I LOVE the way Ace teaches!! It's like I'm learning from a friend! Not a snobby bone in his body! Just one of the many things that make him one of the BEST!! Thank YOU ACE!!
His tone hasn't changed in 45 years. He's not the best guitarist, but by far the coolest. Who else could come up with a smoking guitar that flys away? Love you Spaceman!
Ace is better than Clapton any day. Better showman better guitarist way better at great rememberable riffs. How many Clapton riffs will stand the test of time?
Agreed his laff is infectious lol ii recently saw him on a talk show from the 70s his laff hasn't changed . Plus he comes off as a normal guy back then too like he was just happy to be there.
Hell yeah! I used to pretend I was The Spaceman when I was a kid in the '70's whilst watering the front lawn. The garden hose was my axe, and I'd stick my thumb in the open end and pretend that the water spray was sparks, just like from Ace's axe.
Ace is the reason I started playing guitar in 1980 and by 1987 I was in a band called Blitzkrieg, who are still playing today. I don't care what Gene or Paul say about Ace, they wouldn't commit their time to teaching like this. Ace's songwriting and playing will continue to influence generations of guitar players for years to come. LEGEND.
Just look at the other egos in the band. This man is KISS for me. When I watch the old live performances (I hadn't been born yet) I can't stop watching him. I find myself thinking get the fuck out of the way Paul, you're blocking the view of Ace. Gene over there tongue punching everything in sight.
The thing I like about how he teaches is that he has clear view of his fretting hand and also tells you the actual chord. So he expects people to have basic understanding of chords.
Ace is why I ever picked up the guitar in the first place. I have a 1978 Gibson Les Paul Custom because I wanted to be like Ace when I was a teen. I still have that guitar and I still play.
Ace inspired me, i found guitar too hard, so i played drums instead but learned guitar later. He's like Chuck berry and hendrix and the who and the ramones in one
I also learned to play because of Ace and I too have a 1978 Gibson Les Paul Custom I shit you not. Mine is in wine red. How about yours? They sure have gone up in value lately haven't they?
@@bigmacfullerton7870 mine was a black beauty when I bought it new. I then changed all the plastic parts to cream and my speed knobs to gold to look like Aces. Later on I found the pearloid tuners so I have that going on too. I still have it.
Such a shame that we have people cutting down a man who is literally responsible for many successful guitarist today. Ace is a legend. He is not only a great guitarist, but was part of what was the biggest Rock Band in the world. Ace -- IS A LEGEND! Now this being said, those of you who criticize his playing ability or try and compare his playing ability to others have not fully developed your skills enough to understand that it is NOT-- how fast you play -- its WHAT you play that counts. Ace isnt trying to be like anyone else --THEY ARE TRYING TO BE LIKE HIM!!. Kiss gave life -a soul- to every song they played. This is why their songs will never die. This is what separates the true artist from those who will will never be. So remember this the next time before you cut down a true Rock legends playing ability.
Wow .... Look, I'm not going to rag on Ace or any of them. I will give you a bit of grief, though, for referring to Kiss and the phrase "true artist" in the same sentence. I think even Gene would call BS on that one, seeing as how he's admitted that the band was basically just a money-making business venture that targeted young boys for its audience.
Favorite guitarist ever. Obviously he's written some of the most memorable riffs ever, and he plays them so relaxed and easy. I have no idea if the Shock Me guitar solo is the world's most difficult or impressive.... but it's my favorite guitar solo EVER!
Nothing special about the notes, but Ace's timing is uncommon and tricky to cover. And I agree... I enjoy no one's playing more than Ace's. Virtuosity makes for really boring music most of the time... Randy Rhoads is the exception :) ... who, btw, ripped off Ace's guitar solo, probably without realizing it.
Past band members can portray him as a spaced out ignorant drunk, but he really knows what he is talking about here. I didn't expect him to be able explain the minutiae, but he does great, and touches on things that most people wouldn't ever notice. I started playing guitar fifteen years ago because of him. I learned how to play by spinning my Dad's KISS alive album. Awesome lesson!
Yes but the young bastards today, will never know the feeling of paying 50bucks for 100 song just to get 2 somewhat close cords for the 2 songs you had already taped off the radio and needed to get maped in. After walking 2 miles up snow covered hills to the shop and 7 miles back home thru the dessert. LoL All the memories. We can laugh now... The money is gone and I just got a personal lesson from Ace Freely all to myself. How cool is this!
