This is the first of a 4 part video series of tutorials about Ableton's amazing Operator Instrument. In this video I explain how the instrument is laid out so you can quickly find the different sound design sections on the synth and generally know your way around it. Operator is a super capable canvas for sound design and i am very excited to dive in deep with you over the next 4 videos. Check the comments for time markers.

I have been an Ableton user for over 10 years, and I always dismissed their stock plugins. Now I think I need to revisit them, and these tutorials are really helping me get some ideas for some interesting sounds. Can't wait to get through all these videos.

No no no, I love YOU. Right back atcha' homie. I've been dreading spending unneccessary money on Serum/Massive in this pandemic, am learning Ableton from scratch. Trying to get a bassline/synth sounding like Dusky and Carbon Based Lifeforms. Finding this series gives me hope I'll get there just with operator.
@Lukile_music

really looking forward to the next few videos. Operator is the only synth I use cos I wanted to first git gud at the plug-ins that came with the program before buying more VSTs and now I can't even transition to Serum or other synths cos there's always more waiting for me to unlock every time I open it up. v addictive and exciting synth - like I thought I'd get bored of it at this point but everyday I keep discovering more. Hopefully in future videos you'll go hella deep into what it can do and I can learn about things that I haven't yet stumbled upon on my own

Wow! I had no idea that operator is so powerful. I am that guy that you describe in the beginning of the video. I opened it and just said well ok I guess... and moved along. Now I am going to dig deeper. Thank you for posting amazing content all the time. I spent 2 hours using your live ambient looping set yesterday.

btw. the fine tune only raises the pitch an octave when the coarse ratio is 1. if you want an operator at a 0.5 ratio to be a detuned supersaw, and you tune it near 1000, it's going to be a supersaw doing a powerchord.

I'm a Logic user, so I already had the suspicion that Live's stock plugings must have a lot to offer, once we know them a bit better. So when I started exploring Live, I already expected that Operator must be better than that 4 bit Sine wave thing. And yes, this video gave me instant gratification. "I knew it!". Will go right to your next part to learn more about this awesome, but somewhat inferior to Alchemy (just a Logic fan's compulsory Ableton Bashing) synth.

You said Operator can create any synth type sound you can imagine. I'm an old school Gary Numan fan who loves the Polymoog Vox Humana sound he created on the 1979 album The Pleasure Principle. He put the direct out from a Polymoog through a phaser and created something incredible. Listen to the song Cars. Can you recreate that sound through Operator/Ableton?

@JamesRamboPearce
@JamesRamboPearce 4 года назад
@@rhithym Alright let me rephrase, so you can understand and not take me the wrong way. My point is that there is so much already in Ableton suite, that I don't feel the need to buy more (instruments is a bit of a stretch) extra sounds or third party plugins that maybe prettier to look at and easier to use. Ableton has most cases covered for me it's just a question of learning it properly (much like the points made in this video).
@YNGDYE
@YNGDYE 4 года назад
James Rambo Pearce yup. Not much sense in investing money into other vsts if you can’t already get the maximum out of what you already have. Once I get Operator down, I’ll have a blast with the real instrument/programs

I’m sure he means well but this is a terrible explanation of FM synthesis. Why not just start with the basics? He only starts talking about FM 5 minutes in. I’m not sure he himself knows what he’s talking about.

At 3:24 you seem to be confused about what the oscillator settings do. You're not drawing a waveform, you're setting the amplitude of different frequencies. A simple sine wave means a single bar has non-zero amplitude and the others have zero. A saw wave would mean that all frequencies are at maximum.
