This scene played to perfection by both actors. All Dark Shadows fans know almost all mistakes are ignored and not retaped. Can't find any acting flaws here. Bravo.
The ending of the previous episode with "Abigail... what are you doing here?" was actually filmed and edited way better than it was at the beginning of this episode, much more traumatic and terrifying.
Definitely a top 5 scene in history of Dark Shadows. I personally put it #2 only behind the scene where Joshua finds Barnabas in his coffin. I also enjoyed Trask being walled up by Barnabas right at the top.
All the DS actors and actresses were on their A game while doing the 1795 storyline. The only scenes better than this one was Trask getting walled up and those with Jonathan Frid and Louis Edmonds together after Joshua discovered Barnabas undead.
It really was a great scene for both of them. Very dramatic but not over-the-top. Well, maybe the part where Barnabas shows Abigail he is a vampire could have been a little different if it didn't look like the dentist just told him to open wide and stare at him a bit too long.
Incredible delivery of dialogue from Mr. Frid. Excellent acting from both. Perfect ending for Abigal. It was her that started the whole frenzied witch hunt of Miss Winters. Trask was just the by product of her fanaticism.
No it is not. SHE was MISTAKEN to believe it was Miss Winters, even the countess Natalie Duprea had her suspicions however Abigail was right all along about there being a witch in the house.
Thank you for uploading this. :) I loved this series. I was always impressed by the power of Jonathan Frid's voice. It was such a commanding voice, and no one could portray the character quite as effectively as he could. Mr. Frid was the definitive Barnabas Collins.
I totally agree: Jonathan Frid will always BE Barnabas Collins to me (...and millions of other girls who had a mad crush on him!) He still makes me swoon! ;-)
Louis Tenore • that's right it sure is i was thinking the same thing.i can remember first watching dark shadows in the summer of 1969 when I was 7,years old my aunts and mom and grandmother were watching it and I had been out side playing and came in the house and they were watching it and I watched it with them when my aunt told me it was about vampires and ghosts and I have loved it ever since i,watch reruns on the decades channel here,in east Tennessee, channel 68.10 it comes on at 5:00,am
I love the ending of this priceless scene were Barnabas scares the crap out of his aunt's soul after showing off his creepiest fangs, and she past out like "Oh my god! I'm gonna die!💀" You should see the look on her face and Barnabas's face!😂 It's priceless!🤣🤣🤣
This is the only Collins death that Angelique played no part in. Her curse was that all those who loved Barnabas were destined to die, and it was obvious that he and Abigail had no love for each other. In this case, it was Abigail's own nosiness that proved to be her demise. (If anything, Abigail was useful to Angelique since it was Vicky she accused of being the witch).
It's arguable whether Abigail loved Barnabas or not. She showed concern for him when she began investigating Angelique right around the time they got married.
"I don't understand!" "It has taken THIS to make you say those words. You thought you understood everything. One could always count on... well I can't say "logical"... but an answer at least. I'm afraid the truth is that you didn't know very much about anything."
That's for sure-- especially with religious fanatics. 😈😈😈😈 But Abigail Collins deserved to be "scared to death. A villain with a heart-- attack that is."😈😈😈😈tip o' the hat to the Crypt Keeper.
Clarice Blackburn was such a good actress. And the role of Abigail in the 1795 storyline was the best. A dried-up, bitter old spinster of a woman. A fanatical Christian. With no concept of Christian love or charity.
Her portrayal of Mrs. Johnson the housekeeper in the then present was endearing - what a sweetheart of a gal. Truly shows you Clarice’s talents - her range - as no two characters could be so disparate.to one another.
I believe Barnabas wouldn't kill his own Aunt. He meant to give her the bite of a vampire and turn her into one of the undead. Instead, she got a heart attack.
Being one of the undead technically means you are dead. xD I think he meant to make her one of his blood-slaves to prevent her from talking. She could have been a great help in freeing Vicki from persecution.
Actually, it would have been beautifully ironic. She would become that which she always claimed to despise, a (theoretical) minion of the devil. She might even have suicided by walking out into the sunlight in order to escape this fate... or she might have turned into a more conventional monster and gone after everyone she envied. Yes, envied because she was a spinster in an age when that was not socially desirable.
