Formed in 1990, by 2002, they had sold a total of 30 million copies of their first four studio albums, making them the third most successful Swedish group of all time, behind ABBA and Roxette.
"Don't turn around" is another great song of Ace of Base, along with "Beautiful Life" and "All that she wants" Another group you might like to check out is ATC (A Touch of Class). To me, they were like the early 2000's version of Ace of Base... That's just me, tho. Their song "Around the World" is straight up 🔥! Just a recommendation for y'all.
This is an iconic 90s song. It wasn't/isn't really within the scope of my taste in music, but it's fun and relatively harmless, and you can't consider yourself knowledgeable about 90s music without being familiar with this song.
Ace of Base is a Swedish pop group, formed in 1990, originally consisting of siblings Jonas, Linn and Jenny Berggren, with Ulf Ekberg. They achieved worldwide success following the release of their debut album Happy Nation in 1992. Later re-issued as The Sign, it was certified nine times platinum in the United States[6] and was the best-selling album of 1994. One of the most successful debut albums of all time, it was the first to produce three No. 1 singles on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart: "All That She Wants", "The Sign" and "Don't Turn Around". They continued to score hit singles throughout the 1990s, with songs such as "Beautiful Life", "Lucky Love", "Cruel Summer" and "Life Is a Flower". By 2002, they had sold a total of 30 million copies of their first four studio albums, making them the third most successful Swedish group of all time, behind ABBA and Roxette. Despite being largely inactive since 2012, the group has never officially disbanded. In the last decade, they have released a number of demo tracks, first via their Facebook page, then in 2015 on the compilation album Hidden Gems. An expanded two-disc edition was included in the 2020 boxset All That She Wants: The Classic Collection. Jenny Berggren continues to perform the group's hits in solo concerts around the world.
They had almost a half dozen songs, a few of which were living off the fumes of the better ones. I don't know about "ruling" but there were definitely out there for a few years.
@@cobbler88dang, I was gonna say the same thing. I don't know about "rule", but they definitely made great music. Definitely was not as much of a hit than I thought they should've been
They were kind of billed as the 90s ABBA at the time. You can see why ... they did some decent songs but never quite lived up to ABBA of course. But then again, who could?
For female Fridays you should check out The Corrs. They're an Irish family band made up of one guy and his three younger sisters. The youngest, Andrea Corr is the lead singer. They had some really good songs like "breathless", "Runaway", "Irresistible", "What Can I Do", "Would You Be Happier". But if you really want to hear something different, check out them performing "Toss The Feathers", it's traditional Irish music.
Definitely remember this from the early 90s but also a resurrection in the movie pitch perfect. It was the song that the bellas sang at every competition over and over and over again 🤣🤣🤣
When they were a hit in the 90's, they were always referred as the new ABBA (both Swedish) just like the Oasis as the new Beattles (both British). I listen to both group during my teenage years.
The girl in this video has such a good understanding of music. I'm sort of half in love with her because of her intellect and that she is kind of pretty.
Early-mid 90's European club music. It's my guilty pleasure. More from this era worth checking out: Whigfield - Saturday Night SNAP! - Rhythm Is A Dancer Corona - The Rhythm Of The Night, I Don't Wanna Be A Star Gala - Freed From Desire Alexia - Summer Is Crazy Interactive - Forever Young Blumchen - Herz an Herz Real McCoy - Run Away, Another Night Nina - The Reason Is You
It can’t be understated how big Ace of Base was in the early 90s. They were billed as “The modern day ABBA,” and they were inescapable. When I was in 3rd grade, I formed a fan club for them that met at recess. All we did was take turns reading the lyrics from the cassette sleeve. Lol
Hey, i've been listining to 'Don't Turn Around' lately, reminescing, & i thought it would be the perfect 'ace of base' song to cover! this is my fave song by them. the vid's good! it has that hypnotizing melodics this band always produced & these really 'wavy' synthesizer effects! i hope u love this song. . .
Thus is such a great catchy song. I loved it when it was first released in 1992. I was 28years old, and going down to the disco on a Wednesday night 🌙. It was packed to the rafters. The atmosphere was electric. Oh I do miss those days.
My niece came to live with us for a bit and she had this cassette tape. I fell in love with it and blasted it every time I cleaned my room and matched my voice to hers.. stunned my mom that I knew how to sing! 😁
Can't believe this song is almost 30 years old!! Probably the most successful female-led band to come out of Sweden this side of ABBA. The singers names were Jenny and Linn Berggren, who were sisters. Their brother, Jonas, was also in the band. The fourth member was Ulf Ekberg. "Happy Nation" and "The Sign" were two of the biggest albums of 1992-93, and they spawned a ton of hits - "All That She Wants" was their breakout hit, and should be your next one. They also had "Don't Turn Around", "Beautiful Life", "Living in Danger", and "Lucky Love". They also did a cover of Bananarama's awesome 80's song "Cruel Summer". You should do BOTH versions of that one!
