This is so beautiful. I had a bossy Jacky for 18 yrs. I adored him and when he left me I was totally shattered. They are such a wonderful breed with so much character. They have NO fear.
I had to put my 11yr old jack russel Ronja to sleep in march this year after a couple of years of cancer and operations and damn how much i miss her. Would probably not call JRT the best dogs but they are very easy to love and probably is my favorite breed.
Facing having to do the same with my 80 yr old Mum's 16 year old long haired JR, my crazy, violent dear friend Molly. Not something I know how to handle, despite having had to do this twice before. So , I understand ... it's the most painful kindness and an awful X to bare ...
My JR Ben was 15 when he died we had him from 8 weeks old. He was our life. He died 18 years ago and I still miss his character.. Smart, Lovng with the Heart of a Lion. Brilliant wee dogs.
I love my Jack Russell more then the world itself. He was thrown away at 12 weeks old and I picked him up and fell in love with him. After a $590 vet bill, i kept him.
I have a JR/ Beagle. Buddy is a great dog. I adopted him last March. He's a digger though. He might be able to sense there's a mole in my yard. He likes to catch rodents. He's got 3 mice that I'm aware of. I'm glad he doesn't eat them,he just parades them around shaking them and flipping them around until I toss them in the trash. He likes to run and run. His favorite game is chase. He likes the other dog to chase him. I take him everywhere,he's good in the car. He likes to go in my boat fishing with me.

My little Jack Russell seemed like an Angel from Heaven. I'd lost my Maltese X Eddie after 17 years together, he was so sick that I had to let him go. Then when I was ready for another canine friend in comes Angel a badly abused female Jack Russell . I still miss Eddie but she has taken the pain away but what a screwy dog ! She climbs trees and is so fast that she can catch birds too but so obedient that she.drops the bird when told to. No more stray cats peeing in our garden, the same with our friendly local Possum who she trees every night but backs off when I say so. Yep she's one nutty dawg.
My wife and I were VERY fortunate to have visited a rescue center near us. We were looking to adopt, and low and behold someone had abandoned a female Jack Russell on that day. We were ecstatic! I love this breed, and Sam is the best thing that ever happened to us. Love my little girl.
Pets really do pick their masters. Loyal and has been great for my health and to help her get the excercise she needs from all the snacks she TRICKS ME INTO GIVING HER I took up jogging with her and what a perfect fit !!! They make awesome running partners
I am a total lover of all dogs, big and small. I currently have a JR, these days, that is almost 7 and a half years old. I got him just a couple of days before he turned 12 months old. And saved him from being sent to a dog shelter. I would be totally lost without him now and consider him to be my best friend in the world. We are literally inseparable. Whenever I do have to go out to do a spot of food shopping or whatever. My loyal and beloved Jack sits or lays on top of my couch, beside the window in the lounge/living room. And he just stays there, looking out the window, waiting patiently for me to return. And whenever I am out visiting friends &/or family, and I am gone for more than an hour or more, I always find myself thinking about my dog at home and I miss not being at home with him. Every day I spend time playing with him. Throwing one of his soft toys or a ball. And he brings them back to me. Occasionally I trick him and throw it in the opposite direction, to mentally stimulate him, as he gets bored easy if I'm just throwing it in the same direction over and over. Or I throw up one of his toys so he can catch it in his mouth. He's happy to play multiple times a day for up to an hour each time. JR's truly are a bundle of joy and energy. And I wouldn't have my Jack any other way 💙😁🐶
Well you really have to be ready for any jack Russell! They’re really smart and will take over! You’ve got to be stern training them at first. Once they’re house training is good then be prepared for a life of energy!
That's especially true about the males. You MUST impress the dog YOU are the alpha dog in the pack otherwise you'll always be a odds with "who runs the pack?" Not a good dog for 1st time owners unless you get professional training in the 1st year. Love these dogs though. Mine lived 18 years and had atomic powered energy all of those years.

