The much anticipated Ableton Push 3 is here and it represents a quantum leap in features vs the previous versions. Push 3 can run Ableton Live without being connected to a computer in standalone mode. This allows you to create and capture ideas wherever you go with the push and when youre ready to flesh the idea out, you can connect Push 3 back to the computer for arrangement and automation. The Push 3 also has recieved an incredible upgrade to its playable pads. They now output 3 MPE parameters, slide, per note pitch bend, and polyphonic aftertouch. This addition makes playing the Push 3 much like playing a real instrument. Also the Push is now a full featured audio interface with 1/4" ins and outs, Adat, midi, pedal and cv, and it can even host a midi keyboard via its usb host port. In this video we look at all the new features as well as my personal thoughts about this rad controller for Ableton Live.

Hey man! So, I know this isn't the most relevant topic to this particular video, but seeing how you're a master at sound design, I would LOVE to see your techniques and insights on getting a bit more sophisticated and advanced with envelopes or LFOs. By that I mean going beyond the basic ADSR shape and programming envelopes in such a way that their timing and levels interact to create more complex patterns and modulations. This topic combined with your teaching style would make a sick video!

Very helpful! Really good point about heat issues! I perform live in FL and during the summer temps are easily above 100 degrees. I don't think the Push 3 would last very long without a fan on it especially in the sun. 😮 This could be an business opportunity to create a sun shade/case for it with a fan cooling. Hey! Can't wait to get that one, it seems to solve a problem I had with setting up my (small) live idea. Could you make a video about using it in conjonction with your guitar and maybe the guitar go through a guitar processor? I have a Helix and I need to basically use a complex looper+track-player and I think Helix + Pus 3 should work very well, but I'm having doubt because so far no videos I saw talks about the limitations in this setup. I'm guessing the first limitation is that the standlone cannot (of course) use VSTs? (because that requires having VST files specifically built for that hardware/OS, which I'm guessing is neither windows or OSX hahaha). I'm fine with that, but I'm guessing there might be other limitations. One I would like to know is if it's still ok to use Push 3 as a mega looper, doing live looping normally or without hands (using the technique where a midi track drives the changes in recording and playback) etc. It woudl be great if you consider showing this kind of usage and point to the lmiitations. Anyway thanks for your videos, I'm learning a ton!

Oh dear, they didn’t listen! Yes it competes with ni mashine+ and akai force with standalone mode. (Now a cash cow to sell more ableton max live plugin instruments). But the biggest visible problem off the bat is they did not include dedicated channel strip rec arm , solo, mute buttons. Yet again it seems you have to hold down the top channel select button for 1.5seconds this is simply not good enough when live looping and switching to next track to arm Within a millisecond time frame. Maybe they have done something with the jog wheel instead. And have they sorted out the pedal inputs to stop session mode clip loops that are in focus?

Yeah, it's really rather ridiculous how unstable Live is. Don't get me wrong, I like a lot about live, but there are so many stability issues, and so many small, easy quality of life fixes that could be coded in a few days, but live just doesn't have them. I build my own external app that enables me to do a lot of the MIDI piano roll stuff I wish ableton had(add/edit rhythm patterns quickly, automatically transpose to a given key, save a checkpoint in the midi data so you can screw around and still come back without having to copy the clip a ton of times, etc.) But the worst part was creating the midi control surface script. Ableton literally just runs whatever code you put there on the main thread. Code calls itself in a loop? Great ableton is now completely frozen and you have to kill it. I mean it's literally probably first chapter of a software stability 101 book that you don't want to run 3rd party code in a way that can crash the main app. I know, it's audio so latency is super critical, but midi surface scripts are written in Python, and there's still a 100ms tick time with abletonosc, so we're not exactly talking real-time here, so we might as well get stability too.
@vroteg
@vroteg Год назад
@@peterr6205 I don’t use any of m4l devices from side libraries cause I have notice too many issues with m4l devices may crash Ableton. But unfortunately it is expected cause m4l and Ableton thought now one company are not the same. Different coders. And this is exactly what happens when 3rd party program get access to engine. Sometime i want to beat into people heads this simple truth. Many people want to have ARA support but don’t realise how buggy and unstable it can make original program. I pray it will never happen. Without m4l Ableton quiet stable though. At least much more stable than Bitwig which used to be very stable but because developers don’t use it themselves and don’t test it properly now thrives with bugs.

