I like to use the 6” cube dies for cutting out quilts

Hi Kristen, I am Norma, from Blue Wren in Australia. Our foam is different than the Accuquilt foam, so initially it may feel different putting it through the rollers. Actually, if you have a pair of calipers, and compare the thickness of the dies, you will fiond in fact that ours are 0.2 of a millimetre thinner...not thicker. Our mats and dies together make the same thickness... that is why we include the free mat with each die. The mats...if you take a moment to read the label back, are semi self-healing. One can easily cut 6 layers and even 8 layers with the strip mats where the blades are all the same direction. I hope you try them, the 6" x 12" does work in the Go Me, the Go Baby and even the Sizzix big shot or Fabi ( in that case with two of our mats underneath to give the die the correct height and one of our mats on top). Of course the lid that the smaller dies have is just for protection... I hope you remove it before cutting! From your description yuou say it is thicker, when in fact it is not.

Apologies Norma it felt thicker to me but you are right I didn’t actually get out any tools to measure it! Thanks for the correction! I love that your dies come with free mats - it’s a great addition!

@norma5155
@norma5155 6 месяцев назад
@@traceyfinch2615 Yes we do. It works out about $35 for one die, but you can estimate shipping as before you finalise the purchase and will find out that shipping costs come down as each die is added. People find it more economical to add three dies. Remember you are getting the mat included.

I have been using the AccuQuilt for several years. I will warn you that I've had some issues on older strip dies with the foam coming away from the board it's glued onto. Accuquilt used to replace them, but they no longer do. So just know that they don't last forever. That said I still find the system useful for me.

At the end of January I fell down the Accuquilt rabbit hole. It was basically a reward to me from me for surviving the dreaded thing that shall not be named. I'm in the States so all mine have been purchased through Accuquilt. The first thing I got was the 8" cube bundle with the GO! cutter included the 2.5" strip die and the Eleanor Burns book. Since then I've ordered lots more and always when they have a 40% off sale - except I just ordered the GO Big for 35% off. My favorite die so far is the 2.5" square multiples.

I have the 6 inch finished strip cutter. I use it for borders and to cut squares which are the perfect size to pair with 9 patch blocks using the 8” qube’s 2 1/2 inch (2 inch finished) squares. The 9 patches are the same size as the 6 inch finished squares cut from the strip die.

Hi Kristen! Thanks for sharing your collection! I like how you used the crazy petals die in the rainbow raindrops baby quilt. So inspirational. I don't have that die yet (but I'll add it to my wish list) and I'm really trying to save money because my sewing machine is on her last leg and I want to upgrade. When you use the alphabet die, do you use the embroidery file that comes with the dies?
@ScrapFabricLove
@ScrapFabricLove 2 года назад
No I don’t use the embroidery files. I don’t have the embroidery add on for my machine. I just raw edge appliqué the alphabet letters after temporarily fusing them down with heat n’ bond. Sometimes I use a blanket stitch and sometimes just a zigzag.

I love my hst dies. Use them with qst to make flying geese too. Saves time (no squaring up or cutting off dog ears) and fabric for me. I now buy dies as I need them. Like you I have several I haven’t used that were on sale and I would like to do them but…….
@ScrapFabricLove

I need to try those two dies! It’s on my list! It’s the squaring up that has made me hesitant to do many hst based quilts so I probably should unwrap this die and have a go!

I thought the dies need to stored flat? So it's ok to stack on end?
@ScrapFabricLove
@ScrapFabricLove 2 года назад
I’ve actually read they shouldn’t be stored flat - they should be stored like books on bookcases apparently. The cutting mats should be kept flat but I just keep them in between the strip does that are pretty tight together so they stay flat that way.
@terridean4784

Accuquilt claims that if you use the Blue Wren dies it voids your warranty. I believe the warranty is only for a year though so after that go for it. My friend buys Blue Wren dies and says that after shipping to the USA and the conversion to Australian dollars, the cost is about the same or maybe slightly cheaper than buying from Accuquilt, so the benefit is in finding dies you like that aren’t available through Accuquilt. She has had no problems using them on her machine. You do need to use the mats that come with them though.
@ScrapFabricLove

Interesting thanks.
@janicelough3918
@janicelough3918 11 месяцев назад
The Blue Wren dies each come with a free mat. I have found that their regular prices are still less than after waiting to catch a sale on the Accuquilt. That makes the whole purchase much less than Accuquilt. And they are not made in China like all of the Accuquilt products. Just saying. I too am from Toronto, now living in Washington state.

My daughter and her husband got me started with 6” block bundle of dies for Christmas. I desperately want to purchase another set, probably 12” bc multiples of 6 open lots of possibilities. Frankly, I just cannot justify spending over $100 a pop per cheaper die. How do you justify in your mind the expense? Or was this from a wonderfully generous family member or friend? I hope my question doesn’t sound judgmental. I’m just assuming everyone is feeling the crunch over grocery storyprices.

I have bought some died new (usually on sale) but I have also bought many secondhand on eBay or from facebook sewing destash groups. I think there also some quilt guilds that have arrangements to swap and share dies, though not the one I am in.

You may have found this out already, but AccuQuilt dies can be used with the Sizzix. You need the adapter plate G, but I don’t know if that is available anymore. If not, just add layers of cardstock until you get the right thickness. Good luck.

I think it is one of those love it or hate it things isn’t it? I use all my scraps no matter what size so having funny shaped leftovers is kind of a challenge for me 😂! But I get that that isn’t for everyone! I’m sure you could resell yours to someone else if you don’t like it.
@sadiejosiemom
@sadiejosiemom 2 года назад
You might want to think about how you could cut your fabric smaller so that there isn't much waste. If you rough cut it a half inch bigger all around (of the blade area - not bigger than the die) there is minimal waste. I originally got it to make precuts from my really old stash.
@Merrigold.Quilts
@Merrigold.Quilts 2 года назад
Not for those of us who have arthritis. I would have had to stop sewing if not for accuquilt
@terridean4784
@terridean4784 Год назад
You can rip or cut strips that are 1/2” to 1/4 inch larger than the die. For example if you are cutting five inch charm squares you can rip a piece of fabric to 5 1/4 inch if you are very careful about your placement over the dies. You gets just slivers of waste. This waste, to me is acceptable for the accuracy of the cuts. If you make very accurate cuts with your rotary cutter and ruler then there is still the benefit of speediness of your cuts. A queen size binding can be cut with one pass of the Accuquilt 2 1/2 inch strip die.
