A 251type sound is just what I am after (used them in commercial studios but for home sheesh)... realistically trying to see if I can get a Colares. The other option, the ADK Cremona is more in my budget (Ive got ballads on this album that require a little better mic and I am in the market but there is very little market for affordable 251's, especially fet ones, its just those 2). Thanks for this!
I just did some sessions at Abbey Road and Chris Bolster put a large diaphragm Neumann condenser inside the kick drum and it was incredible! (along with a Neumann FET 47 on the outside). It was so good I'm now considering spending $2500 on a kick drum mic, which is insane (I blame that bloody Kiwi, haha!) Sadly, I won't have my own personal Lester to repair if I blow it up. Another great video and exceptional interview, Warren. Cheers!
51:29 Lester Smith basically invented the grandfather of the DTP 640 Rex HAHAHA. Genius. What a man. We're so lucky you've been able to go there and take a whole tour Warren ! Makes the dream feel accessible. Thanks.
This Abbey Road series is so good. And its really an historical document that people will look back on. Your doing it while these people are still around. Paul and Ringo coming on to talk about experiences recording would be the icing on the cake
I had the immense pleasure of meeting and talking with Lester a few years ago when I was at a session in Studio 3. His knowledge and love for the microphones he looks after is amazing and inspiring. I told him I had an old broken mic from the ‘50s and he offered to take a look at it for me. Of course I didn’t have it with me and I’m still kicking myself that I didn’t take it with me that day - because I almost did (I knew he’d be there but thought it would be a little too cheeky to ask - but being the gentleman I then learned Lester is it’s kind of obvious he’d have tried to fix it if he could)
@@Producelikeapro “How did one clean these priceless, delicate microphones?” “Oh, one soaks them in a bucket out the back overnight, sluices them off with a hose pipe afterward, and then gives them a good scrubbing with a wire brush.”
Hardly anyone around me knows how to maintain and repair microphones, so I'm becoming my own part time (and lesser) Lester. Changing a "windy" capsule tomorrow. Wish me a steady hand.
Well that was a neat. Definitely need to watch the Kings Beach it's been on my Lisp list. Let's try that again definitely need to watch the king speech it's been on my list. Although I think it's gonna be a lot more enjoyable now. I love the idea that they actually used era correct microphones.
@@Producelikeapro No pressure, right?? I wish I could bring some of my gear with me. They don't have much guitar stuff, and it's weirdly difficult to rent any guitars in London. Maybe I need to make some friends over there ha ha. My kingdom for a Tele!! :D
Hi@@Wileylikethehawk did you try John Henry's? They've always done an amazing job for me! Last time I checked they had 300 or 400 guitars! www.johnhenrys.com/hire.html
Thanks for your comment! While I understand Sennheiser bought Neumann in 2005 they certainly didn't save them! Neumann are and continue to be the standard by which all other mics are measured against. For instance how many Neumann clones are on the market? Many thanks
