Alicia is classically trained that’s why the instrumentation is so good. “You Don’t Know My Name” and “Un-thinkable(I’m Ready)” are great songs to react to.

This was her splashy debut in 2001, I think she was 19 or 20. She's a classically trained pianist. She was the queen of the Grammys the following year winning Best New Artist , Song of the year, among others. She's got staying power because she's stayed true to her talent and gifts over 20 years. She did a few years as a judge on " The Voice"

Alicia is a prodigy. She was extremely tuned in to her self expression at a young age hence was able to write and perform so young. Brilliant talent! She paid a heavy price, emotionally and mentally and had a breakdown after her initial successes and dealings with the music industry. She burnt out and made her way back to sanity and balance, thank goodness. A very strong, wise woman. I love her! And yes, I still have my CD from 2001. ❤

I got my teaching credential in '01 and started substitute teaching right away. When this song came out, some elementary school girls were singing "Fallin'" and I had to ask what the song was. I tracked down the song, and was blown away that this girl, Alicia Keys, was 19 and had written, produced, and played piano on her debut. I got instant Stevie Wonder vibes from the song, and her whole package, being basically a musical prodigy. The part of the music video where the female prisoners are shown in the jumpsuits doing hard labor made me think of those women who are in that sort of place as a product of bad relationships, where there was some sort of abuse or coercion by a lover that lead them to commit a crime.

FALLIN' is my favorite Alicia Keys song but other standouts by her, in my opinion are my #2 fave TRY SLEEPING WITH A BROKEN HEART, LIKE YOU'LL NEVER SEE ME AGAIN, A WOMAN'S WORTH, UN-THINKABLE, IF I AIN'T GOT YOU, KARMA...

Fun fact: this song (2001) and If I Ain't Got You (2004) are TWO of the FOUR top 10 songs written/produced/performed by a female solo artist of the 2000s. As in the last 22 years, which is wild. She has been in the industry for a while. She was signed in 1996ish at 15 years old to Columbia Records AND got a scholarship to Columbia Uni. She dropped out to focus on the music, but the label tried to make her something she didn't want to be (Mariah ish). So she started producing a lot of her first album on her own (including this song) with her co-producer boyfriend at the time in their apartment at 17yo. The label didn't like it, thought it sounded like a demo and they shelved her. She was basically stuck for a few years in the late 90s when she could've debuted. She did release a song on some Def Jam Christmas album in 1998 alongside Chaka Khan, Brian McKnight and a song on the Men In Black soundtrack in 1997 alongside Will Smith, Destiny's Child, Snoop (mind you, Alicia and Beyonce were 16yo and 15yo at the time!). She managed to get out of the contract eventually WITH her own material and got VERY lucky when Clive Davis left Arista Records to start his own (J Records) and he took a chance on her. Basically promoted the hell out of her (including putting her on an Oprah episode alongside other new soul/R&B singers at the time like Jill Scott and India Arie), just like he did Aretha and Whitney back in the day. So she finally got to debut in 2001 with the album her first label didn't like. Just a bit of backstory to explain why she said she was told that Fallin' wouldn't work.

Alicia Keys came out when she was just 18 years old and she was discovered by Clive Davis , her first album is amazing it makes me cry because she has songs like “ Trouble “ , “ Goodbye “ etc that are amazing and Alicia Keys is a Classic trained Pianist she started at just 5 years old playing piano , her mother bought her a piano and now Alicia is a mother of two Boys one of her Sons has played with her on stage lol it’s amazing , I believe her oldest Son Egypt also plays the piano and sings he’s on one of the songs she released .

She actually came out at 16yo in 1997, she had a song on the Men In Black film sountrack, alongside Destiny's Child and Will Smith and them. She was actually discovered by her manager at the time in 1994 when she was 13yo. Clive Davis came in later. Alicia left her first label (Columbia) because they didn't know what to do with her. Clive left his label (Arista) to start his own (J Records) and Alicia was right there for the taking. He allowed her to make the music she wanted to make, which eventually led to her finally releasing a debut album in 2001 at 20yo.

I'm finna be a lil messy: Rumors was going around that she was gay because of the way she dress(which was dumb) so when No One came out they made her dressed a lil more fem for the second album. So that's why she looks so diff frm the debut to to the 2nd album.

Alicia was the youngest artist to ever completely write and self produce her own full first album. She was discovered by Clive Davis and her first appearance that really launched her career was the Oprah Winfrey Show. Clive Davis bought her to the Oprah Winfrey show. When she first came out she was marketed as and became the princess of neo soul music but over the years she's gotten further and further away from that and became more of a pop/R&B type artist and I believe that hurt her a little because people fell in love with her as this brand new resurgent of neo soul music. She was in a category with the likes of Angie Stone, Maxwell, D'Angelo, and Jill Scott and then she sort of went more pop / r&B with a twist of hip hop and because of that I think she got kind of mixed in with a larger base so she almost got kind of flooded out because there were so many all coming out at once. Don't get me wrong, she still does great music but when I want to hear Alicia keys I always go back to her first two albums because to me that was her best music.
