Doing Abeka K and it’s working brilliantly, their phonics is so solid. My boy likes the games and activities. In the K program they emphasize initial blends (rather than word families, like fan, can, man) and I’m still just so impressed with how fluent my child is as a result. No painful sounding out words. It’s a traditional classic for a reason.

I really enjoyed using it and basically used it the same as you. I hate I didn’t decide to go with it in 2nd mainly for cost reasons. For the price, I didn’t like how much I skipped in it but now I’m thinking about going back for 3rd.

We love Abeka! Started with K4 and will be going into 1st grade this year so this video was perfect thank you! How did you order the lesson plans to be separated into multiple books? I agree if it’s all in one, it’s so heavy and bulky!

Thanks! I’m trying to decide what to do for 1st grade. Would love to hear why you think this is a better choice for you than TGATB was since it’s more expensive if you don’t mind sharing?

I don’t love the phonics from TGTB. I just don’t find it thorough or repetitive enough.

My friend has way more material as she uses abecca for other subjects!!! The visuals look awesome!!! We use different visuals!!! The curriculum we use puts the words in a stenace!!! Sorry I can’t spell!!! It’s awesome that that it only takes 10 mins!!! I don’t test after my younger kids read the books!!! Marking vowels or sounds probably helps!!! At the end there is a lot of writing for the age!!!

My 5.5 year old daughter is 110 lessons into Abeka K5 phonics and is doing fantastic. I love the way Abeka teaches blends. I think it has helped her start to become more fluent, faster. I also love how the worksheets spiral through review. BUT… getting my daughter to complete the worksheets is such a time suck. She doesn’t complain about them, but she gets so distracted so easily, and I’m constantly having to bring her back to the task at hand. It takes forever. With those factors in mind, would you think something like AAR might be a better fit? FWIW, she does great with the Kindergarten MWC curriculum, including the worksheets. Thank you for your insights.

I have one who gets distracted easily. We are working on that in other settings, but for things like worksheets I sometimes just have him give me answers verbally. Writing takes a lot of energy and concentration at that age. Also, remember that the lessons teach whereas the workbooks just review. You can shorten or adapt to fit your kid's needs.

I agree with @lynetter6850 in that I would get answers verbally and skip anything you deem unnecessary. Abeka is wonderful at reviewing concepts but they also have an overabundance of review. If your child understands the concept then don't be afraid to skip stuff!

I am curious why you switched to Abeka and didn’t do aar / aas? I have a boy and we are currently using.Tgatb 1 but it’s not phonics heavy enough. Can’t decide between aar or Abeka. He is not a worksheet kid but also not dyslexic. Wondered what drew you to Abeka. Also will you be using Abeka level 1 spelling. Thank you so much. Enjoy watching your channel so helpful.
