There is now. You should hear some of their new stuff. Yeah, that's right. They've reformed and made a new album and it's stunning, what I always wanted Abba to be.
American Indian rhythms / melodies give that vines to this song !! Not to mention, the gorgeous mysterious lyrics !! I love singing this song ! 🎵 👍💜🥁🐉🎤🎶💞
Sweden, Sweden, Sweden, what talents you create! What is it with this little country in the North? Answer: one of their treasures is / has been that they have a natural aptitude for singing and for music in general. It is in their genes. See for example "allsång på Skansen", Stockholm, where they meet and sing together once a week in the summertime. And their people's soul goes very, very deep. ABBA was one of the very first artists to be known outside of Scandinavia. A big hug from Norway, neighbour of Sweden.
Most progressiv song of the ABBA era, and because of that, it never got the deserved recognition. The mainstream wanted "true" ABBA-songs, say easy listening and dancing all the way. Eagle is one of the more elevating songs, can make you high without drugs.
Eagle, faboulous song, one of their best! You don't need any drugs when listening to Eagle. Just close your eyes and listen. And you will be flying high, high...
The long version has the guitarsolo and the longer instrumental outro. The end part is so great with that marvelous guitarsolo that flows from right to left in the stereo image.
Listen carefully from 7'45" (preferably with headphones) and you can hear the eagle fly from left, overhead, to right and back again. Quite wonderful. This is a rather marvellous song, beautifully crafted, sang and orchestrated.
Damn. I never thought that you would react to the long version after having seen the short one. This is my favorite ABBA song ever. Shout-out to the person over at Patreon who made this possible.
Einfach nur großartig wie du mein Lieber, auf die genialen Songs von Abba reagierst. Diese Band ist die beste Band allerzeiten für viele Millionen Fans!🥰😍🤩
In the 1980s, I first heard this song on "ABBA The Album" and it did its magic on me, instantly. Yes, very elevating - that's the effect it had (and still has) on me, too. By the way, the second part of the chorus (at 05:05, for example, with the brief dropping of the meloidy on the word "high") sounds like an eagle gliding, flapping its wings two times and then gliding again. What a mastery of sound symbolism! :-)
Will always remember the feeling of listening to this song frist time. I couldn't be more than 8. I had snuck into ny brothers room and this song was ready to play. 🎼🎵🎶 Ah, that first experience of goosebumps created by sound.😍🥰 #ABBAforever
Soaring with tears in my eyes. That early guitar glissando, the reverb on the tingling guitar, the wailing flute, the ethereal strings You don't want it to end.
Its musical pleasure of the highest level...and so is ABBas other music as well......its just a music on a level of its own and it will never be surpassed..the music, like this tune, touches the soul and heart so much more then any other music can do.
I'm so happy you revisited this one! It's probably in my top 5 ABBA songs. It's so different from their other songs, ABBA goes psychedelic and I love it. The atmosphere they created is just out of this world, I really feel like I'm flying. I feel so free and all stress and anxiety inside me just disappears.
How could i not fall in love with the breathtaking beauty of Agnetha n Frida while rewatching this!First time i saw "The Movie"(where parts of this clip are included) was in my early teens and couldn't escape the excitement.I recall that for a whole fortnight, kept dreaming both of them singing to this adventurous song with their icon in my mind and then wrapped them in my heart till... now and maybe forever.I'll never escape Abba.Once again THANK YOU DERECK!
Many years later after Abba went to hiatus The Human League revealed that they had kinda used the keyboard line of "Eagle" to their smash "Don't you want me?".Frontman Phil Oakey was an open fan and didn't care to admit at times it was uncool to say so.
This has also the best and unique (synthesizer) intro in pop music. Even the guitar, this also has soft synthesizer sound through the whole song, should included the best synthesizer series released in 80's/90's. The best listening experience you get from old vinyl LP with headphones. ;)
Thank you so much for doing, finally, the long original version of Eagle! You cannot imagin how happy you have made me! This is great, Dereck. One of the best ABBA songs! :)
If you listen to how ABBA developped from 1975 til 1978, you just know why that had to stop making music from 1981 on. Pop just couldnt satisfy them anymore. They had run in front of the development of pop music for some years, and pop culture could not follow them anymore at that time. They were just too good, in so many ways! Eagle was the first proof, The Day B4 u Came and The Visitors the last: they had exceeded the boundaries of pop music.
