You can tell the producing of the song here is superb done by someone with a great feeling for the art of producing music. Don't know how many times i've heard this song lately. I was hooked immediately after listening to it only one time. No one has the feeling to do this kind of production today ABBA was way ahead of their time. Pioneers indeed.
Another amazing, emotional ABBA song... Every time I hear it, I get chills from the memories flooding back from way back in 1978, when I was just a little boy... I guess the human brain works in mysterious way. ;)
I also like hard rock and metal, but unexplicably had a place in my favorite songs for several ABBA songs and this is by far the best one. They don't get the credit they deserve as rockers
Well, I don't know how but I'd never heard this one until yesterday when I put on ABBA Gold on a whim after hearing about their comeback. Fantastic. I've already jammed along to it on Chordify a few times as I play guitar. Love it. Say what you like about them, they are all supremely talented and the girls' singing has always been sensational.
Benny Andersson have always embraced the Scandinavian melancholia, it shines trough in so much of his material. ABBA has carried so many timeless songs on their shoulders, trough the 70's and 80's they made music history that stood the test of time. Not very common these days. As a kid I was so hypnotized by "Eagle", remember playing it over and over again. Kinda makes me both sad and exited at the same time, still to this day.
When I discovered this song as a teen I was really shocked. I just couldn't stop playing it. I couldn't believe ABBA's music could be so complex. I had a similar reaction to "Im a Marionette"
I first heard this as a teenager. Like you I have always sensed there is a particularly Nordic undercurrent in it - you call it melancholy - it just makes me think of pale northern light and darkness. It’s a masterpiece and I have loved it more and more with the passing of time.
My mum loved abba and when she passed I listened to abba a lot to remind me of her……..they were so far ahead of their time…..disco would not have happened unless of them and this track (my favourite) smacks completely of prog rock and New Romantic…..it’s just breathtaking…..now I just love listening to there music not just because of my mum but for the quality of the music
This track especially takes me back to my mid teens ... a wonderful song that trully does take you on a journey ... the journey of an Eagle - "over mountains and forest's and seas" ... Magical indeed.
One of my absolute favorites from the first time I heard it. I am really taken by the music. I think of my daughter who I lost in 2018 when I hear this.

The melodies and harmonies on this track are very intricate, which give it a mysterious and out of this world sound. Well done ABBA, definitely one of your best!!!!
Björn, Benny along with their producer Michael B. Tretow were very creative in the way they recorded their albums. Tretow was heavily influenced by Phil Spector and his "wall of sound".

@denverrichard1 Hi! Evidently, we seem to share the same viewpoint. Even though I am Venezuelan, I too recognized the amerindian influence in this song. I have enjoyed listening to it since I first came to find it. The lyric speaks of this bird's freedom and what it stands for, I could imagine myself flying thru the sky just like a magnificent eagle.

well, this song would be a great metal hymn, wouldn´t it? it has kind of suitable structure and all for that style.. you can check the live version also, it´s rocky as hell and contains three minute long guitar solo..!!

I'm a huge heavy metal fan... but I *love* songs like this one. Definitely up there with The Winner Takes It All... and it only made it onto their second GH album.
