This is a short background video to a recent recording I made of this famous tune - something about the tune (when and why it was written), how it became famous and how it works - key and time signatures and structure. Then there is a bit about preparing to play it and some of the issues the player has to think about. As in my recording of the tune, the violin used is by James Findlay of the small village of Padanarum in Forfarshire, Scotland. It was made in 1880. James Findlay was in fact a handloom weaver who took up violin making very successfully. He made over 500 violins and trained other makers.

Thank you very much for this little jewel of a clip. I get so impressed by people like you who take their time to spread their experience, expertise and insight in music; all of which you have both practically and theoretical. I stumbled over this piece watching the popular TV series Yellowstone. In the first episode the tune comes as a soundtrack to a very emotional funeral. It hit me right in the guts, and being a musician (recorder), I had to look it up. Information like this is rare to find nowadays when most of the WWW is commercialized. I think I have watched it ten times, finding new details every time. And, to contradict only one of your sayings: I would very much have liked you to go through all of the piece. Thank you again. The song is added to my repertoire.

I just learned today about this song's origin. The lyrics are bittersweet and I cried until I had a headache. Beautiful piece. Needs a warning label.

It was very fortunate that Ken Burns discovered Mr. Ungar's magnificent song. It really fits perfectly into the magnificent "The Civil War" documentary.

It is quite a song and proved excellent background for the Civil War documentary on our most horrible war because it could be in turns sorrowful or joyous. It’s a fine tune for the intermediate violin student.

I quite agree with the 'sorrowful or joyous' comment. The sheet music is headed 'plaintively' and of course it works well as such, but I think if you keep the tune moving it can sound quite reassuring, comforting and, yes, joyous.🎻

I quite liked this little video. I'll be playing this soon as the wedding processional for a niece at the Ashokan Center where it was written. I'll be playing a mandolin with my wife playing guitar behind. As you said, this piece can be played at different tempos, making it haunting, particularly on the violin or more up-tempo making it quite joyful and hopeful. It is my favorite tune to play on the mandolin -- we'll also be playing Midnight on the Water, Simple Gifts, and a rousing version of Scotland the Brave to conclude the ceremony, other favorites -- and like you, I will start with no ornamentation. Then I will add just a bit of flutter picked vibrato as it repeats. Some mandolin versions go way overboard on that to my ear. After watching your video, I may add a slide or two. At any rate, your video was like nothing I've seen on RU-vid before and was quite refreshing.

Thank you, Kathleen, for your kind comments. The violin is a Scottish one by James Findlay of Padanarum, who was a good maker - it dates from 1880. I bought it on Ebay. Now, buying an instrument unseen is a very risky business. However, I have been looking at violins, trying them out and buying - and selling - them for nearly 30 years. I am not a dealer ; I love playing the violin and am fascinated by their different 'voices'. Currently I think I have about 10, of which, excellent as this one is, it is not the best. I enjoy playing them all, and I have made RU-vid videos with many different instruments. In all these years I think I have built up some expertise in judging violins, and in the past two years I have bought several from Ebay after very careful study of the photos and the description. They have all been offered as 'Sale or Return' ; I would never risk buying a violin, however good it looked, which I could not send back if I was unhappy with the sound. All I can suggest, if you are looking for a new instrument, is, try out as many as you can. If you are lucky enough to live near a good violin shop, go there and try them, Dealers nearly always will allow you to take a violin away on trial. Unless, of course, you are lucky and find a violin straight away with which you fall in love, I would do that as often as possible - the dealers know that buying a violin is a personal choice and they won't mind you tasking your time, over months if need be. 'You get what you pay for' - well, up to a point. One of the Ebay violins I bought cost £50 and, though it looks quite amateurish in its build, it plays very well - much better than some I have tried in shops at four figure sums. You can see and hear it on more than one of my Ebay videos - it's by Sandy Robertson of Garmouth and is a deep red colour. I was lucky there. So if it's dear, that is not the important thing ; it's the sound that counts, and I think you'll be able to judge that for yourself. But TAKE YOUR TIME! You will build up a good sense of what is better and what is less good by trial and error. I'll end this reply now, but I'll have a look in RU-vid and find a Sandy Robertson video just so you can see what I mean. I'll identify it in another reply in a few minutes. 🎻 Good luck! Alastair

@@leitfie3579 sincere thanks to you for all this information, I suppose the great sound comes from the players hands, I haven't reached near that, but I love the music, the Scottish music is beautiful,I listen to Phil Cunningham, /Ally Bane. Great music here also, I live in Ireland. Thanking you for your time, keep playing the beautiful music on your beautiful violin.

To my ear, this song sounds better with a slow, spare, and shallow vibrato. I have heard violinists play it with heavy vibrato and it just doesn't work.

The first time I heard this tune was played by Amy Read on this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HEP5cuZJVdo.htmlsi=KwhBgmYdm2_2ALJR As you say; it is a tune you can make your own and I felt she did exactly that. Thanks for the history lesson I thought it was old.

Yes, the slower tempo is better. Even so the attack has to be smooth, each note gracefully merging into the next, no sharp attacks. Then there are dynamics and note extensions. This is where the piece really presents itself. This is where the written music leaves too much out of its description. Your playing here was quite nice, but still it does not display the expressiveness of Jay Unger's rendition.
