A glimpse of one of our performances that we did in a very traditional setup in front of all the Varkaris.
Recently Abhanga Repost went to Jejuri for Vaari. This Vaari is basically a pilgrimage that honours Lord Vitthal which starts from Pune and ends in Pandharpur. It involves carrying Paduka of the Saints like Dnyaneshwar and Tukaram respectively in a Palkhi from their respective shrines to Pandharpur. This Palkhi visits from different cities where the Varkaris walk in troupes called Dindi.
Jejuri is one of those cities where we as a Band decided to do our Vaari.
The people who walk the Vaari are known as Varkaris. Lots of Varkaris perform Bhajans and Kirtans throughout this Vaari that are performed to keep the teaching of these Saints alive.
While we were in Jejuri, we were invited by locals to perform at one of their Nivasthan (a place where all the Varkaris stay and do Kirtans). It was mesmerizing to see that our modern contemporary approach towards these Abhangas still influences the same old traditional emotions through all the generations.
