Im 45 too. What in the world??? Intesresting thing too, I must have seen the movie 'Christine' as a real little girl. I had these crazy nightmares that went on for YEARS about a car chasing me at night running me over - same nightmare. . I had no idea it was that movie until I was about 20 and I bvb decided to watch it to see if it was any good. And there it was, the exact scene from the movie was my recurring nightmare. I looked up the year it came out --- and ta'da!!!. Since then I've always been careful of what my kids watched as little ones. I know this is a full rant, but facts 🤷🏾‍♀️

I would have been 40 when you guys were posting these comments, 41 now. I had a neighborhood house that had a red light in one of their windows, and whenever we drove past it, all the way up to me being in jr. high, and riding my bike through the neighborhood, I would be spooked by it because of this show. I had little to no memory of it, other than there was a red room. After watching this, the part where the candle floats over to the fireplace was the only thing that jarred my memory, but this show sure had an impact regardless.

Almost 44, I remembered the part with the dog digging up what I understood at the time...was his own skull. Funny thing I had a Tonka CLAW, I got it for Christmas 1984, just bought one off of eBay a few months ago. And yes, this show scared the crap out of me.

If you’ve never read the book, you can always order it from Amazon. That’s what I did(YES, I know it’s a children’s book), BUT, I WAS always very curious as to what it was like, how similar the ABC weekend special would have been to it. Like someone else had said, the book IS far creepier; for one thing the boys’ tour of the house actually takes place on Halloween night (it’s told in first person by Bruce, who is replaced by Todd in the special here), and furthermore he and Bill are not touring the house as part of some club initiation (in the book); simply doing it as an alternative to trick or treating.

Fuzzy Memories is right! I remember seeing this about Halloween decades ago but remembered it differently. It definitely left an impression as a spooky show, though. I seemed to remember an ABC afterschool movie, about 2 trick-or-treaters entering a haunted house. There were some musical sequences, scary stuff, and a scene with a dancing witch. I remember the boys escaping, looking back and seeing something creepy in the window, and running away. Obviously, I was a bit off. It was an ABC weekend special and just 30 minutes, not a movie. No musical numbers, but a lot of eerie music, plus a psychedelic red room sequence with a lot of twirly camera motion. No witch, but definitely an old eerie woman who may have been a ghost. Still, I'm SO GLAD I finally tracked this down. It was on my bucket list of lost-and-found childhood memories. Oh, and such fond memories of the animated show intro. The road once traveled indeed... Other fuzzy memories - you all remember a 70's film about an underground ship and a T-rex on some island? Yup, it was a real film - The Last Dinosaur. Also, remember a 70's film with a ghostly but beautiful girl and a gigantic sea turtle with glowing eyes? That was real too! The Bermuda Depths. Still very atmospheric to watch!