Ace man I love all the bends and crazy stuff you do jts awesome. You just don't have anyone out there doing the stuff you do, that's definitely your trademark on rock n roll. And now I'll sum it all up Ace you are badass . I'm loving it and thanks for this lesson you taught me a lot . I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks,I'm almost 60 now and your playing never gets old. Thanks for the lifetime of great rock n roll Ace you are the man.
I was born in 1963 and have been a KISS fan since the first time I heard them. Despite their business dealings, personality clashes or anything else I still like the original lineup of Paul, Peter, Ace and Gene. Those guys have always sounded great together. I lived in Colorado from 1984 to 2012 and got to see them in concert twice. The second time was during their first farewell tour at their Denver stop. My mother had got on the Ticketmaster website and tried steady for about an hour and a half to get a ticket for me. She finally got one for me, I was on the ice hockey rink at Pepsi Center about halfway back from the stage. So when they start playing Love Gun Paul gets on a steel cable zipline, cruises along it and stops at a satellite stage nust down from where I was sitting. He was so close I could see scratches on his guitar and sweat on his face. At one point they had confetti falling from the ceiling and I got some that I still have in a plastic bag.
Imagine my disappointment when we went to see Kiss on Creatures Of The Night tour without knowing if Ace was gonna be there. They lied in the press and said Ace was in a car wreck but he was actually replaced and Vinnie Vincent comes out and the concert was 50 percent ruined.
razorjules - I was watching that show and cracked up when he said that! Funny as hell, those were the days. It's cool watching Ace run through one of his tunes, I always thought his lead parts sounded so cool. As others have mentioned, Ace wasn't the most technical player but he simply nailed it, case closed! KISS replaced Ace with a million guys over the decades but their original 70's stuff by Ace is what everyone wants to hear... Great lead trout player for sure! Rock on Space Ace!
I agree. Ace's playing had so much character, just like the man himself. All the guys that came after him, in Kiss, sounded so sterile to my ears. When you listen to that final Ace cadenza on "Rocket Ride" from Alive II, with that final vibrato note, it kind of defines 1977. I immediately think: THAT is the KISS guitar sound.
God bless you Ace ... You just made or gave someone the push/help to be the future in the music field .... As you have heard a million times you are the best and filled my young life with joy and love for music !
Fantastic video Ace - I was in the front row at Lakeland in '76 when that happened. Some scary moments but when you came back out on stage you were fantastic! Great song.
I think this guy is the best one in the whole band. He cracks me up and his laugh just makes me bust out laughing. It would be so cool to just hang out with Ace and listen to his stories.
What a down to earth brotha. Exactly what has already been said. Its like a friend showing you a new song. Stay true Ace! You are the real deal my friend!
simply one of the greatest rock and roll guitarists of all time. style style style and personality to burn. takes like 2 notes to recognize its HIM! great vibrato, great sense of solo composition, the shit almost always fits the song perfectly and just sounds fucking cool
artman33167 give me a soloist with melody and feel any day over the shredder. Ace's solo on "100,000 Years" is one of the great rock and roll musical statements.
Ace is a true inspiration. he himself has stated he can't play and is musically illiterate, as he put it, but still made it. damn Ace, I'd say Shock Me, but you already have. you can call him a terrible player but Ace is what keeps young guys like me from putting the axe down
I also turned my buddies on to Kiss and "Shock Me" with huge house speakers in the back of my van, while driving through town, blasting this song full on, blowing weed, pounding beers, head banging hard, steering the van with my knee. Hey was the seventies, was a serious party time. Oh yeah!!
Did you know this fun factoid: Boston and KISS are related through their association with Eddie Kramer in the '70's. Kramer was originally supposed to produce Boston's debut LP, but, the demos were so good that he decided that his skills wouldn't have been needed, so, he went to produce KISS instead.
This is great! ACE is the man. Probably not the most technically gifted or talented but damn he pulls it off! Just a great raw sound and I've always liked how he bends those notes and the overall tone of his sound. Rock legend!! ⚡️Thanks for posting
@@SJF98 time is on our side. Ace isn’t Vai or Satriani. Ace is Ace and oh shit cakes does that work for me! My 20 year old son loves Ace #DadWellPlayed
"I will get a lazy person to do a hard job because he will find the easiest way to do it" - Bill Gates. Ace Frehley admitted that he is lazy, and doesn't have any discipline. But guess what? He done his job, and no matter how he did it, he nailed it. And is still nailing it. Just think about all the haters, they have a butthurt because they think they are better than him because they have better technique, and yet they still broke and never played a real concert. Go figure.
YTOnceAgain This is not pop music. Your argument is invalid. He holds his own in his style, he might not be virtuoso, but he clearly can play shit out of that fucking guitar. And also do some nice vocals. He fucking rocks. Period. Go figure.
