Are you afraid of cold calls? Do you love cold calls? Either way, you can improve your in-class performance. The Socratic method is the bane of many students' lives. Being on the hot seat can be nerve wracking. But did you know that there are only two types of questions that your professor is likely to ask? Knowing that can help your prepare for class and get the most out of your classroom experience. FIGHT BACK AGAINST YOUR PROFESSOR!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Get our Ultimate Guide to Cases & Briefs (FREE) here: legaleagleprep... You’ll learn how to read cases in five minutes and summarize them in 3 lines. It will change the way you read your casebook . . .
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Also, be sure to use our Flipped Case Method. The trick is to read the supplements and commercial outlines first. Read several of them. Then, once you have an idea of what is important about the case, and only then, read the text of the case itself. This “Flipped Case Method” will save you hours of time and make you far more prepared for class discussion. Learn more in our video: • Keep Up With Your Case...

I went to an eighth tier law-school. I loved it and had a wonderful time, but our contracts professor would assign out cases for the next class. There really wasn't cold calling, but about every three or four classes, one had to present a case. When I was assigned my first case to present, I went nuts. I read the case. I looked up the case in the actual court and downloaded the briefs from both attorneys. I interviewed the attorneys (even paid $700 for two hours of time to one of the lawyers). I called and spoke with the plaintiff and defendant (who had died, but I spoke with his son) at length. The case involved a bad remodel on the plaintiff's house and he invited me there. I toured his house and saw the issues first hand. When I got to class, I knew more about that case than the lawyers themselves. I even had pictures and transcribed interviews. I had a ball finding out every detail. The professor never assigned me another case again, however many times I should have come up in rotation.

While you wanted more time to shine, it sounds like your Prof. decided that you got the chops he was ultimately trying to teach the rest of the students. Good on you.

The Socratic method isn't so much about teaching the material; it's about teaching students to function under pressure. It flat out sucks being called on by the professor, especially when you missed reading that particular case, but it does give you very valuable practice thinking on your feet. That is ultimately more important than learning info that you're already supposed to know by the time you get to class.

So... I guess my strategy for getting through nursing school (undergrad and graduate) wouldn't really apply here. When I didn't have enough time to get all the reading and prep done for a class, I made sure I had the material at the top of the reading list down cold. Then, when class started, I would be the first one in the pit with my answers and contributions to the discussion. When I started getting to the limits of my preparation, the professor usually stoped calling on me so "others would be able to contribute." 😁

Best video on cold calls ever, thank you so much! I love it that you point out to us that cold calls don't matter at all BUT also tell us how to do well, because some of us still care at least a little about performing well in front of classmates :)

You are awesome for doing this! I have been blocking and doubting myself because I didn't feel prepared or I didn't feel like I had a realistic perspective of what getting educated to become a lawyer could be but your videos have helped reduce that stress and get rid of some of that blockage. Thank you for posting these videos.

I HATE the Socratic method. HATE IT! And yes, I do most of this. It helps to know how to brief a case, and how to give a proper summary.

Getting into law school is all about lsat even more so than UG gpa. Right now, yo need a min of around 152 or so to get in somewhere. The higher above 160, the more scholarship money you will get and of course more acceptances.

In most law schools, your grade is based 100 percent on your final exam. If you focus on "cold calls" instead of the only thing you're being graded on, you're not going to do well. Also, if you try to "ace cold calls" and be a "gunner" you will annoy the heck out of your classmates, and look like a complete fool after grades are released.

Cody Tesch law school is considered a graduate degree, meaning you must obtain a bachelors degree first. You can go to a community college for two years then transfer to a university, or go straight to a university and obtain a bachelors in any field of study. After your 4 year degree is complete, or your senior year, you can start applying to law school. Hope this helps

ME: The student who seems like a gunner because I always volunteer to discuss a case from the reading early, when I'm really just using a paraphrased canned brief and volunteering early so I'm not cold called later.

Lol, no prof ever will pick you if youre not asking to answer. Not in germany. 400 people in one class. Just monologue from the prof. And if, in case of socratic method just say at the first question i dont know. Why the stress? who cares what others think, no one will remeber next month. lol
