Some of my favorites: "The Meaning Of Things" (a collection of essays), "Towards The Light" (The Story of the Struggles for Liberty and Rights that Made the Modern West ). I also bought his "Good Book: A Secular Bible", but I'm not yet sure what to make of it...

I agree that education is important and the fact of it seems to me practically self evident. However, "key and only hope of our progress and survival" may not be enough. Here's why I hold that view... I find the Bicameral theory most compelling. It proposes (compressing a 400 page book into a single paragraph) that modern consciousness arose in humanity during a one thousand year span beginning about three thousand years ago. The theory states that, before three thousand years ago, the human psyche lacked a self concept. This lack deprived them of the ability to create a control system that could manage the social complexity that arose whenever population began to exceed about a million members and they collapsed back into tribal communities in the surrounding countryside. This rise and fall of civilization repeated again and again until particular circumstances (involving the invention of writing) gave birth to self consciousness. And so here we are, two thousand years later, living in an extraordinarily successful global civilization with a population approaching eight billion (albeit with a few large groups of retards scattered about). What I'm suggesting is that we might be in need of another transformative leap in consciousness that will enable us to better manage eight, nine or ten billion people in a way that will conduce to our collective survival. I can already see a change in the psyches of those who appear to be addicted to networked cell phone technology. The thing that worries me though, I don't believe we have time for a series of failed experiments like the pre-biblical folks enjoyed. In short, we seem to be in need of a new mode of consciousness. And then there's AI to consider...
