This was pencilled in as the follow-up single to Millionaire in the UK, but when the former failed to chart they opted for the safer Be Near Me. Pity, as I love everything about this track. I am also a little bit in love with Eden. Sigh...
I've been waiting to see this performance again for years - I remember the joy of seeing it live on Channel 4 (UK) as ABC hadn't performed live for sometime. The only live performance of Zillionaire material they did, I believe (they also performed Millionaire in this set on 'The Tube' - where's that?!). What a voice. What a sound. Seriously under rated.
This performance is a little more entertaining knowing that David Yarritu and Fiona Russell-Powell (Eden) are neither mic'd up nor are their instruments plugged in. (You can tell if you look closely.) It's 100% Martin Frye and Mark White. Yarritu and Russell-Powell were hired to... bob around on stage? -- Frye hired them to make the erstwhile duo look more "band-like." On the How to be a Zillionaire track A to Z, the spoken part attributed to Eden: "Hi, I'm Eden. And I want you, to kiss my snatch" always seemed a bit off-putting and degrading... Well, it's not even her. It's Frye's voice, sped up to sound female. Yeesh.
How To Be A ... Zillionaire! is my favorite ABC album. Two of my all-time favorite songs (Tower Of London and 15 Storey Halo) are featured on this album.
Let me take you to Trafalgar Square Let me take you there Every streets a fashion catwalk, everyone's debonair Let me take you to Piccadilly guess it leads somewhere Tower over centuries, tower over London Tower up and frankly I'm amazed What's done cannot be undone, not here not in London What's done can never be erased So, tower up, it's those little things Make life interesting, Tower of London Tower up wasting time Yours and mine, Tower of London Let me take you to St.James's Square Let me groove you there Diplomats get target practice in the open air Psychobillies scream blue murder then they hit Mayfair Tower over centuries, tower over London Tower up and frankly I'm amazed What's done cannot be undone, not here not in London What's done can never be erased So, tower up, it's those little things Make life interesting, Tower of London Tower up wasting time Yours and mine, Tower of London London hey, London, hey So, tower up, it's those little things Make life interesting, Tower of London Tower up wasting time Precious time, Tower of London Tower up I'll meet you there I'll be there Tower of London New York don't make me laugh I've seen photographs Tower of London
Dan Najera Martin was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Disease in early 1986, it was in 1985 when he and ABC were promoting the 'How to be a Zillionaire' album around the world that he began to notice problems with his health, one being constantly tired even after getting plenty of rest.
No entiendo porque en bandsreunited no pusieron a alguno de estos músicos que también fueron parte de la historia de abc, solo el baterista fue el único, hubieran dado buen show cantando be near me
We must be polar! That's the only way to travel............................................................Radiation belts start and then moving beyond the inner and smaller one, we travel through the most lethal zone! So, is it true?
1984! It was the "new"! Still just a bit rather "modern". I give "credit to those how "think ahead and shun a lot of music where its focus seems retrograde! Some music can "use" a past and some just push forward. With this we clearly see a future still so awaiting its end!
Spectacular! Thanks for posting this. I wonder if they recorded a version of this for "...Zillionaire!" with that wicked middle break and the extra lyrics at the end.
When himand backing singers sing-One line Tower of London it is sung in the same way and same chords as-Night you Murdered Love Can't sue them for copyright on that bit as was written by Martin Fry + Mark White anyway lol
i like ABC very much but the How To Be A...Zillionaire! album was bye far the worst thing they ever put out be near me was a fab single but the rest was 100%shit
jamie anderson True! The image they cultivated was out of vogue already in 1984 and this performance is absolutely embarrassing. They peaked with Beauty Stab; one of the greatest albums ever!