Ace of Base was from Sweden and had Abba's configuration - pop group w/ 2 girls, 2 guys... The girls and 1 guy were siblings (Linn & Jenny Berggren, Jonas Berggren) w/ Ulf Ekberg. Ace of Base was huge between 1992 to 1994, their first album 'The Sign' sported a few hits - "Don't turn around" ... 'Happy nation' ... 'All that she wants' ... 'Living in danger'. 2nd album 'The Bridge' in 1995 did OK w/ singles 'Beautiful life' ... 'Lucky love' ... "Never gonna say I'm sorry". Ace of Base diminished in popularity in 1998 w/ their 3rd album 'Cruel summer'... The group parted ways after 2000.
I remember this from 1993/94. I was in the navy and stationed in Japan at the time. What a great era and a great place to be. Whenever I think of Japan I think of being in the clubs with this type of music playing. Also check out Saturday Night by Whigfield and Run Away by Real McCoy.
ABBA was more europop, Ace of Base was more dance pop or pop dance. ABBA had members who played instruments, I don't believe any Ace of Base members played anything, aside from maybe keyboards or synths.
Bobby, ABBA wasn't like disco. They had members play guitar and piano. Yeah it may have had a dance beat, but it was different from disco. Ace of Base you could hear the dance influence more than ABBA did 15-20 years prior.
@@matthewdrake4385 Plenty of bands that played instruments still made Disco. Disco is not defined by electronic instrumentation. Rolling Stones, Blondie, ABBA, all bands that played instruments, Disco was everywhere at one time, and most of the bands were actual musicians. Your assumption is incorrect.
Xmen 97 and "Happy Nation" has made them relevant again. Music is timeless and new generations discovering their amazing music. Ravine, happy nation, beautiful life are my favourite songs from them
I did my military service in the fall of -92 and spring of -93, and all the local radio stations would play during spring was Ace of Base - All that she wants, over and over again. Occasionally they would throw in a bit of Tasmin Archer - Sleeping Satellite, but not much else. The Sign was maybe released a year later or so.
THE SIGN/Ace Of Base was a mega monster hit. It charted at #1 (Billboard Hot 100) for 6 weeks in 1994. They are from Gothenburg, Sweden. The girls are Jenny and Linn Berggren. They are sisters and one of the keyboard players, Jonas Berggren, is their brother. The other keyboard player is Ulf Ekberg. Also do reactions to these hits of theirs: ALL THAT SHE WANTS/Ace Of Base. This song charted at #2 (Billboard Hot 100) in 1993. DON'T TURN AROUND/Ace Of Base. This song charted at #4 (Billboard Hot 100) in 1994. LIVING IN DANGER/Ace Of Base. This song charted at #20 (Billboard Hot 100) in 1994. BEAUTIFUL LIFE/Ace Of Base. This song charted at #15 (Billboard Hot 100) in 1995. LUCKY LOVE/Ace Of Base. This song charted at #30 (Billboard Hot 100) in 1996. Enjoy.
Give Clannad a listen-Harry’s Theme-Siblings to Enya, which is also someone you should listen to. A lot of their songs were/are used in commercials and movies-from Volkswagen, “Last of the Mohicans”, to “Lord of the Rings”-awesome beautiful voices and harmonies. You won’t regret it if you like being taken to somewhere else.
Yes, do Enya. She's unlike anyone you've reacted to. Great for Female Fridays. Try "Orinicco Flow". She's the second best selling Irish act behind U2, which you should also react to. There are only one of the greatest rock bands ever. They are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Start with "Pride (In the Name of Love)"
They had a few great songs I love including all that she wants, don't turn around, beautiful life, never gonna say I'm sorry, cruel summer ( a cover of the group bananarama) and lucky love.
Ace of Base was a Swedish Pop group that reminded us all of ABBA. But they disappeared & stopped making music. I'm not sure if they're making any new music here lately. They all have strong Swedish accents & they had very popular music.
Omg! I love your clueless tshirt! This group was 90’s and this song was early 90’s. I loved don’t turn around, all that she wants, living in danger and it’s a beautiful life.
