'In the last 5-10 years, sales of their catalogue have diminished...they're not going to earn nearly as much money through streaming as they would have done all those years ago.'
UK artist manager Nick Stewart says earnings from Abba's new release won't be as high as expected.

It has nothing to do with money. They make money anyway, it's about saying thank you to the fans for sticking with them. Hence why the concert tickets are affordable. Mine were just £31.50. 40 years on and the press/media are STILL obsessed with ABBA's money. This man has it the wrong way round. He says they've had to "go on tour" to capitalise on the new music because physical album sales aren't what they were used to in the 1970's. He doesn't understand that the Abbatar show came first and they thought it would be a good idea to write some new music for the show. The album was almost an afterthought. But aren't we lucky for that?!
@josephfilm73
@josephfilm73 2 года назад
Well, there were probably hundreds if not thousands of people who are working on the show. I think they said 250 artists for the digital portion. So that is a lot of high paying salaries to cover. Perhaps why they focused on the money/financial? If the band were motivated by money, they would probably have acted/done things a lot differently. I can tell when someone is just out for the $$$. You don't get the same level of quality. They want to put in as little work as possible.

I doubt they are doing it for the money they are loaded because although it is nearly 40 years since they last released any new songs they will have been raking in royalties from their back catalogue plus Mama Mia films and stage shows are massive around the world. They are all in their 70s so I expect they got more than enough money for the rest of their lives. The one thing I find interesting is they are launching this new show in Britain and not the EU. Didn't remoaners tell us Brexit would kill our music and film industry?.

Björn and Frida are worth 2,5 billion, Benny and Agnetha 2 billion each. They’re loaded with money. Benny said that’s one key factor, never having to care about money. They’re even building the concert hall for the show. ABBA knows exactly what they’re doing and they are street-smart folks who embody the Swedish mentality of hard work and early adaption of new technology. Swedish organisations/companies don’t do things without carefully discussing, reaching consensus and making sure everything’s executed well.

@andrewfish3778
@andrewfish3778 2 года назад
The Beatles were highly protective of their music too - Nike used Revolution in an advert in 1968 and John Lennon immediately shot them down. Where the Beatles suffered is that they didn't own a big chunk of their publishing rights, so whilst they could prevent people using their original recordings, they couldn't stop anyone using a cover version on an advert. Abba's rights were a little scattered at one point, but they managed to gather them all together by the early 90s, which is what made Gold possible.

It's not easy for a music group with the stature of ABBA reentering the music scene in a way that is authentic and not feeling dated. The 1st two songs are very good and sound very comfortable to the ear. The digitization of their tour was exceptionally smart as most of us remember visually ABBA in their peak (not 40 years later). The social media marketing thus far has been spot-on and this will start other groups (young and old) to start rethinking their comebacks. I suspect someone is already looking through Prince's catalog of unpublished music looking to digitalize him in a future event. Brace for impact (good or bad).
@carinalindberg7377
@carinalindberg7377 2 года назад
Considering they have around a billion dollar all together individually and the group almost as much again they wouldn't even be able to attend all their money even if they tried. They aren't doing this for the cash, they are doing it for the love of the music that is ABBA, and as a tribute to their fans. I image Benny's son Ludvig has a finger on the whole idea to begin with as well as during the process considering he's the age and the producer of the concert. Forward-thinking while using memories to move us with them. Truly genius!

Great for ABBA to be back. I've already spent money on buying the limited edition music CD's. I've always liked the physical side of collecting my favourite music and films on physical format be it CD, DVD or Blu Ray. It is sad in my eyes that quite a lot of the physical side of sales and outlets selling such items are disappearing. I find that such items like the formats mentioned means more jobs and more physical interaction. The printers,manufactures of discs, cases etc, wholesalers,distributors and shop outlets mean jobs and interaction. Being at home and just downloading doesn't create many jobs etc. Long may we enjoy ABBA and thanks they have produced such CD'S and Records. Think they understand its not just downloads.

I find these comments from critics so archaic!! It's incredible. Nick Stewart, money is simply not the motive for this comeback. No need. And also, to say precisely to Björn that this may be a wake-up call regarding earnings for songwriters nowadays, compared to the olden days, is simply untrue if you consider that HE, Björn, has been fighting for years to change the way songwriters get paid in the modern ages. He knows perfectly what is happening out there. Please do you homework before coming out as a critic or specialist when commenting on something or someone you don't seem to know that well. Oh and please spare tagging music as music for boys or music for girls. Come on! Don't encourage that.

