I started watching this as a joke many years ago, but now I come back to this video every now and then to legitimately listen to the message. There's something brilliant about this.
I'm Vietnamese and I've learned Japanese and English for years. From my point of view, his skill is incredible in this vid. Not only he put so much spirit in acting, but he knows all the points to make it interesting. There're 2 technics that I can point out: the rising intonation at "the tail" MU at the end of "CHIIMU"( team), and the alteration of accent in linked word.
Japanese has the high-low accent, while English has strong-weak one. So they use that high-low accent to simulate English, and it is somehow OK. But Japanese has a weird rule that change words' high-low pitch when 2 words are linked. Like HAru(spring) and yaSUMI(break) cam be linked to creat haRUYAsumi( spring break). And when they apply this rule to English, it's so weird because the Jap-Enlish words' accent are no longer sound like the original English.
if you were in that movie instead of al pacino it would've been like 10x better. black quarterback, female owner, japanese coach. hell, all they'd need is some mexican linemen and the movie would be complete
I realize I am responding to a 14-year-old comment-but here it goes: I am American and I PERFECTLY understood (most of) what he said. I wish my Japanese friends would speak English this way, in fact, rather than how they usually do, which involves their speaking really quietly, very fast.
Hey salaryman, yes, first time I did was back in Highschool. Everyone just cracked. I was able to do still do it because my first language was Japanese before moving to Canada when I was 11 years old
this is a demonstration of exaggerated japanese accent. that's because of the phonological structure of japanese language. there must be a vowel after a consonant, and the pair of a consonant and a vowel is the smallest unit in the japanese phonology. for example, in a japanese sentence "ohayougozaimasu" which is meaning "good morning", there's no any consonant which is not followed by a vowel. "o-ha-yo-u-go-za-i-ma-su" no any closed syllables like "hat" or "of".
Love how he subbed it.. the other 2 are also good cause i can somehow make out the subs on the tv but maybe not other people. i really like your videos... the accent lesson ones... thx for posting. ^_^
football→futtobooru team→chiimu pronunciation like these, Japanese people call it "KATAKANA EIGO", and many of them think it stupid. therefore, this movie is funny for many Japanese. by the way, Japanese one's average length is about 6inches, ok.
in CHIIMU(we either heal as a team), he raised the intonation at MU. It's the way Japanese usually do when they speak Japanese, but it become so weird when applied to Japanese-English, because it drives attention to the part "MU".
I sort of got a pretty good find as most Japanese say gentlemen like 'gentleman'. I mean 'women' goes with the same way as well. Wonder they might start having a lot of hard time when it comes to all about the difference between the sound 'a' and 'e'? I love Englishes. =)
Thanks for your comments again, Yes, I am Japanese, Be proud of the Japanese accent! No need to make your english fluent by having British, American or Australian accent. Keep the Japanese accent and be proud. Why are you so Ashamed of the Japanese accent??
i agrea. You english guys have a very specific tone... i can almost spell foreigns language spoken words easily but it's the english language i had the most difficulties. The japanese uses a tone wich is very similar the tone we use to speak the french in europe. (For example, canadians use a more english tone and sometimes it's really hard to understand what they say, even they uses the same language we do! No offense for the canadians here :) )
thanks for your comments, well, I guess not everyone has the same point of laughter. Just doing what seems funny to some people. If you don't find it funny, I'm sorry that you don't get the point.
The English language contains all the phonetics that Japanese has, so I would assume that once an English speaking person learns Japanese it's rather simple for 'em to understand - all you'd have to work on is the accent most likely. I might be wrong. :)
I think he can speak English really fluently and just emphasizes Japanese accent!! But it doesn't matter for me because it's sooooooooo funny!!!! I wanna make this kind of videos... LOL