"Eagle" is ABBA's longest song, almost six minutes It is the opening song of his fifth album, entitled "ABBA The Album" (1977), which coincides with the edition and premiere of his film ABBA The Movie "(1977), which records ABBA's memorable tour in Australia and the entire ABBAmania "Eagle" was released as a single in a few countries, it's a pity that wasn't the chance to be the third single of "The Album" in UK (follow "The name of the Game" & "Take a chance on me") I go back to "ABBA The Album" After the spectacular worldwide success with "Dancing Queen" and their album "Arrival" this more versatile album and more experimental music followed, with more elaborate and deep lyrics, all the songs are of different genres, different from each other, fantastic, for me it is their best album includes the great hit "Take a chance on me", the bizarre rock "Hole in your soul", the mystical "Move on", the mini musical with the classic "Thank you for the music", each song is a must! My suggestion is very special react to all the full album "The Album" (as you did with "Voyage") It's all full masterpieces Kind regards from Buenos Aires, Argentina South América
Hello Argentina 🇦🇷 ❤️ I am planning to visit your country in the near future !!! It's been in my bucket list since I was a kid !! This is my all time favourite to sing from Abba songs ! Dancing Queen as well ! Lots of hugs from Los Angeles to you & Argentina 🇦🇷 ❤️ I am Japanese. 👍👍💜🥁🐉🎤🎶💕💞
@@spark_6710 What beautiful news! Thank you very much for your words Although here in Argentina we are experiencing a deep political and economic crisis, it has very good people and beautiful natural beauties to meet: Iguazu Falls (unique in the world), Bariloche and the southern lakes, Cordoba and its mountains, Merlo and its privileged microclimate, Mendoza and the Andes, etc. I will be at your disposal for whatever you need to know about my homeland and accompanied by the music of ABBA, here was a colossal success "Chiquitita"
@@eduardooscar309 OMG ! I left my reply here earlier & it's gone !? I said too many things . Lol. I grew up watching Mario Kempes. I love Messi. I am gonna visit Argentina in 3, 4 years from now w/ mom. I'd love to visit the waterfalls as I've always been loving waterfalls, but mom isn't too crazy about waterfalls & she's got mobility issues ! So ,our activities will be limited. We're gonna be visiting Bueno Aires in November my birth month . Then go to Mendoza for the museum for the dragon's fossile you have there !! Then come back to Bueno Aires ,stay there for a week watching Argentine Tango, drinking Argentine coffee w/ mom, although I am a huge tea drinker !! Lol. Hopefully a football game ,too ! Then watch the beautiful Jacaranda trees in bloom in Bueno Aires ! Then fly to North .Visit Patagonia & Then a Welsh village Gaiman for a Welsh tea there ! Stay in the area for a week or so if we can. Fly back to Bueno Aires ,stay there for another week ,or two ! That's my plan so far ! It seems a bit difficult to visit the Welsh village from the glacier w/ o a car .I am thinking of catching a bus for us ! @@spark_6710 It's great all the program you're doing and with so much preparation time about Buenos Aires our coffee is good, but usually imported from Brazil or Colombia We Argentines, like our Uruguayan neighbors, drink mate as a regular infusion, it is friendly and to share (more so now that the covid pandemic has lost its intensity). there are beautiful places to see and dance tango (I'm learning now) and to watch football, it is a must to visit La Bombonera, the Boca Juniors iconic stadium, the most popular club in Argentina Well, let's hope that by the time you travel here there will be another government and the situation will be more stable. are you from November? Interesting note: ABBA's producers filmed every moment of ABBA's tours, etc., and this is why we have so many music videos of ABBA. The 70s didn't have music videos like today. Very forward thinking of ABBA and its producers.
Rumours say that Eagle will be included in the Voyage Abbatar show. If it's true I will be flying higher and higher rest of my life. I have tickets in September
I LOVE ABBA and Eagle... ❤️ Please Dereck reacts One Night in Bangkok or I Know him so well...both songs from de musical CHESS....Kisses of Fire Dereck ❤️❤️
This music video looks like it is in widescreen .This video was in the the movie, ABBA the movie , the elevator in the video is when a reporter is interviewing then for a radio special he is doing. This was shot during ABBA Australia tour in 1977.
It had nothing to do with the Eagles although it was a runout back then . Bjorn said he had just read the novel John Livingston Seagull and there he took the inspiration . There were also seagulls mention on the same album on Move on
Yes actually that the truth! But even though twasn't a tribute to The Eagles it was influenced by bands like them and the American music scene at the time. That's how the whole album that followed "Arrival"'s Euro-pop had diff vibes and sounded rockier, more sophisticated and progressive.
I was at a beach resort in the Italian Riviera back in 1978 when I first heard Eagle. Actually, it was the video, and it was aired in an Italian television music show. It stopped me on my tracks. I was completely mesmerized by it. It remains one of my favorite songs of all time by any band. That guitar interlude breaching the the 3rd chorus is absolutely breathtakingly beautiful.
