Hello ASL Heroes!!! Hey, I could really use your help. If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you. A small donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com. You can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here right now and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!” www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=64QMBRBXQSV6G Thanks! - Dr. Bill p.s. Want to have your very own USB drive with four semesters worth of ASL instruction for just $79.95? See "SuperUSB" in the ASLUniversity bookstore at: lifeprint.com/bookstore/bookstore.htm Take care and love to you all. :)

I love how you teach this. Silence. Sign the normal way, not slow. This so reminds me of when I took Japanese classes in our local university in which only Japanese was spoken, taught, etc... It was one of the fastest ways of learning a language - complete immersion. As I watch this video, I'm trying to guess your instructions, corrections, etc... We're now on our 3rd week of lockdown. I've decided to try to learn ASL. Thank you.

You are only on your third week of lockdown?!? You lockdown neophyte you! (Ha!) Here in smoky California we've been on "lockdown" (to some extent or another) for months and months! I'd say "lucky you" but somehow it just doesn't fit the situation eh? Regardless, I'm glad you like the instructional videos!

@@sign-language , when our Governor eased off the 1st lockdown, people 'forgot' to maintain wearing masks and social distancing. FaceBook pics showed people in group pics with no masks, etc... Governor re-instated lockdown when confirmed cases shot up drastically and people started dying. For the past 2 weeks, it was like 1 person a day were dying. We live in a small Pacific Island in which you can drive around the island within 90 minutes at 40mph non-stop. So, per capita, our island's stats beats the U.S. stats...Unfortunately, the latest death was a 10 yr old boy... I'm back to rewatch this video which I didn't complete. It's been decades since I've used my brain for 'classroom' learning. Yesterday, my brain felt so sluggish I didn't pass 15 minutes of this video. Time to reconnect those unused synapses! Thanks for the video!

Yes there is. Most now use a tablet hook on top of a holder with wheels that can be placed next to the bed to translate just about any language. Which has come a long way from having to call and wait for the interpreter to come in. I do strongly suggest to all my fellow medical professionals to learn basic signs that would be common for medical professionals to use daily.

So now that Ive lost most of the little hearing I had, it has made me sad i couldnt communicate with my own community. Ive been in classes the last couple years, but this is so much more immersive and helpful than hearing teachers who just dont get it. So thank you so much.

I have found that only doing 10 minutes a day and repeating the same video for anywhere from 3-5 days helps a lot. I started with his lesson 1 video from 2017, and on the first day I did 16 min. of the video then rewatched it cause I was overwhelmed by all the new words (a total of 28 min.) On the second day, I rewatched it until I got to 30 minutes of the video. Today, I finished the first video and only finished 10 minutes of this video. Doing it in smaller chunks with lots of repetition has helped me a lot. After each word he asks us, I sign the alphabet song to remember each letter. To people who are worrying and struggling to learn it all in 40 minutes, don't worry too much about getting it as fast as the people in the video. I forget things easily and panic too because I feel like I can't understand it that fast. Doing 10 minutes a day (especially if you have other classes to memorize info. from) until it comes as quickly as the people in the videos has helped me memorize it better. Do what helps YOU memorize it.

I was watching rikki poynter a while back and found you recommended in one of her videos. I'm only on at the ten minute mark but this is awesome! I'm usually on on my pc from sun up to sun down unless I'm watching my little brother. Being able to actually engage with my body and silence at the same time is really nice and something I haven't able to do properly in years I usually have something with sound going a song, tv show, a video. It's really nice to feel like my body is mine and I'm in control over it like I'm actually present in the world. I did away with my hearing aids after nearly two years of them sitting in their case broken. it had been so long that when we finally got them fixed I couldn't stand the sound of the heat kicking on, the refrigerator running, people going from room to room, talking ect. I couldn't tune any of it out, couldn't deal with it anymore I'd gotten so used to only engaging in conversation and the rest of my family when I was actively trying to. I wanted to learn sign for years and although I know fingerspelling I could never string together the letters to make words so I'm hoping I can get better at this and pick up full signs too thank you so, so much

So here I am finally learning. I started watching another video first, then decided I should start with finger spelling, and I have to say....love the way you teach it. Will you do more finger spelling videos? Even though one is great for learning, its a much better test to not know whats coming next. If I watch it over and over, eventually I know what words you are quizzing, so another video where we don't know, will be the real test.

