'Absolutely devastating': Two dead, thousands flee New Mexico wildfires

A second death was reported Wednesday in a pair of wildfires in New Mexico that have forced the evacuations of thousands of people in and around the town of Ruidoso and destroyed around 1,400 structures. Rep. Melanie Stansbury, D-N.M., discusses.

In Chicago it is not that bad, a week of 92 instead of 87, it is a little worse but not end of the world, 102 would be a lot worse. The fire this is crazy, cutting lots into a very dry forest and put home there, I wouldn't insure that. Ya, it's like living in a vacation resort in the woods, it's too dry and when will your house burn down with maybe you in it.

I lived in Ruidoso until last November. Most of it is Mescalero Apache Reservation. It's south of the village and wraps around it to the west. Ruidoso is very compact town and most homes are in the ponderosa pines. I knew it was a matter of time this would happen and why I sold my home. One of the best decisions I've made in my life

Forest management. Pull all that dry crap out of there. Then plant Ice Plant in patches everywhere. And let it do its thing. It needs very little moisture. It shouldn't hurt the environment. Then that can be used as a barrier or at least help prevent fires from spreading. If you do the little things now, then they add up to big things that happen down the road. Just an idea. 🤷

There's about 300,000 square miles of protected and national forest in the US, plus who knows how many privately owned. Pull it out how? With thousands of people on the ground with rakes, and helicopters lifting all the stuff... somewhere? What you're suggesting is a monumental task, and basically impossible considering some of the terrain and weather.

@@mile_high_topher A Duff rake is a large piece of mechanical equipment that chops and grinds up anything smaller than a tree, nobody thinks you can rake up entire forests. You rake fire breaks and problem areas to reduce and control fires. Or is this to complicated for you.