I am really very glad you gave this song a 2nd chance. I have loved this song all my life....it's like a dream sequence. Many of ABBA's darker songs do require a 2nd or 3rd listen before they start to grow on you. Such magnificent musicians and singers they truly are....both in the 70's, 80's and still today. ABBA is the reason why I drive a Volvo (my 4th) and went to visit Stockholm in May of 2013 for the opening of ABBA: THE MUSEUM. That city and all of the country of Sweden is just so beautiful and so very glorious. More so than even Paris or France. And the people are a whole lot more friendly and welcoming to Americans as well! And for any newer fans of ABBA, get all of their albums and listen to all the songs...not just the radio hits we all know. You will find many surprises. Please don't judge ABBA just by the song or the musical Ma Ma Mia. I can assure you they go much deeper and are far more serious musicians than just that.
Glad you listened a second time to this wonderful song. You feel like you are floating like an eagle high up in the clouds and a total feeling of freedom ... Thank you Dereck, always just as fascinating to hear and see your reactions!🎵🎶⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Hello Michael, ABBA - The Movie was filmed in 1977 and the first short cut of "EAGLE" was done for a german single issue in 1978 where it reached No. 9 of the german charts.
So happy you've redone your Eagle reaction. There are quite a few different edits, all of which butcher the track, and you probably listened to the worst one! The album version is in my Top 10 ABBA songs, it just takes me away to a different dimension. It really makes me feel like I am riding along with the eagle on that breeze.
One of the very best ABBA songs, and probably the closest vocally making it virtually impossible to seperate Agnetha and Fridas vocals. I remember the first timeI heard it was watching 'ABBA - The Movie' in a small cinema when it had just been released nationally in the UK. Never understood why they made the awful edit for radio when the single was released in a limited amount of territories, or why the single wasnt issued in the UK or USA, where i think it would have changed a lot of opinions. Also never understood why they filmed a promo video for it when they had the awesome scene from The Movie yet other singles never got visuals. I guess it was all down to timing and availability. For the lyrics Bjorn was inspired by the Richard Bach book 'Jonathan Livingstone Seagull' and demostrates freedom. Apprently it was included in the 1979 tour setlist because both Agnetha and Frida loved singing it and all the guitar work is by Janne Schaffer and Lasse Wellander who worked with ABBA throughout their career.
Agree' about "Eagle"'s "Movie" clip.Should have kept this since it's a magical promo.Dereck's gotta react to the whole film.I' m sure we will all enjoy.
At 8 years old, this was the first ABBA song that I ever heard back in 2004 when we were learning about Vikings in school. The teacher put this in during the lesson. From that day on, ABBA gained a new fan. One of their best songs. Brings back great school/childhood memories for me.
Thank you very much for this video, you haven't done reactions to ABBA for a decent period of time! I think every ABBA song is just pure magic (yes, I am a fan of them and I am still biased, but still :D). The live version of Eagle is also amazing which includes a tremendously gorgeous guitar solo.
Ahhh my friend, you get there in the end. Eagle is a grower in my opinion, and it IS that extra middle instrumental and at the end that makes it. Takes a couple of listens but once it's there - it'll never leave you. And somewhat of a watershed moment and a turn in their output and what is to come.
I started getting into ABBA in 1977. The Album was their first new release after I started listening to them. I remember taking my stereo speakers, putting them face to face and laying down with my head in between them. What an audio experience!!!!
To those who don't know, ABBA have actually reformed... after 40 years and have made a new album and all I can say after 40 years... is that it was hell worth the wait. ru-vid.com/group/PLxA687tYuMWiaZm97zAKxm6AGNVEWBm9F
I love the guitar solo at the end generates the image of an eagle hovering before going into a dive with brilliant stereo imagery. One of my favourites.
Great reaction to a great song that I think often gets overlooked and forgotten. It brings back memories of my childhood listening to my parents ABBA Greatest Host LP (yes vinyl, before even CDs were a thing). I was just looking through your ABBA playlist and can't see Angel Eyes. If you've not already reacted to it please have a listen to this one, is another one that is often forgotten k think. If you have already reacted to it please add it to your playlist.
He has reacted to Angeleyes and I can see it in his playlist but some other reactions are/were invisible since a few days. With me it was "The King Has Lost His Crown" which is back again meanwhile but "Voulez-Vous" is still not visible for me. Perhaps it is a youtube problem because it's also at the channel from Musikladen, that some videos are invisible, though they are there.
Synth magic plus that abba third voice, this and i wonder are my abba favourites both from ( The Album ) The difference….about two mins extra instrumentation thats important to the “feel” of the song……..If you go down the road of “The Eagles” ya gotta do Glen Frey’s favourites ….One of These Nights…..and…….I Can’t Tell You Why.