Ace had something that guys with more technique don't. He has musicality. Almost ALL of his solo are memorable. They get stuck in your head. That's a real musician.
Love you Ace! You rocked my childhood. I had every KISS card because I skipped school lunch to buy KISS cards from the neighborhood ice cream truck. Thanks for the great 🎵!!
Really great guy and thank you for sharing that story with us! Rock on Ace you're the best! I'm sure glad that I lived in the time when these guys were rockin! When they get into your heart and soul it's hard to imagine these guys not being around anymore playing together anymore. I still listen to their live stuff and imagine myself when I was a 12-year-old boy back watching that concert for the first time. I was in awe at the spectacle! I don't think the experience will ever leave me. 😊 🎸⚡⚡
There are too many great Kiss songs to count....but I swear, when I hear this song, I am the happiest person on the planet. Seriously! Thank you, Ace , for such a perfect, kick ass song. Every time I hear it, it makes me feel better!!!
I love how he has mastered his tone. As he is playing in the video, I can hear Kiss Alive II playing in my head because it is the exact same tone as he had 40 years ago! Same crisp picking, yet not too bright to bust your ear drums. There is a skill to building the right sound that is a talent apart from the mechanics of playing. He is consistent every time you hear him play. Keep on rockin', Ace! You still have fans that were in their teens when you were making these songs that love to hear you comment about them today.
I love the purple nails. Who hasn't been devastated by the perfect simplicity Ace Frehley's unique style of rock n roll? Frankly makes you feel proud to be living in the same century. Hooray for Ace.
@@paulstanley8420 Looking forward to the drive down to South Wales from Londonium to see (hear) ACE FREHLEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's going to be the best day ever!
Hell yea!! Ace is one hell of a guy to give a lesson like this. How many other guitar gods do you see doing this? Not many. As a kid in the 70s he was my first guitar hero and I still to this day love his live solo from alive II of this song. I think it's one if the greatest solos of all time. Ace Freley needs a shock!! Shock me!!!
Good grief!! I cannot believe...its been 42 years since my first Kiss concert. Yeah, now I'm dating myself. I was at one of the famous shows...the May 15th 1975 show in Detroit at Cobo Hall (Arena). Part of the recordings from the original Alive album...were recorded at that show. Its also famous for the back album cover photo with the two guys holding up the Kiss sign on main floor. That photo was taken at that Cobo Hall show too.
That "dinosaur" low E bend he does on the Calling Dr Love solo.. OMG it sounds so HUGE and creepy! You can hear them same bends on God of Thunder too! (and probably other songs as well..) I'm not sure I've ever heard so many great solos done with such groove, taste, style, and simplicity. What a Master!
I agree! In fact, The Dr. Love solo is my number two favorite solo after Strange Ways. It's indescribable, Wicked. Especially coming over an AM radio station!
Loved this guy.. watching him play live or video productions... in the old videos is so memorable and so Ace...definitely best KISS member and everyone loves him.
it is a pleasure to be able to watch and listen to a true legend sit down and show you how he played one of his most famous songs. he is such a real awesome nice guy to take time out of his busy day to explain how to play just like he does. thank you very much ace. you are the coolest.
ACE, if you read this... From the bottom of my heart, Thank You. You've inspired me (and countless others), in so many ways. Your guitar work is epic. There's so much raw melodic energy in your style, you are untouched. Cheers!
One of the men responsible for me picking up the guitar at 13!!!! He's the reason I had Guitar Center have me a classic Les Paul built at the custom shop!!!! I actually met him in a sub shop across from a club he was playing in, in Waterville Maine waaaaaaay back in the day. Bless you Ace, you're one of the greats.
Ace is very honest about his skillset which is so cool. He's not a speed shredder but definitely a solid pro player. Im a fan of his playing style because it's all crunchy 70s rock and roll.
Paul was a helluva singer ... but ace was the one that reminded them that you shouldnt get too full of yourself .... I love him for that reason alone 👍👍
@@derekbooth1769 - Hahahaha. Ace was mediocre, at best. He was the weakest player of all the guys who played lead for KISS! I've been playing guitar for 25 years, and I like Ace...but he was NOT a strong player. Who WAS the best playing lead?? Bruce Kulick...no question! But, I liked KISS because of the Demon Gene Simmons!
I'm not a Kiss fan by any means (Gene saw to that) but always thought Ace was a damn good guitarist and never got the acclaim he deserved. To have him give you a free guitar lesson online....Platinum!
I totally agree with you on everything! I'm no guitarist (drummer) but I sometimes feel the need to pick up my bro's guitar and I try to play them Ace licks!....