I have a 7-1/2 year old Jack Russell, female. She's been in training since she was 6 months old. As a result she's a certified pet therapy dog and great with other dogs and loves children. She's a great tracker and loves agility and directional jumping. Yes, they're smart but they're also loyal and wants to be my constant companion. I wouldn't have it any other way.
@orionh3000 she played with the mice?? Oh my! My dog would just pick them up, shake them, and that was the end of it. Which is nice for me, because I hate watching anything get tortured. 😅
@orionh3000 Yes, my JR, kept me up all night chasing one.. I had no idea that she I had em... I was trying to figure out what the heck was up... She constantly, barked, ran around my bedroom, like a fool and I was fool too... But 8 am that morning, she brought me a gift. The dead mice. After, I covered it up to sweep it up, she lifted the paper to retrieve it again. Sandy is so smart...
I had my jack russel Myla for 15 yrs til someone ran over her in front of my house. She died in my arms and she took a part if me with her when she died. She was the best dog ever, the love of my life. She's been gone over a year and still think finger and miss her everyday. They are the best dogs ever and so smart. Would love to find another one similar to my girl Myla. She was my best friend.

Carol Stegemiller Aw honey I’m so sorry. When I rescued my Jack from an abuse case, She shook on a little pillow I gave her for 2 weeks. Then one afternoon she took off and came home to me after 12 hours of ducking cars. Now she’s scared to death of traffic I’m so sorry for your loss 💔
I have had several Jacks in my life and my last little angel passed the other day and I am heartbroken. They are very big dogs in tiny bodies and are amazing companions !
Jack Russels have been with my family since their inception. I have hunted with them on farms in the UK and have them as pets. The best way to control these little buggers is to get two of them, male and female, will be less likely to run away from home and will wear each others energy out, helps a bit. They are always learning and teach themselves tricks and yes they will constantly try to control you, Amazing little characters. I have noticed the American bred ones are a lot less agressive than any elsewhere, have owned them in Africa also, which is probably a good thing. Any man who has a girlfriend, fiancé or wife who detests dogs, there are some, intro them to these little things, will immediately change their viewpoint. No matter where I have lived and am going to live I will always have one of these little characters by my side, life is duller without them.
Amen brother. I am looking for a good dog that wants to do more than sit on the couch and get old. My grand kids would love the kind of dog you describe. Lots of videos on youtube with Jack Russel terriers in them. Thanks for your input.

My Angel arrived out of the blue in a similar way. Her master had attempted suicide by jumping from the 13th floor of our high rise he survived but his Jack Russel needed a home and I was the guy. She's been at my side ever since. I had lost my 17 year old Maltese/poodle a few weeks before and my new dog arrived on cue.
I got Bruce The Dog from Dorothy O Conner (DOCPAC) in Victoria TX. I was coming to get another dog that had already been spoken for, as it turns out. They pointed me over to Bruce. I was watching the volunteers bring in the dogs from the yard into their enclosures. Bruce came into his, but he noticed another dog dallying. He trotted back out of his enclosure and swiped one of her toys. The volunteer laughed and commented about what a toy thief he was. It was at that moment that I understood that Bruce thinks all toys are his, and hence he can't be a thief. He's just getting his toys back. He's a total blessing to me.