Eagle - it's actually not the "long version" but the album version. the original. The edits were done to make the song radio friendly and it got slaughtered... imagine The Day Before You Came cut off 2minutes.... Eagle is problably in my top5 sometimes my absolute fave song. Abba never sounded so mature, progressive, yet ABBA, third voice all over, hymnic and no bubble gum pop at all... the instrumentation is beyond anything they'd done before or after.... yes great songs were about to come, but many got a very simple arrangement... Eagle is everything and better. i think the interlude is shortened and the end of course is missing... over 2 minutes are cut out....
Agreed the edit for single release in selected countries was a big mistake and never understood why it wasnt an international single as I always thought it would have done well in the UK and USA.
@@123billydog musically i don't like the edit versions at all, but at the time, even on german radio a 5min+ song rarely got airplay... so on radio it might have been ok to produce some edit, but the single you could purchase should have had the original album version on it... but they.. we were lucky here. It was all over the radio and a sizable top 10 hit. Of course backed by the wonderful tv appearance in may on starparade where they did Take A Chance On Me, Eagle and Thank You For The Music, which eventually got a lot of airplay too becoming a signature in its own right without being release as a side... As i understood it was - with a few exception always the individual decision of the local record company if and when they'd release a single. Abba had unlike other bands a different label in almost every country. As far as i know they could pick whatever they wanted as a single release as long as ABBA did not object... and of course if there was a pre-album single offered there was no choice for the records labels to release something else: Fernando, Dancing Queen, The Name Of The Game, Gimme Gimme Gimme, The Winner Takes It All. Exceptopn with the last album as the lead single was released simultanously with the album.. that's how it ended up different lead singles statesside and in Europe. So it was not ABBA's decision to not release Eagle in the UK, but their record label did not see the potential...same goes for Summer Night City, Chiquitita (eventually released much later in 1979), and Gimme Gimme Gimme in the US. The record company messed up a bit... They had a huge hit with Take A Chance On Me and the US record label did not manage to come up with a follow up hit.... only a year later when Does Your Mother Know was released.... Germany and most of continental Europe was lucky in that respect as most potential singles had been released and on top were hits.... here even Honey Honey, So Long and I Do I Do were hits...
Biggest ABBA fan and EAGLE 🦅 has always been my absolute favourite! It is a clear definition that ABBA was so ahead of their time. Still the ABBA sound and a good rock 🎸 section. From what I remember, the song is a tribute to the group The Eagles. And @dereckreacts, that ABBA poster you have is the pic used for the intended UK release of this song with b/w Thank You For The Music. The original album song is over 5min and back in 70’s, song tracks were considered « too long ». The single version was shortened to over 4mîn. Again, my absolute favourite ABBA song
It is so obvious that you feel and love music Dereck.... I love the way you explained elevation in song...absolutely love your work with this epic song
ABBA was, is a legend band. Gave the lyrics to the women. You do this. Bjorn and ben never wrote down a single note of music. This tune is the balls! Bar Knowing Me, Knowing You.
This song forever reminds me of driving in a car on a mountain pass in Switzerland on a summer's day (probably Col du Santesch in Wallis if I remember correctly). Brings back so many memories! I need to get back there soon!
If you just knew how much weed a have smoked to this song!!! My favorite song when beeing stoned. I can promise you that I truley flied high every single time!
Love when you react to Abba. This song is in my top 10 of Abba songs. The guitar solo is not in the short version. The short one ends just before the guitar solo and the long version has the added chorus at the end. Hi from Gina in Barbados. If you're going to do Eagles, do the live version from 1977 of Hotel California. The elevator scene was in Abba the movie which they used in the Abba parody you reacted to.
Gratulation for your reaction. I think it's the long offical ABBA version of 5:54 with two verses, then after the refrain the instrumental synthi-guitar part, then the refrain again with instrumental end. The radio version has not the instrumental middle part with refrain again. For me this was the first musical masterpiece of ABBA (earlier they had of course pop masterpieces) and blowed my mind (positive perplexity), the same later with the open track The Visitors Both albums have masterpieces, but for me also skipping tracks as Voyage (partly compositional abbreviations, yeah, yeah Benny; but 4 masterpieces, a happy song and ODE for say goodbye to the album era; but why ODE ends so abrupt?). All the best for you!!!
I think you also have reacted to their shorter album version of Gimme Gimme Gimme. I know you have reacted to their live version too. So, you MUST react to the longer studio version of Gimme Gimme Gimme. P/s: What's different between the shorter version of Eagle and this longer version is the bridge..in the shorter version, they cut out this bridge.