My first thoughts about the heat management are the same. I just really don't think this is an item I would take on the road period. There's just too many things that could happen. wow; a dawless crash. apart for actual stage use having a standalone version is really a first world problem. the push 2 is already a "computerless" experience; as is the push 3 without computer guts. I get it in a way but it goes to show how the whole "dawless discourse" was always circular logic. you're just using a different machine; with a tinyer screen. the push is actually a nice example of how to work on software while having an immediate; tailor-made; hands-on experience. If you want to get "away" from the computer get a usb extension cable.

Don't forget you need Ableton Suite to really use this so it'll set you back about 1500$ Edit: and that's just the standard version, let alone the standalone that'll set you back 2.5k. In my opinion? F that.

So its an MPE controller. Looking at other MPE controllers like the Roli Seaboard Rise at 1300 and the Osmose Expressive E at 1800, the push without standalone mode is only 1k. AND it has an audio interface built in. Is it worth double for standalone? idk thats less black and white for me.

@Seed to Stage yea im inclined too agree with what you said there actually and the new pads look great and can be upgraded in future so makes sense

@@jsadecki1 I mean a 'studio' version.. ie. just the controller aspect without standalone and the audio interface. Which 99.9% of us already have.

Just to reiterate -Ableton Note was the app that they gave us to start a project away from the DAW....I appreciate they feel the need to compete after they parted ways with Akai who made the Push 1 for them and then left to go do the Akai Force... but.... erm...well.... Let's see how things are in 6 months' time.....I appreciate the Roli style MPE capabilities but... well only time will tell. I look forward to the onslaught of RU-vidr content explaining why we so badly need this in our setup...I am gueasingthe target market is the DAWless crowd who don't like the laptop + controller combo... Just As Maschine controller + PC migrated to the standalone, let's hope this catches on...

Arrangement view is not an option in stand alone. That is a hard no from me. It is basically not Ableton live as stand alone. Also it cannot host VSTs. And if you want to go with the controller starting PUSH 3 the upgrade is all in or not at all. The upgrade should be offered as separate parts: Operating system, battery and the SSD should be able to be purchased from any brand you like. I can tell you from experience, SSD cards do go on sale. All of this together tells me to just stay with my PUSH 2. I do not need my PUSH to be stand alone. PUSH 3 is too expensive and incomplete Ableton Live and caters to taking the money of the music hobbies it is not a device for a music professional. They are working hard to make it look good.

So can you use the standalone version in both standalone and controller mode like the push 2, and does the controller mode have all the new features like mpe, audio interface etc…? Or do you need standalone for this? Trying to. Decide whether to get one but im not to hyped about standalone, just the controller version but want to make sure controller version comes with all the same features thanks. Lastly how do the pres in the push audio interface sound? Comparable to high end sound cards or subpar like maschines? Thanks
@PoboyMusic
@PoboyMusic 11 месяцев назад
The pres are pretty weak. Fine for guitar I guess but not for a dynamic mic like the SM57.
@joeymc5272
@joeymc5272 11 месяцев назад
Thanks, that’s what I figured. I’d be willing to pay a bit more to get good quality conversion but then again, I already have a higher end audio interface, so maybe it makes sense just to have a simple one in order for people to use it on the go would not be able to use it for any serious recording, though in my opinion
@PoboyMusic
@PoboyMusic 11 месяцев назад
@joeymc5272 yeah I tried setting up a mic to record my piano and it bairley registers even on high. Hopefully they allow external interfaces like akai has done. Still kinda defeats the purpose of standalone tho.

@joeymc5272 11 месяцев назад
@@PoboyMusic yup exactly why im waiting on music gear nowadays until kinks are figured out. If you put a cloud lifter or some type of preamp you should be able to boost the mic a bit. But that means more gear which means not really doing the dawless situation. Im not getting the portable version because they have years yet before technology get to the point of a full daw in a box. I bet another decade
