This is the cross generational international dance anthem. I’ve witnessed this played around the world at a variety of venues and as soon as the piano is heard people who aren’t already dancing throw their arms up and dance! Brilliant to have witnessed this so many times!
And no auto tune! Just real genuine talent! Well said, it was an innocent time relatively, a sweet time, in music and in our country. ABBA was huge and so much fun to hear at a club. Yes, older person here: was 19 when this came out in 1976, and it brings back memories of a special time.
I'm one of the "old" ones, and you're right, this is very nostalgic for me. Takes me way way back to my teenage years. One of my ABBA faves. I grew up with all their songs and each one is significant to my journey from young adult to adulthood. Beautiful music. Never tire of ABBA. Thanks for the reaction.
I’m only 13 and this is like my favorite song of all time plus I am a diehard ABBA fan. I have the single/45 for this song plus all 8 albums. Hope you enjoy the rest of their songs!
Danced with the date of my dreams at the high school dance in 1977 to this one. Takes me right back to that innocent wonderful time. Had a thing for Agnetha too! ;-)
The Perfect Pop song. Everyone has their dancing queen moment. Its like an epiphany. It could be in a club, at the Opera, at a concert even at home. It's the moment when you the music fills your very soul and lifts you high l.
More hooks than a fishing store! this song is so catchy yet with such a complex arrangement, they make it seem simple but that's what happens when you're this brilliant, more hits than a 12 round boxing match lol, loove ABBA in case it wasn't obvious.
I was in my 20's when they came out. They were unique and different. Not to mention they sing wonderfully. They certainly had their string of hits but I will always remember this one first.
I love ABBA, grew up listening to their songs via my mother, aunts & uncle, their songs weren't only catchy but meaningful and emotional at the same time, even their slow tempo songs were great, their transition from 70's to 80's style music also was taking place which they did quite well to adapt to both eras of old rock & folk music to new rock & disco vibe, it's bands like these that transcends generations and bring in new fans is knowing how to adapt to new styles
I was just ten when fernando hit Australian radio and it was played over and over , And There was Beatlemania in the sixties and Abba mania in 70s . So many artists and legendary albums released . My daughter whos a millennial really loves the music too
no one does a song like abba they have the catchiest songs lyrically and musically thats why they have a wide appeal worldwide also because of all the different genres they made there own and the european influenced music like fernando and italian spanish today you have artists like Camila Cabello doing havana and justin bieber doing despacito abba were the first to do that kind of music on the charts.
Greetings from Australia, Dereck. I've been an ABBA fan since their heyday in 1976, and to this day, I still love 'Dancing Queen' as a great pick-up on a bad day, and the joy of the song enhances a great time. They were extremely popular in Australia for about 2½ years from 1975 to 1977, and the fandom was feverish here to the extent that they called it 'ABBAmania' (just like 'Beatlemania' a decade before), there were times that there were three of their songs in the top 5; Fernando stayed at number 1 for 14 weeks; there were TV specials - even one of our TV Stations brought them out to Australia to record a couple of TV specials, and so many other amazing feats. Here's a link to a clip of 'Dancing Queen' live in Sydney, from 'ABBA the Movie', where the concert parts were filmed in cities around Australia. ABBA were very popular with kids and their parents and their grandparents, so you'll see a lot of kids in the audience too (who'd all be, on average, in their 50s now, like me ...lol). I went to a rainy concert they had outdoors in Sydney Showground, and regardless of the sogginess, the crowd stayed, and it was a fantastic night. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DPTUH9dzhoM.html By the way, I'm really enjoying your ABBA reviews, and it's great to see you enjoy ABBA so much. Could you *please* review these two ABBA songs (hint-hint ...lol), also from 'ABBA the Movie', that are both very different from each other, but I think are two of the best complete-performances from that film... "Why Did It Have To Be Me", sung by Björn & Frida (this showcases Frida's wonderful showpersonship and fun sense of humour): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UNCDt51cwLs.html (Agnetha's not on stage then, as she's changing costumes for the next song, which was called 'Thank You For The Music'); and a song that has great vocal dynamics (especially in the chorus), called 'He Is Your Brother': ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6ZXPkgJcwZQ.html Cheers.
LOW notes in the verse to the HIGHEST notes in the chorus. Bjorn and Benny said they got the girls to hit notes they didn't think they could. Frida said she cried when she first heard the demo tape of the melody; it was that good.
i am 57 and i loved growing up on this music . i spent so many Saturday nights at the skating rink enjoying ABBA , Bee Gees , Jackson 5 and so on . loved growing up in that era . we were also introduced to a lot of great Motown music and such from the 60's because that is what our parents growup on . such a fun time .