Just bought a jackaranian puppy 2 weeks ago and she is my world. Her name is Princess and she is so playful with the family. She lays on my chest close to my face when I'm laying down or she sits on my lap if I'm up and about. Amazing breed
Jack Russell’s originated in my local area and I have always kept them. I have never trained mine but never had any problems with them they are as long as they are loved and exercised
my son is 10 years old and he found a puppy wandering on the road, it keep following people and being ignored and bike just passed her by. my son bug his dad to turn back and he picked her up and asking people around if they knows someone have lost puppy. no one claim it. my son took her home and taking care of her ans he gave a name Cassey, and lately we just found out she is jack russel, vet said she is just 2 months old and cassey is now new spoled in the house, my son just love her and I got broke lol
My JRT made it to 14 years just last week. Blind, lung cancer. Really hated to do it, but he wasn't able to eat, was having breathing problems, and generally messed up. I still check "his" door to the back yard, in case he wants in.... Our daughter was visiting my sister in Dallas, and decided that since she was in college, us empty-nesters needed a pet. She bought Sammy from a guy who worked for my sister, and flew him to Columbus. A few days later, she drove him to us. "Hi Daddy! His name is Sammy, and he's 13 weeks. Bye." and back to Columbus. She also said that he doesn't bark or shed. He didn't until her car wheels hit the street.... Sammy lost his doggie door priveleges right before we moved here. Too much going outside at 0400 to bark. He wanted to be let out at about 0830 one Saturday morning, and I missed a step taking him downstairs. Using a cane ever since. I think he apologized.... The kid's also given us two cats. One is a diabetic, which is a bit of a PITA, and expensive. The other one's just afraid of himself. They're fun, though, and got along with Sammy. Eases the pain a little, the first night they were looking for him all over the house. I'm probably a little too old for another JRT, and my wife has threatened destruction if I even think about another dog, but, someday, maybe. Cute puppies anyway....
I lived in a very visited place in Hawaii on the Big Island ~ Waipio Lookout Park. People from all over the world visited and I ran my Jack Russels in that park till they forbade it. People would always compliment the dogs and some would tell stories about them. One person told me " The Jack Russel is a big bag of many dogs... some of those dogs are BIG dogs..." and this seems to me to be the one comment that really touches the truth. Their egos and performance is really alive waiting to be tested. One day on the beach as I came in from surfing a big Hawaiian guy asked me " Is THIS YOUR DOG ?" I cringed expecting to be in trouble... Yea why ? I replied... "Well I've saved him from drowning twice!" he said... Really HOW ? I asked... "Well he just goes in the stream and gets washed out to sea!" he exclaimed... Oh ! I said throwing a stick into the river...LIKE THIS ? and the dog ran and swam into the middle of the current and was washed out into the surf...He got the stick and brought it back... The guy rolled his eyes and said "Your dog gone DIE !" and I then told him a few things about my dog. The first day at the beach with "ODIN" (a god among dogs) He suddenly noticed the big waves as we walked down the beautiful beach > He sat down and watched fixated... Then one wave with whitewater about four feet high came roaring up the sand. Well Odin charged and met that wave at full speed. It knocked him around and he loved it. This was a tiny puppy the size of two small fists. Many stories came to me over the years about his prowess after my surf sessions in time. He was seen surfing like a seal, he's jumped off the big rocks into huge waves and got the stick. It's really incredible how amazing he was. I don't think he was EVER in trouble enough to be rescued like that and he always shook off the stress. One time He had two big holes in him that were probably made by a big dog who bit him. I took him home and superglued the wounds and he never flinched while shaving or stiching keeping perfectly still. Best dog ever.
I love my JRT... She's a blessing ❤️. Her name is Sandy and she is often my peace and my strength when I need it. If I'm sad, she knows. if I'm happy she jumps with me. I am in love with my baby, 😍 even though she is often hyper affectionate, follows me everywhere, and she is very loyal. It makes me feel loved and that she's loved by me. thanks Harrison for the sweet dog....

Fresh but awfully smart and teaching them is easy. Just be ready to rumble and lots of excersize because they’re energy is very high. Some people piss me off because they’re not ready for all that energy. Lots of abused ones poor things. They only want your love and company. So be prepared for a lifetime bomb.
Our jack russels LOVE giving kisses. Especially our little girl. Thankfully they don’t destroy furniture- but we have always supplied them with plenty of toys including things to both chew and tug. We also have a reasonable size garden they Cana go out and run in when they want. My parents take them for a walk most days. We do hand feeding with them so they are to do commands to get food. As puppies they went to puppy classes for 6-12 months. Our only real problem we have with them is they love to bark.
