ABC was actually born out of NBC. When NBC was a radio network, there were two NBC stations, NBC Red and NBC Blue. However, the network was taken to court, accused of antitrust issues. As a result, NBC Red remained NBC. However, NBC Blue, as we see with the first logo, became the Blue Network, which later was renamed the American (a variant of NBC's National) Broadcasting Company, ABC. Apparently, for the first few years, it remained closely tied to NBC but began its own programming and such a few years later.

@18:16 my favorite out of the batch... all the great actors that kept working long after the 70s.. Judd Hirsch, Robin Williams, Danny devito, Henry Winkler, Joyce DeWitt, John Ritter, Penny Marshall,Cindy Willams...made millions of people laugh!!!
ABC began when the Federal Communications Commission told NBC in 1942 that they had to sell one of their radio networks. NBC sold the one that no one listened to, the Blue Network, to Edward J. Noble, who founded and owned the company that makes Life Savers candy. ABC TV started in 1948. They were the lowest network in terms of ratings, tech, and other resources for decades until the mid-1970s when they had a lot of hit programs. 1975-1980 belonged to ABC. They may have had popular shows like Dynasty in the 80s, and a famous Friday night line-up during the family hour in the 90s, but they've never been as popular again as they were in the 70s.
@ 40:09 This black and yellow is still a reference for broadcast branding peeps...a reminder that you dont need a bunch a flying 3d crap to make something punchy and memorable. Simple copy that tells viewers easy to get messages.