I dont mean that Abba developed the technique, but I guess the George Lucas company isnt doing this for free... Before this investment pays off the Abba members will be dead. They are going to make silly money from the Voyage hologram show while they sit at home, so I don't suppose they care in the slightest.

ABBA fans have noticed that most of their rare tracks and outtakes have disappeared from RU-vid and Spotify. So I guess every little detail of this comeback is being attended to.

When asked if any other band could do this I presume that the commentators meant living musicians. It's obvious that if all of the Beatles were alive and reunited, there would be no contest. They would obviously sell more songs and albums in every form in the history of popular music. But I believe that everyone realizes that.

My point has nothing to do with how many records were sold. Like it or not, the Beatles, Like the Classical composers, will be heard and studied, alongside Bob Dylan, until Our Lord and Creator, Jesus Christ, returns!! Every other musical artist will be long forgotten. The Beatles didn't just change music, fortunately or unfortunately, they changed the way people look at the entire world. I, though a Beatles music fan, believe that they changed society in a very disturbing and unfortunate way. They messed up our culture!! They made drugs popular and made Our Creator unpopular. God will always win and rule in the end which I believe is much closer than the world thinks. As far as the quality of songwriting and production goes, ABBA isn't even close. They were a fad that's attempting to come back. AND WHY???? For the MONEY! As God's Inerrant Word says "THE LOVE OF MONEY IS THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL" ! I hope that I'm wrong about their intentions but I myself don't believe that they have the talent to make a comeback.Bob

Time to up the meds, Bobby. Why would you be praying for "The End"? What's the obsession with "God" "winning"? Get help.

Hello Jack. God won when He created the universe and everything in it including you, me, ABBA and The Beatles. I don't get obsessed about Our Creator. He will work His Plan through to THE END. I pray that you and everyone who might read this will read the 66 Books of God's Inerrant Word and come to the conclusion that only by Faith in the shedding of blood,and the Resurrection of Our Lord and Creator Jesus Christ will anyone escape the eternal, never ending torment of Hell. I suggest that you start with the Gospel of JOHN. We all need to STOP worshipping entertainers and start WORSHIPPING the God Who gave them the talent to begin with. Bob Mancini

Much of the Beatles work was trite. They set the pace, but were trite. The long-term study of their work did culminate in that understanding.

Morning Sky, I'm arguing over something that can never happen BUT The Beatles have had more hits worldwide, if you include cover versions, than anyone. Who covers ABBA songs? If you look at the whole picture, there will never be a greater group of musicians and song writers as Lennon, McCartney and Harrison and there would never have been an "ABBA" if the Beatles and Bob Dylan hadn't paved the way.

True, many artistes have covered Beatles songs and have had a lot of success with them. There’s something flexible about the Beatles songs. ABBA songs just don’t seem to work when covered by other singers. There’s some magic built into them (mainly, I think, the two voices) and when they’re done by anyone else the magic just dissolves into dust.

The Beatles music is so dated and hardly gets any airplay nowadays. The Beatles had 13 studio , 5 live and 3 collection albums and recorded 213 songs. They were installed on The Ed Sullivan show for weeks in America to break into the states. Abba had 8 studio albums, but only 6 since after they became famous. Recorded 98 songs and sold 70% of what the Beatles sold. The fact that cassettes were invented after the Beatles broke up, and made coping music from twin cassette machines so easy, Abba sales would have been higher again. Albums released on cassette were never truly counted in sales of albums. Every year since 1982 when Abba and The Beatles were split up , Abba have sold more of their music. Abba do not allow their songs to be covered easily, and when they did allow other artists to sing their songs, they all reached Number 1. Westlife, Erasure and Madonna.

People don't cover ABBA songs so much because the vocals and production are a huge part of their appeal. They're unique and their appeal is cross-generational. The Beatles' appeal is fading as their fans die off. Yes, they were important but they were also very much a crucial band for their generation. ABBA's appeal is different, and now that they have new songs and a touring perfomance that could theoretically run for decades they've breathed new life into their legacy.
