This unedited video has a focus of abstract watercolour and acrylic painting and intuitive play as the inspiration unfolds. This is the process and art style that I have come to love as it is very intuitive, explorative, playful and experimental. I embrace happy accidents and paint over areas that I don't enjoy and highlight and encourage marks/painting that I love.
I focus mostly on painting over marks on 138lb paper from my coil Canson mixed media art journal. I have a pre-filled "stay wet" palette of acrylic paints , in a mix of brands and colours. I start the art on paper by painting over already dried mark-making that was primarily black acrylic paint. I do demos of how to start the process of cleaning my brush by using another piece of watercolour paper on the side.
I also show a bright and colourful page of marks from where I was testing a new set of 24 Koi watercolour brush pens.
Supplies I used:
Canson XL mixed media paper, 9x12" (coil book).
Acrylic paints in a variety of colours and brands.
Masterson's Stay Wet Palette.
Princeton mixed media brushes in flat, angled, and round in a variety of sizes.(available at Michael's Canada)
Skewer and palette knife for "etching".
Watersoluble pencil crayons, such as Stabilo "woody's".
Watercolour
Spray bottle
Gloves
Old works on paper to paint over
Koi Watercolour brush pens
pencil

It was super helpful to see you go through the process of creating the layers. The result is so interesting and also encourages me to try things out! I love hearing you talk through your process. I also appreciate all the tips you share in your videos. Thank you for continuing to share these videos with us! ❤️

Thanks so much Cathy. I'd love to see some of your acrylic paintings or play... you are very good at watercolour!

Loved this!! Amazing how it morphed as you went along, found myself saying “yes” , “no” , and then “perfect” all while holding my breath!!!

haha. I'm sure if I watched it back I'd be thinking the same thing and depending on my mood that day- it would be totally different! Thanks Dee-Ellen. xx

I’m curious so when you paint these in your sketchbook is it just. For sketchbook practice or would you take it out and sell it and make prints? This turned out really beautiful. You are good at quieting paintings down. I always struggle with that.

thanks! I do a bit of both- paint in sketchbooks for fun and also to potentially sell my work/ reproduce it into print. Most of my art journals/sketch books are just for me , for play and exploration... but a few of the higher quality ones,- I can take out the page and frame it or I love it enough to photograph.

🌬🎨You INSPIRE me. We do have a lot in common. Watercolor is so relaxing. I Actually did some collage today😊 after looking at all the papers/ magazines / so much stuff. I have to start playing and using what I have And i finish my ' In memory of' Acrylic painting Angel today 😅 I painted her last year just kept looking at her and kept telling myself she just needs Something More. Have a Beautiful day/night. I have the wet palette as well. 3 lol 2 big ones but i like the smaller one the sponge just don't hold up. See yea soon.😊

I hadn't heard of a wet pallette but it's a great idea. I was in Home Bargains in the UK and saw some airtight resealable food boxes £2 each and thought they would be like Allisons wet pallette. So I cut a piece of absorbent kitchen cloth to fit in the bottom, and a piece of greaseproof paper on top and it works brilliantly. Thankyou

Oh that is awesome that you'd made your own "stay wet" palette Chris! Thanks for sharing.... I'm not sure what absorbent kitchen cloth would work best? My sponge isn't holding up that well and I'd love to replace it with an affordable option!

The techniques and colors in this painting seems so intriguing with endless jumping off points. Well I guess it’s time to pick some colors and start something - thank you 💖 - Allison, I’ve really enjoyed the videos that I’ve watched. I wanted to let you know that I was initially surprised at the video length but definitely wouldn’t want it any other way.

I bet the art teacher just loves having your son in his her art class. He is probably really excited that his mom is an artist. So cute he copied your style. I was impressed how well he did. Back to your video:)

my husband and I were quite surprised when he painted that one- as it's totally different than how he usually creates/plays but very much how I paint! I'd like to be a fly on the wall in his art class... haha.

I love hearing your decision making process and self-talk. It’s easy to assume people who make beautiful abstract art professionally have it all figured out as they go. I love seeing that it is such an imperfect and reflective journey with so much opportunity for courage and self compassion ❤
