She is an out lesbian and when this came out, she was out at a time when being out wasn’t as common. Huge to have someone so talented and from my community was so significant.

her song (from this same AMAZING album) "Silent Legacy" is also an amazing storytelling journey about stifling your need to freely express yourself in a time when society still preferred you remain in the closet and avoided the topic.

Man, back when this came out I remember listening to the record and telling a friend that her songwriting sounded oddly masculine and reminded me a lot of Bruce Springsteen and stuff like that, and my friend looked at me like I was the dumbest guy ever to walk the Earth and told me that Melissa Etheridge was openly gay.

I first seen Melissa Etheridge on some late night talk show back in the 90's. I thought,man,this woman is a cross between Springsteen and Janis Joplin. Then I got to see her in concert twice. She puts on a show. She connects with her audience,not just her live performances, but in her songs that many can relate to.Wait until you hear her song "I WANT TO COME OVER".Its hard to choose just one great song.

She was huge in the 90's! She and the Indigo Girls were the most popular acts among the Lesbian community and the voices of lesbian life in the 90's era. That said, Melissa has been around a very long time. After the success of this album she had life events that took her out of the limelight for a period. She had 3 children, whose donor is David Crosby of Crosby,Stills and Nash fame. He is an old friend of hers and she hopes that between their shared genes that maybe one of the kids will be musically gifted. Then she had a battle with cancer. Today, she is alive and well.

Oh WOW! I dig reaction videos. And of course I have my favorite creators. Tonight I thought to myself, "I don't think I've seen a Melissa Etheridge reaction." So I went looking... and that's how I found you. This was a goddamn delight! Your reaction was SO pure and SO genuine... and so APPROPRIATELY enthusiastic! Cuz it's Melissa! It's Come To My Window! I saw at least one other person in the comments has mentioned the greatest song she ever wrote - off this same album: Silent Legacy Imagine a songwriter as good as Melissa Etheridge taking on growing up gay in Kansas! "Come to my Window" and "I'm the Only One" are my fav Etheridge songs ... but she has so many great songs. I would have loved to see her in concert. One of the things I like about her voice is that its gritty and raspy. Yet there are times when she can hang a note (like how you ended up pausing as she did that long note) ...but then, as gritty as her voice is....she adds in seemingly off script voicings that are even more gritty and raspy.

The video has Juliette Lewis (Cape Fear and Natural Born Killers are a couple of her most well known movies) in it and it's really beautiful, she was given the lyrics and a mostly bare room, it's really moving. My favorite Melissa Etheridge song is All American Girl, it speaks to my soul on so many levels.

Her live shows are epic. Once made the 120 mile round trip to see her 3 times in 4 nights at the Roxy in West Hollywood. Love the rockers but my favorite ME song is actually a ballad called Nowhere To Go. Such evocative Springsteen-esque lyrics and Melissa's vocals, without the heavy instrumentation, will knock you out. Heavily heavily recommended.

If you do this song, make sure you get the full version (5 minutes plus). There's a shorter version that drops a whole verse. The best verse, actually.

Yes, I love "Nowhere to Go" -- it's an amazing portrayal of the constraints of life for many if not most lesbians at the time. Being different from most couples is somewhat less stigmatized now ("love is love") but I don't think the reality of most people not understanding our relationships very well has changed much, if at all. The verse that's not in the video is definitely the most important one!

@@michelelearner297 The song works for any relationship but I can totally see how it would hit even deeper for you. Are you familiar with a folkie singer named Cheryl Wheeler? She alternates between very evocative songs and stuff that is hilarious. She wrote a gorgeous love song for her now-wife called Gandhi/Buddha and there's a vid of her telling both the touching and funny tale of getting married when it was only legal to do so in a few states. She then had a funny send-up of her own love song. Let me dig them up.

If u get the chance, please react to the song Shatter Me by Lzzy Hale and Lindsey Sterling. The song is artistically phenomenal in every way imaginable. Lindsey's incredible violin skills, interspersed with Lzzy's edgy, hard-rock vocals is a combination that sounds odd on paper, but is melodically harmonious when you really hear the song. I think it has all the elements that someone like yourself would look for in a good song. You'll be pleasantly surprised, assuming u haven't already heard it!

I feel that at the time when her album, Yes I Am came out in 1993 she was indeed the female equivalent to Bryan Adams. This album by 2010 had sold 4.3 million copies. She is amazing in concert. I don’t agree with you that Bryan Adams was more popular
