I cleared a lot for a customer s few years ago. older guy. he watched all day long. he said make sure you save me 4 big white oak logs I do wood working and want some lumber cut. At the end of the day we loaded up a trailer load of pine pulpwood and took it to the woodyard on the way home. he also watched that. Get there the next morning and hes mad as hell saying weve stole all his hardwood logs that he wanted to save. I was like sir you only had 4 white oak trees and the logs are right there in pile where you wanted them. He kept going around to every big tree stump and measuring it with his tape measure and asking well wheres that log... well sir thats a pine and its right there in the other pile... It took all day for him to realize every log I cut other than pulpwood was still laying on the job.

I recently got 100 loads of dirt for free from a subdivision. I just had had to pay for their loader time, and hire the trucks. Now, dirt to site time was only 9 minutes each way, with less than 2 minutes loading time/dump time, so they should have been able to do close to 3 loads/hour. With the loader hours, my cost per load should have been less than $35. But instead of 3 loads/hour we were getting less than 1.3 loads/hour. They kept showing up to together. I was curious what was going on (the owner of the trucks was driving too), so I drove up the loading site. The loader who worked for a different company told me they were sitting and waiting for each other...sometimes the lead truck would sit for 10 minutes. The first truck would get loaded, then wait for the others to finish loading. Then they moved out together like like a bunch of girls. Because the owner gets paid by the the hour, sticking together means more sitting, less driving, less work, and less wear on the truck. He knew that I was expecting close to 3 loads and hour, so he sat out of sight either at the load area, or dump area depending on where I was. Such bs, and I'll never use him again.

Yea he messed up on the volume metric. If he has no way to measure the weight how does he know he is stealing. Wet dirt vs dry dirt. When I buy mulch, sand, or stone its by yards. Only place I’ve seen buy weight is decorative rocks. Each being 5-20lbs. That’s only because they aren’t a uniform size.

The companies that had religious quotes plastered all over their trucks, or in some other way let you know how "religious" they were, had no problem whatsoever screwing you over. It happened enough to make us very wary of it. This isn't to knock religion in any way at all. Just the person/company. Always wondered if this was the case for many others.

Been in commercial construction my whole life. In those 35+ years I still haven't figured out the whole ton vs. yard vs load thing. A ton of sand cost the same if it's wet or dry. Ton of engineered fill costs the same wet or dry. Actually wet dirt cost more since you need to spend money to dry it out. So if I'm buying dirt I'm thinking the best bang for my buck would be to buy in the summer. Enjoy your video's thanks!

There is a reason for written contracts, get it in writing.
@edrdnc6706

I totally agree. I deal with construction contracts all the time and they have a bad rep. I remind people that a contract isn't a way to bludgeon someone into doing work they didn't see in the fine print, (or it shouldn't be). It should be a way to explain the expectations (scope) of work and actively minimize ambiguities. Even if it's an email or text, put it in writing, and get an OK reply. ANY change that effects the time or cost should also be documented, with both sides explicitly agreeing, even if it's a no-cost-change mod to the scope. If scope creep gets to be too much, it's easy to clearly show the previous collection of the nibbles. This usually will make it clear that the sum of the extra work will talk longer and/or cost more, and the one benefiting will usually readily agree, or scratch all the changes.

But let’s at least get something out in the open; if you shake a mans hand and look him in the eye...you better make damn sure you do exactly what you said you were gonna do. Someone who won’t honor a handshake is a coward.

I do heating and air for a living, occasionally you run into a person like this, who just doesn’t want to be happy, they look for the ways to be unhappy. If I get the feeling like that from someone I usually just leave.

That's one of the hardest things about owning a business is your an honest man. You'll take it in the shorts before you'll screw someone over. And yet you get accused. It not only hurts but it eats at ya, you try to let it go but it's in back of your mind. Hang in there Mike. Your surrounded by bunch of great people who know the truth. And WE all know the truth. One best channels I've come across. 👍

I have quietly watched how you run your business on this media. I run my biz in a the same way. We try to over deliver & to keep the peace at almost any cost. But we have to draw the line somewhere. As long as we take the "high road" in every situation & we do it in a way where it is Glorifying God, then we can sleep at night and know that we did the right thing. God Bless you, your family & your team. Glenn Bell

You did the right thing. I have been in the construction business for over 30 years. Your name and reputation are everything. I am like you in that I will screw my self over, before I would ever do it to someone else. I miss the days of doing business on a handshake and your word. Unfortunately every once in a great while, we come a cross such an individual as you did. In that case you have to cut your losses, continue to handle it like you did, and just be the better man. Word gets around as you well know, and it will catch up to him. More importantly, your reputation will be that much better for your actions.

Sorry man. I've had a couple of deals turn sour on me like that. Some people are determined they have to be a victim. Call the law and explain your situation. Have them standing by if crap goes sideways when you go get your Volvo. Offering to pay for the extra load you didn't get shows good faith. Keep your head up. Love the videos.

But there is a problem with contracts too im a steel guy I build metal buildings, houses,etc if it's made of steel I build it....I don't know how it is in other states but here in Oklahoma a contract is better for wiping your ass not saving it.....even with a contract if you put anything permanent on anyone's property it belongs to THEM whether they pay or not. I have always HATED down payments but im forced to collect a minimum of 1/3 down or I won't touch it...

Nice to see a contractor care about the neighbours and address the impact they have on others day to day activities. Here I thought they really didn't give a shit about others, nice professional job site management well done guys! As for the dirt deal you are bang on, run fast and run far my friend. I'm amazed how people think its ok to sling personal insults like "you are a thief". The manner in which I was raised makes this a very serious accusation and strikes at the moral fabric of who I am as a person. Can't do business with someone after that.

Moving on right strategy and your handshake and word are your bound. Learned that from my grandfather and dad; still applies today. I walked way from similar situations. Go pick up your Volvo pay him and your done. Interesting he still wanted you to buy the dirt, amazing. Maybe you needed to play in the road while escorting her home. It shows you can't can't make crazy up.

I made a deal to buy real nice gravel ( great packing with 3 inch minus stone all through it ) so I had to fix the road in 1100 feet of clearing brush putting new gravel ( his )over all of it and the deal is I could take half of my hours used in making the road back in loads of gravel ...handshake , I was able to get 6 loads out of the pit before he showed up and said he just sold the pit to his neighbors and I had to leave ..lesson learned 30 hours 3 pieces of equipment. I went down three lots and bought my own pit with the same gravel type . It used to be a handshake deal was as good as any paper deal .