I was about 6 when I first saw this one and it stuck with me. After a few failed searches throughout the years, I finally found it on RU-vid back in 2015. It didn't occur to me that it was one of the ABC Weekend Specials, but it makes sense as it was on around that time of a Saturday Morning. As someone else also said, the beginning brings back nostalgia! It really does. Also, I had always remembered the red room, but prior to my first RU-vid viewing of this, it seems like I never saw the video past the flare at the end. It's very possible that I left the room after getting a little too freaked out, or changed the channel. So it was nice to see the entire video though for once. Over 5 years later and It popped up in my head, so I came here for another re-visit. As an adult, you try to cross-analyze more things than you should. Judging by the style of the mansion and Jamie's (and the other ghosts') attire, I'd say they came out of the 1880''s or 1890's. That would also be about the last time you'd find such a big house in the middle of the city without electricity. That being said, this story was based on present day from a February 1983 standpoint, but the maid claimed the caretaker, who was apparently already old at the time, had been dead for only 40 years. This would put the Bly family as living in the 1930's or 1940's. Also, was the maid supposed to be a ghost too? But a younger ghostly version of her appears in the mansion (and suddenly disappears after putting out the flame). The children would not have been able to see a younger version of her if she were still alive. Also, when she suddenly vanishes at the end and the children figure out who she was, she seemingly disappears shortly after walking off and it spooks the kids. It's a neat tale. I also watched the Haunted Mansion Mystery back in 2015 also as it appeared in the cue. I remembered seeing bits & pieces of it as a kid, but I didn't remember it as clearly as this one. And as someone commented below, it must've been available on here recently, but I can't find it now.
@MrJamieMurph4141969
@MrJamieMurph4141969 Год назад
The book that it was based on(written by Scott Corbett)was written in 1972, but the book itself does take place in fact in the early 20th century. Right after it begins, Bruce says (it’s told in first person from his point of view; Todd took his place in the weekend special version), anyway Bruce says,”Let me give you an idea of how long ago this was. There was no television, and even radio was just getting started..movies were silent..” so yes, it definitely would have been the mid- to late 19th century when Jamie and his family had lived in the house(anyway, the style of clothes and candles and oil lamps instead of electricity are the dead giveaway). And again, Bruce Crowell is the original other boys name(whom Todd Burton replaced in the weekend special adaptation.)
@MrJamieMurph4141969
@MrJamieMurph4141969 Год назад
And yes, it seems the old lady whom Bill and Todd meet is also supposed to be a ghost, but my guess is maybe she and the maid were mother and daughter, or even possibly sisters. The book has a completely different premise: (the boys do not tour the mansion as part of a club initiation); they do it instead of going trick or treating for Halloween, basically.

As noted elsewhere, the exterior is the Frederick Hastings Rindge house located at 2263 S Harvard Blvd. in Los Angeles. Not sure about the interiors. It was also used in "Frightmare" (1983) and the TV adaptation of "The Treasure of Alpheus T. Winterborn" (1980) -- the latter of which certainly could have been an "ABC Weekend Special" but was actually a "CBS Children's Mystery Theatre" presentation. I surmised that ABC got the idea for this and "The Haunted Mansion Mystery" from that series.

Childhood memories! But I only remember it as being called The Red Room; I didn't remember the Riddle after it. All I could remember about the show before watching it here was the image of the boy & his dog laughing in front of the house (I didn't remember them as being in ghostly form, though). I think this episode inspired me to write my own fictional spooky short story back then about my friends and me visiting a haunted house.

Oh man, this sure takes me back too. I was eight also, and never forget the red orb grazing his cheek, and ghost boy says that about thorns in a rose bush. The orb and the fireplace... This, and another show back then, with this freaky stairway into a dark basement, and a skeleton of a girl that died, or was killed, in a dirt pit in the basement, but I can’t remember what it was called, or much about it.

And the skeleton in the basement would have been that of “Old Man Waterman”, a dead old man whose former house the new girl, Angel and her family have just moved into. She and Billy(played by Christian Slater)have been down in the basement to hopefully get answers about the late Old Man Waterman when they suddenly get caved in and in the process discover his skeleton down there.

3:10 is great, as Todd is like “I could have SWORN it was locked!” And just before the end, @ 26:14-he and Bill both like “Come on, let’s SPLIT, and NEVER come back to see this place AGAIN, EVER!!!”

I'd waited 39 years to see the end of this special! My dad and mom made me turn it off (we had to leave to go somewhere) right when the red ghost walked down the stairs. For years, I had this funny memory of him being like a Frankenstein monster (probably the stilted gate and dead-eyed stare). Damn thing gave 5-year-old me nightmares. 🤣

here is an episode-specific episode description from IMDB for The Red Room Riddle: This episode was hosted by the ventriloquist Willie Tyler,& his dummy "Lester".Two young boys, Todd & Bill, go snooping into an alleged haunted house as a club initiation.One of the upstairs rooms was supposedly inhabiting a ghost by the name of Jamie Bly, who was a young boy who burned in the room years before.He had a dog, as well.The entire mansion was filled with ghosts, from Bly, to his old caretaker, to the maid, to everything.This episode featured the misadventures of the two boys as they entered the property & wandered inside the mansion.

