring those dark bunkers by yourself. My mind would go rampant with what could be behind me haha!

Such a great job, once again, of highlighting the best of the Olympic Peninsula! I love the shot from Battery 249. I lived on the beach in a travel trailer near the Agate Beach Lodge my senior year of high school. Worked at the campground there when it was leased by American Campgrounds Inc. Such grand memories! Thank you, Luke.

Fort Worden in Port Townsend is similar, and in much better shape. For folks who want to check out this history, highly recommend Fort Worden.

We have them also Luke. We have them out at UBC overlooking Wreck Beach. The museum of anthropology was built on top of one. the tunnels still exist underneath.

Gosh ! Again with living a Far Cry scene ! I visited a few such gun emplacements down under. Funnily enough, some stretch back to the 1870's, when New Zealand feared they would be invaded by Russia ! The latter was based upon a newspaper article that pretended Auckland was attacked. Plus ca change...plus la meme chose.

This was really good ! As I’ve lived most of my life in Port Angeles it was one of my hobbies to locate and photograph old military bunkers and emplacements! Starting with Fort Casey then Marrowstone island then west to Fort Worden and battery hill and on to Camp Hayden and Striped Peak and above Agate Beach resort which has been privately owned since 1950 something! Traveling west via highway 112 to Majestic area for the next one then to West Twin river on the west side of the river ( that was a lot of brush whacking ) and by accident I found a second one by the black steel vent pipes on top ! There are more traveling west ! It’s great history , I’ve always liked finding the remote ones , map, compass and later GPS ! You did a great job !

@@black_eagle Half a mile west of West twin river bridge on a point on the ridge is first bunker looking at the straits and down on highway 112 ! Second one I found by more accident , it’s further west by maybe 3/4 mile from the first one , I hiked up an old grade that went South off Highway 112 into that area , pretty overgrown now after all these years ! I noticed 2 black pipes on top of a mound mixed in with alder so I went to investigate and it was a spotter bunker ! From the highway I was perhaps an hours hike up the old grade !

I did not have my GPS at the time with me when I found the second bunker west of the first one , but as a crow flies they are less than a mile apart , more like 3/4 mile !

@black_eagle 4 месяца назад
@@normanmallory2055 OK, the second one sounds like Twin bunker, up the hill south of 112. Did it look like this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VAlqk85-qEw.html Not sure about the first one though. Is there a road or trail to it? Is it on the old railroad grade? I've been to every bunker on the old 1940s military maps, but I haven't heard of this one so I'm very curious. Thanks.

@@black_eagle Most bunkers for WWII period ( spotter / observation ones are mostly from the same blueprint) I find very little difference between them , like the one you are inside of !
