In 2015, two articles by a blogger named Rachel Brewson on the women's online magazine xoJane went viral. They were about her personal experience as a liberal dating and falling in love with a Republican before their disagreements about Trump tore them apart. She got lots of attention and even appeared on ABC News with her ex-boyfriend to talk about their story.
The only problem was that she didn't actually exist.
Cracks in the story began to show as readers noticed inconsistencies in the blogs, including that the Rachel Brewson on TV didn't look anything like the photo used for Rachel Brewson the author. The character of Brewson had been concocted by the staff of a web money making scheme called Review Weekly that wrote under various fake characters for various real publications. We hear from the marketing consultant who was most central to creating Rachel Brewson, Kenny Hyder, about the scam.
In a series of candid interviews, Fakes, Frauds & Scammers relives some of the most audacious scams and fraudulent stunts of our time from the mouths of the perpetrators themselves. Whether it’s money, fame or simply an addiction to lying, we find out what motivated these tricksters and whether the highs, lows and ramifications were worth it in the end.

The problem is the news corps that regurgitate 100s of op-eds a day and they lack for actual journalism and fact checking in today's age. Sort of, Lewis Spears was quite dishonest in his video "exposing" this, he claimed that the entire thing was made up by him when in reality the vulnerability was real and discovered by independent researchers then Vice ran a accurate story based on that, asking for anyone who had been affected to reach out. The only part that Lewis Spears was involved with was the follow up article based on him posing as a victim of dick based ransomware.

You could have at least asked him what he thought/felt about the consequences of his misinformation. Lile the fake TJ Farhadi bloggers "douchey" and "shitty" pickup takes being taken seriously by men, who then go on to treat women badly in the real world, all just so this guy can make thousands a month off of ad revenue. That's far more interesting than the very unsophisticated scam itself, and if you're going to give this guy a platform to talk about what he did then at the very least you should have challenged the morality of it. EDIT - Also it wasn't even ABC who exposed him, it was just a random commenter, it didn't take investigative journalism to expose him it was just a blatantly obvious trick.

It's easy to influence emotions with lies. It's harder with the truth. It's nearly impossible to make people happy with just the truth. The truth is we traded bloodlines for Bank accounts when it comes to who rules us. All they did was establish the rules for who gets power and who doesn't. The slight political power ordinary people have is meaningless when the real power is wealth. And currently there's no limit on accumulating wealth and the power that comes with it. Laws, specially business and financial laws, are designed to keep people poor and in debt. Capitalism only works if people take home what they actually earn. And if taxes aren't complicated. To fix wages tie minimum wage to profits. Taxes need to be a flat percentage for a wealth tax and a business tax on profits. That would ensure people earn a fair share of for their work. And taxes would be simple, easy, and fair. Yes it would make becoming disgustingly rich hard but not impossible if you earned it.

I am worried how casually people justify the use deception and fraud to make money. We do not fully grasp or teach the ills of social media and the internet and maybe need a law that anonymity on the internet should be civilly and criminally liable as we have seen some cases involving the use of the internet to bully, harass, or defraud have made it to court under existing tort and criminal law.

The only people we've got to blame is ourselves. Even the people commenting on this video are making it more successful. On the internet all that matters is the traffic. You can disparage or love this man and his tactics; all of it serves to make the content more successful. If we really wanted stuff like this to stop propogatung we wouldn't watch, like, or comment but that is very unlikely as everybody always want to leave their two cents.

It's really easy to check if something on the internet is false, often it takes no more than two clicks. It's kind of scary that people just don't seem to care if it's true or not as long as they have some kind of opinion or emotion. What kind of future is that leading to?