The titular Red Room was Jamie's former bedroom which yes, he and his pet Labrador perished in a long time ago(you can tell it was definitely in the 19th century, the way the house reverts to the way it was then-oil lamps and candles instead of electricity, not to mention Jamie's Tom Sawyer-style clothes.) Among the ghosts, don't also forget Jason, the Bly family's former butler(the man who chases Todd and Bill down the stairs, when Bill dons a mask trying to get Jamie back for locking them in the red room). Clever on Jamie's part, the way he just plain "plays games" with Todd and Bill all along,"Maybe I live here, maybe not," "I don't know what you're talking about, I never saw any skeleton," "Where's my family? They're OUT, of course!" thus leaving it up to Todd and Bill to figure out the answer to how strange he his-his old style clothes and using oil lamps and candles and not modern electricity and sure enough in the end, they do get the answer-because he's a GHOST.(it was HIS remains that they found!),just as the old lady tells them right before the end,"Rumor has it he's buried in the yard."

The first 3 airings were hosted by Willie and Lester. Virtually everything that premiered on the show from '79-'84 had the hosting wraparound segs redone by O.G. and celebrity guest from '84 on. (A few specials disappeared by that point and weren't seen again.)

Anyone have or remember the Jasper Kent special?(2 part ABC weekend special from the 80s) I know the actual book title is something like Frank and Fearless, which the special was based on(I did some google research). I remember the first part-Jasper’s widowed dad remarries, his stepmother is a real witch, not to mention her equally hateful son Nicholas, Jaspers father dies and something about he stows away on a train out west(the trains whistle sounded so EERIE to me, as if as a harbinger for Jaspers more impending doom!) he gets off the train and finds a house that appears to be empty so he goes inside, only to hear crying-a child crying-coming from upstairs; a frightened little boy named Harry(I think), “I want my mommy!”(he’s been kidnapped), he tells Jasper, then the girl Lizzie comes in, as does Jasper’s “step uncle”, his stepmoms brother(end of first part), and the second part I don’t recall too well, just that it has a happy ending, as Jasper has come to stay and be a part of this household that includes Lizzie and Harry(I do remember Lizzie coming very close to crying, as Jasper at first was going to decline living there, then it ending with she wiping away her unshed tears.) Anyway, that one would be great to see again; it was kind of a thriller. Haven’t seen it since late May 1987, just before my high school graduation.

I think the title either is Frank and Fearless or The Adventures of Jasper Kent. Incidentally, when I said Jasper’s stepmother was a witch I actually meant a witch as in a hag, a woman perceived as frightful, hateful, and nasty.

An original 16mm print recently fetched over 200 bucks on eBay. Anyone here the winner? Looked way better on 16mm than the terrible 1970s-quality film-to-tape telecine seen here. Although said terrible telecine did make the short seem a lot scarier, what, with its ghost-imaging and all.

I see all the sentimentality and I get it, but no mentions of the book? As a fan of the Scott Corbett book for 45+ years, I couldn't believe I had never seen this, was excited to watch it, and thought it was only "ok." The book is Far more frightening and effective, and I feel (maybe due to the condensed run time) that they eviscerated it. There was no club--just a couple boys' excitement around Halloween, and their curiosity/daring, and just wanting to do something different. I figured they wouldn't show the soldier with his bloody sword (and what was on it) but they changed far too much for my liking. This is a beloved book, with a lot of great atmosphere, and that's missing here. And as I remember, the bone the dog dug up (seen in a flash while running through a creepy overgrown arbor, and That's when Bill gets his scratch) was quite possibly human--Definitely not clearly canine. There are a number of things that they changed arbitrarily, and not for the better, or because they were more cinematic, etc. But I am glad many people got to enjoy some version of the story, at least.

Seems the old lady whom Bill and Todd meet and the maid were maybe mother and daughter; as Todd tells Bill the second time they meet the old lady she looks like an older version of the maid. Plus someone had said on another copy of this that they thought the old lady is supposed to be a ghost as well. So maybe she and the maid really are or were mother and daughter. Sandra Caron did in fact play both parts.

It is just me or does anyone else hear the refrain of "Who's Child is This" when they first walk into the mansion? I thought I had asked this with my post a couple of years back, but I see I forgot to mention it. It certainly adds to the haunting factor and is actually a bit touching.
