I got an email from my online place here in Ohio back in Jan saying they are only at 70% and expect more shipments but with the supply chain issue cannot count on it showing up by july. Every week since then items are being removed from their website and the prices go up a few bucks each week. I just bought all mine this week and maybe you should think about it too. Also I know you get yours in Ohio. This is the first year Ohio passed the law making them legal starting on July 1st. I expect people will be going nuts because of that. Always great to see plumber Jim! He works so fast it's hard to follow sometimes. Great attitude, great skill! - Eva looks more like grown up. She's really thriving! - I didn't understand some of his words about the kiln. I did hear 'vacuum' and 160 degrees. Nothing about cost, or heat source, or cost of operation. I think he said he turned it on from Guam? You prob already know the brand, the dealer, the cost, and the day you buy one. I'd like to recommend the microwave/vacuum type kiln. It will dry faster than a heated kiln, much less energy, and little to no sticker stain. I built one, but it only holds a max of 92 bd ft. What's really interesting, it'll dry everything uniformly, without any stickers at all!

Kiln dried wood is very popular in the UK, I like to cut and dry my own wood but if I run out I can get a 1m3 of wood from green to less than 15% I just have to give my log man a week to dry it if he hasn't got any ready to sell. He also powers his kiln with firewood so really eco friendly.

Mike when it comes time to take the load of oak to the kiln it would be interesting to know the weight before and after. Do you have a weight station near by? Thanks Mike

Jim will agree it’s like a puzzle. You have to instal it in order, so pieces can be moved to make connections or sweat a single joint before you move a section back into the wall. Varies on wood type and starting MC% just like with slabs and lumber. Sometimes we don't get a full load of lumber to dry from customers, so we have to baffle the end to get proper airflow. But the kiln costs us about $125 a week in electricity to run it with a full load.
@BKD70
@BKD70 2 года назад
I'm curious about the energy cost to run the kiln... Can you charge enough premium on the kiln dried firewood to recoup your energy cost and still have customers willing to pay that premium? Can you use an outdoor wood burning furnace as your heat energy source for the kiln?

@martin_kiln_and_slabworks
@martin_kiln_and_slabworks 2 года назад
About $125 per week in electricity for a full load and I going to test it soon, but theoretically, I can get 4 baskets in per load. Our main income is drying slabs and lumber for local sawmills. We usually have some void space in the ends of the stacks that have to be baffled for proper airflow, so we're looking at firewood, 6/4 cutting board stock, etc for resale. Other kiln owners have cut plywood for walls to control the baffle airflow....can't resell that so it just seems like a waste.

@@seanpuffer8436 plus freight, and then installation if you don't have a 10K forklift or crane on your property. I wouldn't buy this solely for drying firewood. Definitely better options out there.

Interesting to learn about kiln drying and what case hardening is. I like that setup.

Nice to see 3 professionals discussing there trades. Keep up the great videos. I don't think you will be able to get a kiln before Melissa gets her swimming pool. Good luck!

Mike, a lot of folks use PEX nowadays instead of copper. Is there an advantage to one over the other?

Hey Mike, Really enjoy your posts - lots of good information. The "field trips" are enjoyable, and it's nice to just "hang out with the guys sometimes. I do appreciate the effort you put into your posts, "the small talk and information you share with us. (Melissa does a great job too!)

That was a really informative video. Plumber Jim did a super neat, nice job. Don't you wish all the trades took that much pride in their work as Jim apparently does!! Nice work all around. Ron
