Basically the 4:00 is an hour of local news, the 5:00 is a half hour of local news, then national news at 5:30, then the evening local news at 6:00. Each newscast features updates on earlier stories, plus each newscast has its own special segments 4pm has more entertainment stuff, 5pm features the "Living Green with ABC7" segment, and the 6pm features the "I-Team Investiagtive Report" (Focuses on local corruption and cold-case stories)
Since the late 1920s, all stations east of the Mississippi River start with W, and those west of it start with K, In Wisconsin, all stations start with W, except one small town station which started around 1923 (KFIZ). They're called "Call letters", read about it. The Network Newscasts are shown live in the Eastern Time Zone (6:30) and Central (5:30). In the Central they return to local news a half hour later. It's delayed west of here. There's few programming alternatives for TV stations today.
Because they were "grandfathered" in, being that those stations dated back to the 1920s. I just mentioned that about KFIZ. All those stations you mentioned are among the oldest stations. I think Dallas had a radio station called WFAA that was one of the early ones, that doesn't call itself that anymore but its once-partnered TV station (Channel 8) still does. And KDKA is the nation's second-oldest (or oldest, if you dispute WWJ's claim).
In addition, "W" was the designation for stations East of the Mississippi and "K" for stations West. Before that rule was firmly established, some stations East took "K" calls (like KDKA, Pittsburgh) and others West took "W" calls (like WMT in Cedar Rapids, IA and WHO in Des Moines, IA)
They also need a new set now...I mean honestly, I can NEVER tell what year I'm looking at whenever I see WLS-TV. Set almost looks as if it's from 2004 or 3! The music could honestly stand a change as well.
Well in the United States TV, & radio, call letters are assigned by the Federal Communications Commission. There are corresponding government agencies in other countries that assign call letters in those countries. The "W" and "K" designations for U.S. radio stations go back to the Federal Radio Act of 1934. By international treaty, other countries and areas have their own distinctive designations - "C" in Canada, "X" in Mexico, etc.
I'm in the UK and I love news, but I wouldn't want it at 4pm, 5pm and 6pm. Am I right in thinking that the network news with Diane Sawyer slots into the schedule at 6:30pm? What does ABC in New York do when the state output is broadcast? Does GMA continue for west coast viewers beyond when morning ends in Chicago or is it a taped re-run of the east coast show with news opt outs? Also, what states have ABC 2,3,4,5,and 6? Finally what does the "W" stand for in affiliate station names?