I watched the part one of the series one time through before this. (I know I should have started here) and then didn't really think about it or remember until the next day. I did it on a whim and when this evening came up I decided to come back and see what I remembered and realized I didn't forget a single sign that was shown in part one of the ASL series. I don't really know anyone who is deaf, nor do I work anywhere that ASL would be needed but the language is incredibly interesting so here's to my new journey. I'll start from the top and see how much I can learn.

I don't know any deaf people but I work in customer service so I want to learn it in case. And I just came back to this video even though it was my first because I am a slooow finger speller so I wanted to see if a refresh would help. And dang, I gotta say, Mr Vicars is an amazing teacher. I like that he's so expressive, and even teaching facial expressions with words, and that he signs to people even if they don't understand, because duh, he's talking. Well teaching, but we do that through talking. Lol I feel dumb for that being a revelation to me but it was. I actually start like hearing a voice in my head when he signs because he is so expressive and I can intuit some of the things he isn't teaching even if I'm not completely sure what the signs are, and I find myself laughing along because he's so expressive. This might be due to me watching him teach someone, but idk either way amazing teacher with a lot of expression and patience. So thank you :) I will recommend your videos to anyone I can.

Hi @Bill Vicars : Thank you so much for the ASL lessons, this is the hardest part for me as a beginner. I’ve learned the alphabet but find it very difficult to interpret the spelling because of the speed in the movement of letters. You are a great teacher that keeps the student engaged in study but I’m having a hard time following you due to the direction you are signing, I’ve noticed you sitting on the opposite side helps out and I was able to see the sign language or letters much clearer after you switched sides. Not trying to be critical, only offering feed back if you haven’t noticed this before or had others bring this to your attention. Safe Travels ! 🙏
@sign-language
@sign-language 3 года назад
Kenneth -- nice of you to reach out. Sure, I'm aware that the angle at which I'm sitting influences the readability of the fingerspelling. I encourage learners of ASL to keep in mind that in actual (real-life) conversations in the Deaf community we Deaf often must read fingerspelling from all sorts of angles (not just perfectly positioned from the front). For example, when a group of us get together we often stand in a circle (so everyone can see everyone). If and when the person to our immediate right or left spells something you we see it at an extreme angle. Is that ideal? Certainly not -- but it is real life and very common. An analogy regarding where and how I sit in the videos is that the angle at which I sit is similar to lifting weights. When body builder wants to build bigger muscles he/she/they pick up a heavier weight. Those who cannot pick up heavier weights can choose to do more reps with a lower weight. Either way builds muscle (some ways are more efficient and build "bigger" muscles that is true but either way builds "some" muscle). Similarly, for ASL students, viewing spelling at an angle is like a muscle building experience. Those who cannot yet comfortably view fingerspelling at an angle may choose to watch the videos at slower speed, pause, advance frame by frame, watch further into the video and get more context, and repeat the word numerous times. The only way a student is going to get skilled at viewing spelling at an angle is by seeing it at an angle. So, yes, I am very well aware that viewing fingerspelling at an angle is not as easy as viewing it head on. I just truly want you to learn to read it at an angle. That way later when you are in a real-life signing situation you will have a better chance of actually understanding what is being signed. If (when) you miss a fingerspelled word in the instructional videos on my channel you can generally still get the gist of the conversation and pick up the vast majority of vocabulary concepts in the lesson. If needed, you can go over to Lifeprint.com and study the lessons there with vocabulary lists and individual links to each vocabulary item. Again, thanks for reaching out. For some fun try this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9tTyRUVQk3A.html Or for even more fun try: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ahnnJrsUXbU.html

@sign-language

Just make a little "pshaw" movement with your hand and either start over or just keep going from where you were. This is a NON issue. Half the time we Deaf can't spell worth dip anyway so what is the point? Instead watch the face and if we are mouthing then read the lips and consider the context and figure out the concept as a whole experience instead of as specific letters on the hand.