Ah, a song from my Generation. Love Ace of Base. Beautiful Life is one of my favourite songs. Great review 👏 Would love to see your reaction to these, so please review if you haven't already more 90s/00s Brit/Euro songs - Whigfield - Saturday Night Betty Boo - Doin the Do 2 Unlimited - Get Ready for This Tasmin Archer - Sleeping Satellite SL2 - On a Ragga Trip Stone Roses - Made of Stone Desree - Life Happy Mondays - Kinky Afro Texas - In Demand Scooter - Jumping All Over The World Primal Scream - Come Together
It was an international hit, topping the charts in eight countries, including the US for six weeks, and reaching the top 5 in several more. It was later nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance By a Group or Duo in 1995.
my jam when i was little girl and spice girls. I'm 35 yrs old. I had vhs with this music video on it lol and spice girls vhs movie too. i love your shirt amber
And I always loved the little hitch in her voice in second stanza when she says "joy". It always made me think of someone trying to convince themselves that they had joy, but their voice belied the falsehood in their words.
There's a couple of 80s songs you've got to hear - "Kiss You (When It's Dangerous)" by Eight Seconds and "Send Me An Angel" by Real Life". Also "Moonlight Desires" by Gowan.
I love Send Me An Angel! Somehow I didn't discover that song until a few years ago (even though I was an 80s kid), and I was shocked it wasn't a more recent song because it sounded so ahead of its time. They sounded a lot like Placebo (who I love) to me.
This was a great traveling song. This played when I was driving past Washington, DC, lol. Another underrated singer from the same period is Basia...try one of her songs....Time And Tide, New Day For You. No one is reacting to her that I have seen. ;)
This is a 90's group and song. I remember hearing it on the radio all the time. Now that we are in the 90's how about reaction to one of the boy bands of that decade. You should listen to The Backstreet Boys and their mega hit I Want It That Way. I was in my forties when the song came out and I absolutely love it.
My very favorite Ace of Base song! There are other really good ones out there too! The women have beautiful voices, and I think you both liked it too! ♥️The old white woman
What makes Ace of Base unique is that their songs make use of a syncopated sound (that is the heavy beat you sometimes hear in a lot of Reggae music). Their sound is a quirky combination of modern pop, dance, reggae beats and other contemporary styles. It's fascinating to listen to.
LOVE this song. It reminds me of the summer of 1995 in college. Definitely the best Swedish pop up there with ABBA…you’re right about the congas…that part of the chorus almost sounded like “The Tide is High” by Blondie…another cool song you gotta react to 👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
The hand percussion instrument is a very ancient type of drum typically used in music from the Middle East ( Egypt , up through and into what was once mesopotamia) called a Djoumbek. I have 2 of them. It's basically a hollow tube that flares out at the top with the drumhead stretched across it really tight. Like stupid tight ! That's why even though it's a hand percussion it almost has a metallic quality to the sound. Like I said I have 2 , one is 10 inches tall x 10 inch circumference. The big one is same type of measurement but the magic number is 13.
One of my favorite waitresses LOVED this group. If I saw her at a club we had to dance to any of Ace of Base’s songs. And they had 3-4 out that were very popular. They always reminded me of ABBA but I didn’t realize until reading one of the comments that they were also a Swedish band.
Hi Rob Squad! I wanted to thank you for doing a reaction to the song that I requested, that unfortunately got blocked. I appreciate your effort. THANK YOU! Have a beautastic weekend! (that’s a combo of beautiful and fantastic)
Hi Jay & Amber!! Thank you for another awesome reaction and video...This group has a few more songs worth checking out, All That She Wants, Beautiful Life and Don't Turn Around. Happy exploring!! 🙂🙂🙂
My last year of middle school. I was 12 going on 13 when this came out. Going out with the beautiful gemma overton. Wonder what ever happened to her.🤔 Great memories from those times.
not 80's. Was the 90's. They were flaming hot in their time!!! Loved loved them!! I was a female just startin to goin to clubs to dance. Perfect timing for me when they came to be. Went to club in Buffalo when I was 18 because it was legal then and continued clubbing till my mid 20's. Got married at 24 so stopped that whole scene. I was a club hopper!! Went to ALL the clubs because I loved to dance!!
Ace of Base's music was produced by Dennis Pop who was a pioneer in Swedish produced pop music in the 90s which led into his disciple Max Martin who produced acts like Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, NSync etc. etc. etc. Ace of Base can be seen like an early version of that production sound and style.
After 1992, when the 80's sound ended, and everything was Grunge and bad rap, I had gotten an 8 CD of 80s songs and hit the used CD stores to gather a massive 80s library! When I heard ACE of BASE, it was a nice release from all that dark stuff that was in rotation on radio and TV, and their hits only got better and helped usher in the POP of the later 90s, with INSYNC, Hansen, Backstreet Boys, Pink, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, etc and so music became brighter again, and Clueless came out theaters bringing back some of the Preppy Culture of the 80s back into the 90s. Also, for ACE OF BASE coming out of Sweden, it reminded me a lot of ABBA from the 70s!
