Thanks for playing the deck Phil! Your take away is pretty much exactly why I sent it over, it feels like there is something there, but its just a bit clunky. I'm going to try and keep toying around with interpreter. Maybe we can go into red for Fury and Broadside, as some other comments have mentioned. I watch LSV play way too much vintage cube and always see fun interactions that seem worth testing in other formats

@20:51 If you had moved lava spur boots to the construct token and they didn't draw a 4th land (which they didn't) then the ward 1 would have stopped flickerwisp from hitting the construct token.

23:05 ritual troll equip Shadowspear Only the Flickerwisps can attack productively. Next turn, if you draw a mana source, then you can play the other troll and equip boots forcing chumps and gaining life.

i expected a blue/black deck with cards like thought monitor and other affinity of artifact card to kinda convert use the 4 clues as mana adventage. but this is also pretty cool

Seems like 1 Mox Opal is enough. Try -3 Mox Opal + 1 Pithing needle + 2 Sheoldred's edict in the main deck. It will make room for 3 (or even maybe a full playset) of Daughti Voidwalkers in the sb

Carnage seems like it wants to be in something more like a burn deck. Ignore the clues and just play it in an all-out aggressive list that winds up hellbent naturally. Baubles don't lend themselves to that gameplan, nor does holding up mana for Urza's Saga. These two packages don't go together.

Carnage is both Red and Black, and wants you to be hellbent, so it probably wants to be in a list with both Grief AND Fury. Adding Fury would also help our "We don't have maindeck removal" problem. Simian Spirit guide as fast mana also doesn't get turned off by Lavinia or Chalice, and since we weon't be playing Urza's Saga, we won't care about having Opal or Lotus Petal in play for artifact count.

@@Karl_Smink The four clues the interpreter provides work really well with Saga, and the boots work really well with the interpreter. Plus, the baubles allow you to bank cards in play to avoid discarding to the interpreter. You are right about spending mana on Saga being a nonbo with it though. More pitch spells like fury seem to be a good answer to that issue, as you can dump your hand, while still making those karnstructs.

Hi phil, a little confused about game 1 match 1 why you decided to hold shadowspear in hand, not that it was obvious that a chalice was coming, i was just wondering what was your thought to hold it.

20:25 can anyone explain why that is the case? Usually the attacker gets to assign damage right?

After the blocks are the delcared the attacker chooses in which order the blocking creatures take damage. Then during the damage step the attacking player gets to assign damage, however you need to put at least 1 damage on each blocking creature in the order that was choosen during the declare blockers step, before you can freely decide where the rest of the damage goes. In this video he attacked with his 2/3 into a 2/1 Thalia and a 1/2 Thraben Inspector. He chose to order the blockers in the order of Thalia first than the Inspector. Since the Thalia was chosen first he has to assign 1 damage to it leaving only 1 damage to the Inspector. He couldn`t change the order after Thalia got Protection as the order gets chosen during blocks and damage is assigned in the damage step. I hope that helps.

@@Toastbrot1234567 Mostly correct. You have to put _lethal_ damage on each blocker before proceeding to the next one. Therefore, ordering it in the other direction means he'd have to put two damage on the inspector and none on the Thalia. Other than that very minor inaccuracy, a very good explanation. Note: Lethal damage is damage equal to the toughness of the creature (Or 1 if that damage was from a source with deathtouch) Stuff like protection doesn't change the amount of damage that is considered lethal, it just prevents the damage from being dealt.

I would play whatever Bryant Cook (The Epic Storm) is working on; his TES builds are traditionally very well tuned.

At 20:30 I’m confused about ordering blockers is that misplay? I thought attackers chooses how blockers take damage

It's not a misplay, and you're right about the attackers choosing damage, however the attacker chooses the damage order when blockers are declared. Once that order is chosen, it can't be changed and there's a chance for people to mess with things before damage is dealt. Then the attacker has to assign at least lethal damage to each creature in order before moving on to the next one. (This is why he has to assign at least one damage to the Thalia before moving on to the Inspector). So in order: -Declare blockers -> Attacker chooses blocking order (This is locked in and can't be changed later) -Priority pass (This is where the opponent gave protection) -Combat damage assigned (in blocking order) -> Damage dealt.

I won't lie that game at 39:00 is genuinely one of the times when Name Sticker Goblin is just genuinely worse than it's IRL counterpart ______ Goblin... Since then opponent would know how much the goblin makes ahead of time and could mulligan based on that information.

When I saw the card, I expected to see some sort of madness deck built around the easy discard outlet, but it's just dudes.dec. Probably makes more sense as a shell, I'm too combo brained. At least you're getting reanimate value.

I considered it but seemed like too many artifacts in the list, and opal just being better if we can enable it. maybe if we back off the artifacts theme for a more traditional scam build chrome mox makes sense instead

It's too bad this deck doesn't have any menace rewards, like Labyrinth Raptor or Sonorous Howlbonder. Having a deck with a theme without a reward for the theme rubs me the wrong way. Well, unless the theme is non-mechanical and the intent is for casual play, I guess.

I don't think you need a payoff for menace; creatures being difficult to block is good enough payoff already. See Grief, Stalactite Stalker, Troll of Khazad-dum, etc.

Phil from the future here: this is just another scam deck. Feel free to skip this one. Tune in next week when we have real fun by putting Carnage Interpretter into monoblack helm over 4 drops to fix its card draw issues and make it better at closing games.