This scene gets my infinite applause. Never was I happier to see someone’s demise than here with this old crone. Always looking for a witch when the stunningly evil Angelique was right under her very nose
yes it was. Abigail & Trask were both very evil people. since day 1 they accused Vicky as being a witch. this was a great scene. the funny part is why Abigail didn't run. Barnabas called her Abigail, not Auntie. Ha Ha. DARK SHADOWS was very entertaining.
Well, I thought Vickie never did a very good job of defending herself. Then when Joshua turns back into a human being after being a cat, on Vickie's bed !
@@11redlions Yes, that's ultimately what caused AM to leave. Most of the time VICTORIA behaved stupidly. Am said, "I'd go through every dangerous place with no thought. They'd find a severed limb at Dr. Lang's and I'd have to say something like Gee, I wonder what it all means? "
Barnabas was just as good as Sir Christopher Lee. Only Barnabas was a good vampire who loathed what he was. Christopher Lee wanted to be an evil despot.
This is actually why I liked Sir Christophers vampire more, pure vampire, not a speck of compassion. Having said that, in terms of performance and pure terror inspiring presence, Frid is up there in Lee's class when he is being 'evil' Barnabas, and both had killer voices to boot. Both were far better than Lugosi in my opinion.
Brilliant scene from late '67 or early '68 in 1795 at the beginning of the show's creative peak before going back to the present (1968) with Cassandra, Nicholas Blair and so much more. The only thing that ruins it is the reminder ad up in the corner for Tim Burton's God awful 2012 film. No wonder Mr. Frid passed away just a few weeks before it came out. The ONLY good thing TO come from the film is that it was a bomb and deservedly destroyed Burton & Depp's careers, seemingly permanently. In 5 months it'll be 10 years since it came out. No "comebacks" for them.
I remember one take being slightly better than the other concerning Abigail's expression. Could you post the episode right before this one? I believe it's at the end of that one.
Is ABIGAIL penecostal gossiping about everyone at MCDONALDS in the morning? this scene is the best 1795 scene. next to ANGELIQUE luring Josette to WIDOW`S HILL
Abigail...what are you doing here? best line on Dark Shadows. in Horror movies it doesn't take long to see one character you want to see die....... in Dark Shadows there was several and Abigail was at the top of my list wanting to see Barnabas kill...... she was stubborn to the end refuseing to hear the truth.
Do you have the actual scenes of Barnabas shooting Angelique, the following curse & her trying to save him before he died? I once had it on a reel-to-reel tape player , but it was stolen along with the tape!! I’ve tried to find the scenes but had no LUCK.. You seem to have a good bit of them, & also they are of a good quality!! Many Thanks for this trip down memory lane!!!
BRIEF BLOG: 3/23/2024: YES, ABIGAIL WAS BARNABAS'S AUNT IN THE SERIES, SHE WAS JOSHUA'S SISTER & THEREFORE BARNABAS'S AUNT. THIS IS TRULY ONE OF MANY OF THE SCARIEST SCENES IN DARK SHADOWS TV HISTORY AMONG OTHERS. (RIP) JONATHAN FRID & THE LATE CLARICE BLACKBURN WHO DIED OF CANCER MANY YEARS LATER.
Of course the writers couldn't know what was to follow, but when Barnabas showed up at Collinwood in 1966 (or was it 1967?) and Mrs. Johnson answered the door, he should have said, "Abigail . . . what are you doing here?"
BRIEF COMMENT: IF MEMORY SERVES ME AFTER SO MANY YEARS, WASN'T ABIGAIL BARNABAS'S AUNT ON THE SHOW? I AM ALMOST SURE OF THIS AS SHE WAS THE SISTER OF BARNABAS'S FATHER. YES THIS WAS TRULY ONE OF THE TOP TEN SCARIEST SCENES IN DS HISTORY, ALTHOUGH FRANKLY THE SCENE BETWEEN ACTORS ROGER DAVIS & THE LATE JOAN BENNETT TO ME, WAS THE SUPREME SCARIEST SCENE IN ALL OF DARK SHADOWS HISTORY. JUST MY OWN OPINION. FUN TV HISTORY OF A VANISHED TIME.
Steve, If Barnabas had bitten Abigail, then she would have been around for all eternity, yikes! Could you imagine a nosy woman like her meddling into the Collins' affairs and being the Collinsport pulse of their community indefinitely? Barnabas was smart not to bite her. Lol. 🤣I do enjoy the acting in this scene. Dark Shadows the original series will remain my favorite tv gothic soap opera.
