My tour of Abu Simbel, one of ancient Egypt's most magnificent temples. Built by the legendary pharaoh Ramses the Great around 1224 BC, Abu Simbel was the crown jewel of the many building projects completed during his reign. Come with me as I tour both temples of the Abu Simbel complex: the great temple features Ramses and various ancient gods, while the secondary small temple was dedicated to the goddess Hathor and Ramses favorite wife, Nefertari. The temple, located 3 hours south of Aswan, was saved by UNESCO in 1968 when the creation of the Aswan High Dam would have flooded the area. It was dismantled and put back together on higher ground, so its location today is not where Ramses originally had it built.
