Abnormal Transformer Load (ALE Swansea to Hirwaun Industrial Estate, Rhigos)

One of two 125 ton (net weight) transformers being delivered to a brand new substation being built to connect Pen y Cymoedd Wind Farm to the National Grid. Its twin was delivered the week before.
Each transformer was lowered onto a turntable and the girder frame trailer dismantled from around it, before being spun 90 degrees and pushed into position on rollers.
Many thanks to the guys from ABB, ALE and Shield Security for not telling the guy with the video cameras to bugger off :)

Ah memories I worked at Hawker Siddeley as a crane driver from 1983 to 2003 had to use two cranes with a beam to load those buggers.

Doh! I was expecting to see the effects of the electrical type of Abnormal Transformer Load. Never mind. It certainly takes a big transformer to turn all those wind turbines, to make them look as if they are doing something useful.

Lol, all the dolly tires (or tyres) are warm, brakes, you think? Also interesting, I would have thought the truck's radiator and engine compartment would stand out more, but I guess the whole underside of the truck gets heated up from the airflow (the air going through the radiator and over the engine and other components).

OOH According to my Sources the Tractor is a 20L Faun Koloss built in 1992... I wouldn't want to be filling that up!

3 drivers on this whole thing. Any idea if the trucks are electric? It might be really low reduction gears but for a few moments it did sound like really stressed electric motors.

aserta That truck's one of their old ones. ElectronSpark for an old road , this is pretty wide and easy to drive on! imagine something half as wide with cars parked down both sides blocking the junctions; describes driving in the uk!

What truck was in the front? I'm not from the UK. Looks like an old, modified mercedes? But I don't recognize the upside down horseshoe on the radiator grille. That thing pulls like a Mack, LOL.

josso1 Yep, got to give the thermal cam some exercise every once in a while :) My original camcorder (a Panasonic NV-GS400) has an external AV input, so I can use that to record the video output from the FLIR E25 :)

Jammit Timmaj It's still got the insulator bushings to bolt on top, at 2:22 you can see the caps on the roof and side "tanks" to take them. There'll be an oil tank, radiators and cooling fans to bolt onto this thing on-site.

DJSkunkieButt at a few of the roundabouts you could spot which ones knew the roads or had satnav, because they'd all stream off and try to get ahead. Luckily for me practically the entire route has old roads regularly linked up, so I could let the convoy pass and still get ahead of them.

I was thinking the same thing myself. I hope that their route was well-publicized ahead of time and that it didn't travel on any one highway for very long. The load is too wide for them to pull over and let traffic get by.