Jack Russells are definitly not for everyone mine always looks at me like he is plotting an evil plan, or wants to start a fight, highly manipulative, has an attitude problem, emotionally unavailable, highly intelligent and i think i got the one from the litter whos number 1 job or purpose is to be the pack leader -.-....cause no matter what it is, he tries to take control of any activity i try to do with him. I mean he is so wierd that if i tie him up infront of a shop and a thought comes "what if someone steals him" i think "woe onto the person who steals him, i wouldnt be suprised if they would return him 3 days later". LOLOLOL
Our little Jack Russell we named La'Nai, internet said that it was the Hawaiian word for heaven. She was given to us by some of the kindest people I know. La'Nai is 12 going on 5. She has never really grown up and still loves every bit of attention she gets. She has, what is called, a broken coat. Her body hair is wire and her face is smooth. Her father was smooth and her mother was wired. She was my Mom's dog. Jack Russells usually bond to one person, her breeder told us. We were fortunate as she bonded with both my Mom and myself. Mom died in 2017 and, while La'Nai grieves, she would cling more to me. She is a cuddler, but nuts also. I'll never get another one. I have had the best.
Well this answers my question then 😂 I have a staffy x that's quarter jack Russell. He looks like a staff but has the mind of a jack Russell. I had an inkling that was it but this has made it reality 😂
..... We got another rescue.... A white and tan "chihuahua" puppy..... Which never got longer legs but got more energetic each month passing... He can jump one meter up from where he stands, he has lockjaw and is constantly on the lookout for rabbits..... I can see part of his genetics here....
My mom has a Jack Russell/Rat Terrier Mix who is 14 years old and is fat and lazy but still is a lovable dog but sure does not get along with mom's Siberian Husky/Boxer Mix and they constantly fight but no injuries yet. Sugar is the JR/RT and Lucky is the SH/B and he is still young at 3 Years old and is very hyper and protective but loves me and he'll jump on me and lick me in my face, Sugar still licks me in my face but is no longer hyper.
I had a short legged jack named abbie she could pop a ⚽️. I loved her fur and ears and wet black nose I think she is Sally’s grandma abbie who will love sally and give her kisses
There’s nothing wrong with that, of a person not wanting to love because he lost his dog. Dogs and cats aren’t pets, their part of the family and it’s always a family loss to lose a pet like that. I lost my cat Cupid last year and I was devastated but I knew she was out of pain and I knew what the right decision was.
They are crazy good family dogs but they need a friendly firm hand and exercise!!! Then exercise and some more exercise! My dog went five miles with me more than once. I carry water and snacks. I thought I had finally worn him out mushroom hunting....well he was mousing. On the way home he met a friend and he was like he had never walked at all. They will change your life, they love you like nothing I had ever experienced before. Jazz has been trained and exercised but he likes to have the last word. Wouldn't have him any other way
Our Birdie is 5yo now and he is our very best friend. Loving, loyal, fearless, energetic and especially smart. Sometimes, my girl says Birdie is smarter than me...lol
I have a 2months old JRT very playful and its hard training him... any advice on how to get him to listen, I don't like the way he's always playing with strangers too much and I don't like it...any advice will be highly appreciated.
I have a one-year-old Jack Russell and I've had her from a puppy and had the same problem and you wouldn't believe treats for nothing first then stop only give rewards for good acts hang in there I am still working with mine I hope the little info helped they are a sweetie and lots of exercises, chew toys and brush every day

"suitable for apartments" is a dicey if not irresponsible statement...many apts do not have sufficient outside area nearby to run a JR and many people in apts frankly aren't inclined to bother. if you don't have a lot of outside space to walk/run a JR and/or aren't inclined to do this every day, you'd be an (irresponsible) idiot to get one. PS both rough and smooth coats do their share of shedding; my vacuum cleaner is 90% dog hair when I vacuum
