Abortion in Ireland was produced in 2012 by the Irish Family Planning Association (IFPA) prior to the legalisation of this essential part of reproductive healthcare .
The IFPA produced this animation because we wanted to change the way people spoke and thought about abortion in Ireland-we wanted discussions on abortion to be informed by facts. We believed that for too long abortion had been left in the shadows and the women who need abortion care stigmatised.
The animation was a critical contribution to changing opinions, informing discussions and breaking the stigma, at a time before the mass civil society mobilisation around the issue and when a referendum to change the law was still a distant possibility.
We knew change was possible if people could start the conversation. Six years later, in May 2018, 1,429,981 people voted to change the law and allow access to abortion care in Ireland.
The IFPA is now a committed, rights based provider of early abortion care at our two Dublin clinics.
