Wonderful content as usual. It's very similar to bonsai soil which I've been experimenting with over recent weeks and I'm excited to see how it turns out. How would you address the issue of plants needing feeding? In bonsai the plants are artificially fed and in my terrariums, I like to use vermicast as it's a natural, organic fertiliser. Of course, moss doesn't need feeding but I've noticed some terrarium plants, over time, can show signs of nutrient deficiency.

Liquid fertilizer is given when growing plants other than moss. Be aware that if you give too much fertilizer, algae will grow.

What are the measurements that you usually use? You mentioned in your book. 80% akadama, with 10% lava sand and 10% rice husk.

Is the akadama supposed to crumble or be powdery? how long does it last? 赤玉は崩れるのか、粉っぽいのか？どのくらい続きますか？ I imagine even the best quality akadama requires sifting and cleaning to prevent powder? 最高品質の赤玉でも、ふるいにかけ、粉を防ぐために洗浄する必要があると思いますか?

The hard type Akadama soil does not collapse even if it gets wet. No need to remove powder.

Hm....Then here in the US that means.....we maybe use....fired clay cat litter, finely crushed lavastone, and fine charcoal? Time to give it a shot!

Yes, if the cat litter is natural- without chemical ingrediaents- why not? I heard it's sometimes used for Bonsai substrates too but I never tried it. Please tell how it worked👍

This is probably the best mix coming from the land that adors moss its basically fully Japanese so its both expensive in the uk and maybe with lots of miles journey perhaps not the greenest way of producing a nice mix here not there I wonder if we in the uk have our version of the mix and what it might be if it could reach perhaps 85%as good id be happy

Here is what I am thinking of using: Fluval stratum substrate to substitute for adakama, granular activated charcoal for rice husks, and crushed lava rock or worst case vermiculite. The fluval should be low nutrient and slightly acidic, the rice husks are charcoal, so that should work, and then lava rock or vermiculite should cover the porous component. I'm going to make a trip to the local aquarium shop, I suspect I can find all of that there.

I will use zeolite from the bbq section as a substitute for Fuji sand, and horticultural charcoal instead of the rice husks

It is possible to grow only Akadama soil. It will last longer if you add charcoal.

Is the soil mix also suitable for tropical closed terrariums? The humidity is at least 80% here in Singapore. Can black lava rock chips be used in place of the Fuji sand?

Hello again great video. I looked for the items i found the smoked rich hulls. What size Akadama do you use 'shohin'? Lastly i can't seem to find fuji sand Maybe you can help with a link on where to buy that ships to US or maybe you can recommend a substitute for the fuji sand.
