This is an overview of the groundwork in the academic art of riding, and this video is meant as a rough guideline. Each of these exercises is made up of many education steps, so it's not recommended to skip any steps and start somewhere in the middle. I have given specific numbers to these steps, for the purpose of clarity, but be aware that educating horses is often not so linear.
Groundwork is an important foundation for the horse's education. Time invested here is time saved later! The horse learns to carry itself properly first, before it learns to carry a rider. Some horses cannot be ridden at all, or are in need of rehab, and the academic groundwork is a meaningful way to build up muscle, coordination and strength.
