Welcome to my Music Theory Tutorials. In this music theory lesson I explain the fourth Chapter in ABRSM Music Theory in Practice Grade 4. In this tutorial I I explain how to understand breves.
I have been teaching music theory for over twenty five years and I’ll help you every step of the way - just as if you were sitting next to me. I have provided free a PDF information booklet with all the information you’ll need to work through the Grade 4 ABRSM Music Theory in Practise workbook, available in A4 and US Letter.
Music Theory is an integral part of any musician’s studies. Understanding the structures behind the music we play supports our practise and performance. Even if you don’t play an instrument understanding how music is constructed helps us to be a more informed listener.
I LOVE music theory! It’s like peeling back the layers of the music to look at the nuts and bolts that hold it all together and make the music work.

Do Sharps or Flats are placed before the double line of a double whole note? I suppose so but what do you think?
@SharonBill
@SharonBill 5 лет назад
Yes - before the double line. The double line is part of the note and so the sharps and flats come before that. :D

Hi Sharon, im confused by Exercise 1 question b. I don't understand how all those note values fit into the bar in 4/2 time. Any chance you could clarify? A dotted minim in worth a minim plus a crochet, plus the other crochet, so 3 beats. But then comes a semibreve - another 2 minims - doesn't that take us to 5 beats?
@SharonBill
@SharonBill 5 лет назад
Hi :D I think it's because you're still counting in crotchet beats - that's where you're getting confused. However, the maths does still work out: 4/2 is four minim beats: in bar two the dotted minim and crotchet make up two minim beats, then the semibreve gives another two minim beats = four minim beats. To double check your maths 4/2 is the same mathematical value as 8/4 (though not musically the same - and 8/4 isn't a legitimate time sig, but for argument's sake...) the dotted minim = 3 crotchet beats, + 1 crotchet + 4 crotchet beats in the semibreve .. so still adding up. Hope this helps!

@@SharonBill Thanks Sharon!! Yes that does help. I was confusing the value of a minim I think.. When a minim is the value of 1, then a dotted minim is 1.5 + the crochet makes 2 :)

@@SharonBill Pretty sure 8/4 is a legitimate, although uncommon time signature