"Older folks", lol, I are one!! I was 14 in '76 and yes, in retrospect, was a pretty innocent era, regardless of problems...it was a time of honesty, evident in the truthfulness of music lyrics, tv programs, etc... Society was much.more kind and social, in general...sadly, have lost too much of that as the "norm" today...
I'm a singer and sung at a variety of venues and this song was one of my popular songs that people would jump up to and dance, they absolutely love it. Along with waterloo and ring ring.
BEAUTIFUL SONG 👍👍👍 BEAUTIFUL PERFORMANCE 👌👌👌 BEAUTIFUL VIDEO 👏👏👏 🅰️🅱️🅱️🅰️ IS THE BEST 🤟🤟🤟
OK, I'll bite, what was the ultimatum? Did it work, were their demands met? Just curious, because I never heard of an ultimatum delivered through a popular disco song before. Cheers!
🧡 ABBA ! 1976. And the song synonymous with ABBA - a huge hit for the group. But you probably already know that. You just can't quit ABBA, can you? No shame in that. Onto the next reaction...
You should do a reaction to their best and final album The Visitors, it's totally un-ABBA like. Had they decided to continue as a working band you will see the direction they could've taken their music: synthpop. They've already laid down the groundwork for electro dance pop with Lay All Your Love On Me.
@Marvin Morawski agreed. When I see the Rolling Stones, Eagles, Roger Waters, Deep Purple still touring, but not releasing any relevant new songs. Abba retired at the peak of their creativity. That was a bold and brave move
This song was one of Queen Elizabeth II favourite songs when ever she was at a party when it was playing she always danced so people could say they have seen a dancing Queen ❤
The live versions from 1977 and 1979, are good videos also, I’d recommend watching them, the 77 tour (White & Gold I like to call it!) is Abba at their peak, Dancing Queen is the ultimate live performance. This was Number 1 for 6 weeks in UK in 1976.
Abba wrote this song in response to George McCrae's'Rock your baby'. They wanted a chart hit like that! Although they sang many moving songs, their legacy is unfinished. Clarity of the lyrics and female vocal range are extraordinary.
FYI Sorry Google translator On June 18, 1976, the group performed the song at a televised gala from the Royal Opera in Stockholm, dedicated to King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and Silvia Sommerlath, who was to get married the next day in the Great Church in Stockholm. Dancing Queen was not written for the royal wedding with Queen Silvia as inspiration; they chose to perform the new song at the TV gala because the title and "queen theme" fit right then. Dancing Queen was released as a single only two months after the royal wedding. This was also not the first time the group performed the song. In the spring of 1976, the group performed the song in television broadcasts on both German and Japanese television
Michael Jordan used to say he was plaing Dancing Queen 4 times before stepping on the court and that song was what help him become the player number one.
"A bailar, a girar - sabes reír y vibrar. Miren bien, allí va, como una reina ya..." The ABBA LP issued in Spanish-speaking territories, "Gracias Por La Música" came out when I was learning Spanish at school in the north of England. "Y aunque sabes coquetear - te interesa sólo bailar..."
Takes me back!! you should watch "ABBA - The Movie" which was a semi-documentary film done while they were on their Australian Tour...........they were HUGE in Australia!!! It's cheesy and stuff, but shows a lot of their shows which they played songs that weren't "A Side" hits. Noice!!! xxooxx
it's amazing how fresh this song still feels considering how hijacked it's been over the years. I'll bet you there is someone someplace out there who has Dancing Queen as his ring tone.
It came out in 1976 when our king married queen Silvia. They performed it the night before for the first time. There is a video of that too, complete with them in 18th c. Costumes.
Hope, joy and promises of an adventures eve/night, the ultimate bright side of life song. This will be evergreen when God himself feels old or something
I must confess that for many years I tried that those ABBA songs didn't like so much.... but it's impossible.... it's kinda addiction.... great work Dereck
It's funny to listen to your comments since you weren't even born at that time. From autotune and overhyped beats times, it must look quite refreshing retrieving THE disco classic. My older cousins (I was just 11) said this was "the anthem for us chicks" to hit the dance floor and show off for the hesitating boys... Girl power yes, all through and since then!
I was 17 when this song was released in 1976. I never liked dancing, not even to this song because I've always felt dancing by non dancers was kind of cringing and creepy. But yes, this brings back a lot of fond memories.
If you like 90s pop/dance music, have you listened to Alison Limerick's 'Where Love Lives'? A night club classic in the UK to this day...don't know how well it did in New Jersey back in the day ;)
