About Our Permaculture Geese: Overview of Goose Care and Contributions / Sustainable Farm

Axe & Root Homestead®️, Permaculture Made Simple

Let’s go beyond fundamentals of goose keeping and I’ll share how I use these amazing animals on my homestead. While many farms use geese for meat and eggs, their role here is more about stacking functions and taking part in the farm ecosystem.
I’m sharing:
- Basics: quantity, feed, water, housing, breeding aggression
- Permaculture uses: Breed conservation, fertilization, weed and lawn grazing, pasture rotation participation, flock guardians, vineyard and orchard maintenance
And FREE download called “Which Breed of Goose is Right for My Farm?” at AxeAndRootHomestead.com. You can also find my articles on geese at Backyard Poultry Magazine.

We also have a small river crossing our land here in Scotland, and we are thinking to have some ducks and geese. Should we create some sort of boundary at the river to limit how far the birds can go? Do you have one?

Hi! Thanks for commenting! Ideally you wouldn’t want a barrier because it could obstruct the flow of water and cause pooling, flooding, etc. Surprisingly, we don’t have a barrier and the ducks and geese are good about coming home in the evening after free ranging. They know where their food is. 😉

@@AxeAndRootHomestead Yes, we are aware of it. There is a possibility to do it without to obstruct the river though. But thanks for your answer - there are very few information about this issue. Your video was very interesting and informative 👍

Ok serious question. I ordered a gander gosling with my ducklings, just one no female goslings is that going to be an issue?
@AxeAndRootHomestead

Hi! Most of the time, yes. They really do need a mate of their one kind otherwise they’ll naturally try to pair up with a smaller bird. That can cause some serious injury.
