Today I’m going to walk you through 7 things you need to know in order to make a song in Ableton Live as a songwriter. We’re going to be covering how to use stock instruments, placing drum samples, recording VST instruments, recording live instruments like guitar or piano, duplicating tracks to save time, recording vocals, and adding in plugins to start mixing your track.

I have made a bunch of templates, chaining several effects just for the vocals to sound decent, and this guy here, puts a SM57 and starts singing, and the mix is F****** AWESOME.. Well done!

after learning how to work with this program this is a great advancement, very concise thank you bro. However, I have no plugins whatsoever, what are the best ones for singer songwriters

Very helpful! I’ve been working with Ableton for a couple of weeks coming from old-school recording techniques. It’s hard for me to understand loop mentality. I used to fire up a drum machine and actually build the track, layer by layer, all the way through, then record drums and vocals last . It’s gonna take me some time to learn but I’m enjoying the process!

There's all kinds of ways you can approach it. Just sharing what has worked for me so far.

I loved this! Could you make a video where you create the pre-chorus/chorus to this song as well? I'm having a hard time with finishing songs and connecting different sections, cause I don't know what to do after making the verse

Hi Den -- Follow up on Coolness's comment. I've been watching your videos off n on since I first started trying to learn FL almost 2 years ago.... AND I guess I always thought of you as an FL guy. Now I see this Ableton video of yours & it's got me wondering -- do you find it easier to lay down songs tracks on Ableton than on FL? I'm trying to decide if I'll be better off to jump ship on FL and climb aboard Ableton. Or are there good reasons to use both??? Appreciate your feedback.

Hey Wayne. I think everyone has to figure out what program's workflow works the best for them. I personally love working in FL Studio. I'm learning Ableton because I want to use it for a more live performance context. If you'd be up for it, I'd love to jump on a zoom session with you to talk through what you have been working on and where you're running into problems. If you are up for it, send me a DM on twitter @_thejeremyj Thanks!

this is good. I am an old musician not that into loop structure as much as arrangement view builds. I was wondering why you left the click volume on so high in the mix? And not take it off at the conclusion of the tune? Aslo....How do you make a soft kick drum for the click? not the default click sound?
@ProductionDen
@ProductionDen 4 месяца назад
As I'm recording and getting everything worked out I keep the click it. It's not usually until the end when I'm ready to mix down and master that I take the click out.

Thanks for taking the time and effort to make this very helpful video The only thing though Is It could have done without the constant backing track , it makes it very hard to concentrate and hear clearly what your actually doing on Ableton , Its very distracting

Hey thanks so much for makng the effort to reply, Its no big deal, the video is great and I really appreciatte you giving your time like this, thank you ! It was just a bit distracting for me making It a harder to hear clearly what you were actually creating So many DAW introductions focus on Electronic musc production and bedroom programmers rather than actual physical musicians and singer songwriters who just want to get a basic song demo down with maybe a couple of live guitar and vocal tracks then some percussion , bass, piano, a string sound etc Just a simple stripped back sound maybe a dozen tracks max and don't need 30 tracks of samples and ambient sounds 😜 So I am definitely going to be subscribing Thanks!

Hi Den,Your video is awesome,I am a song writer beginner,I don’t have much time to make music,Is that ok to create music with other people’s beat?Does songwriters have to know music production?
@ProductionDen

I think you just start where you are at and you have decide what you want to do. I personally think learning how to produce music is a great skill for singer songwriters. If you don’t learn then you just have to be willing and able to pay others for their skill in putting together music for you.

I can´t believe it - meanwhile, we are at the point where there needs to be background music while I listen to a music example from a tutorial. The next step will surely be that when a symphony orchestra is playing there will be some background music behind that orchestra. Wtf is wrong with this world . . . You talk and you play your tutorial arrangement and then you make it extra hard to understand by noodling background noise . . .

All electronic in software instruments? No recording advice or set up what so ever? This video was pretty lacking in any real information.

I assume everyone has the gear, and walked through the basic process I use to make a song. Let me know specifically what you would like to see, and I can do a more in depth video on that.
