The Aspire 7 is a professional looking laptop from Acer, but it’s still got some nice hardware too making it great for gaming as we’ll see in the benchmarks. In this review I’ve also tested battery life, thermals, undervolting and more.

Hi. I bought this laptop last month, and I love it. The i7-7700HQ cpu and the GTX 1050 Ti is powerful enough to play modern games on medium-high settings in 1080p with 60 fps. For example Witcher 3 and Battlefield 1 runs smoothly on high settings in 1080p. The temperatures are 65-75 °C (CPU) and 65-70 °C (GPU) after hours of gaming (cpu is undervolted). The laptop had only one HDD (1TB) but I successfully upgraded it with an m.2 SSD (240GB). Just had to unscrew the entire bottom and open the case with a plastic tool, starting from the back. Overall I am satisfied with this laptop :)

I can play up to 2-3 hours without any overheating issue. ( I never play more than 3 hours in a row)

The one I had didn't have a touch screen. As for how long while playing it, during my temperature testing it was either gaming or running stress tests for 3 hours while I collected my data, temperatures seemed to stabilize within 30 minutes.

I thought to send him back and buy Lenovo, because I read so much badly on Acer Google after 1 or 2 years all broken I paid 1199 € I can't turn the keyboard on and off! @@robivde1 I've had the older model (A715-71G) for around 2.5years and it still works great. And have another Acer E5-571 from around 2014-2015 that also still works perfectly. In fact these are the 2 best laptops I've had, especially in terms of reliability (for consumer notebooks at least, thinkpads and latitudes are something else)

It's been 2 years since I bought this laptop, I enjoyed this 3-12 hrs a day and no temperature problems, although I can say the cons are where the battery is located which is in the bottom left where I rest my wrist, It gives me a short electric shock at the edge of the laptop but not a big deal just an ant bite, and also the screen is too dim and I think it could've been brighter like a lenovo y530 but all in all for the price and specs it's worth for the sacrifice of the display, I have intel i7 7700HQ with turbo boost from 2.8 to 3.8 ghz, 1 tb HDD, 8 gb ddr4 2133mhz (single stick, but I can upgrade it with double channel but I ain't got the money for it yet and wouldn't need too much ram atm), and I installed an additional Nvme 480 ssd where I installed windows and games in, and my work files on HDD, pretty much worth if u ask me 😎👌

Just love this laptop coz of its looks and what it packs under the hood. a very balanced laptop. a thunderbolt 3 and a better screen would be icing on the cake. btw thanks for reviewing it, ive been looking for a good review of this laptop for a while.

I've had this laptop for 5 years now, with an i7 8750H and 1050 4GB (non Ti). I upgraded the ram to 16 GB and bought an SSD for it. It's a really good laptop and has served me well. The battery life right now runs for about 2.5-3 hours, using ThrottleStop and brightness on 40% I bought a Legion 5 with a 5600H and 6600M two days ago and I'm waiting for it to be shipped. I'll miss this one.

Mine works perfect. It is the 16gb ram versión. I use Photoshop,Lightroom , play actual games at 1080 60 fps in high almost the cases. The unique con is the display. Good ,but poor rgb spectre (not Bad but ,just normal mid range) so for edition you must calibrate it the Best You can

It'd probably go fine, but for that task I'd look at the newer 8th gen model as the extra CPU cores really help out with video exporting.

Thanks! The new version of this may be good, haven't tested it so cannot say, the Lenovo Y540 is quite a good performer for the money and looks pretty professional compared to other gaming laptops out there.

Yeah those specs should be pretty good for that task, although I didn't test the 8750H in this body so can't really comment how the temperatures/performance will differ, but I'd expect it to be better.

Keyboard is all keys one colour only. That's about average for my battery test with the Witcher 3, 60 minutes is about average over all gaming laptops I've tested. It will if course last longer on less resource intensive games, but you still get less performance on battery anyway so usually not recommended unless absolutely necessary

Imagine this chassis has a 8750h+1060 6gb in it. Would this cooling solution keep it away from throttling after a repaste and undervolt? Or how hard would it fail? Thx for the answers. Good video.

I mean i don't really have the faith in a 2 shared heat pipe cooling with a 8750h+1060 but it has kinda a nice price now. idk. Other possible victim is the helios 300 but that one is just fugly.

Hard to say, I feel like the answer is no given no laptops I've tested so far even with bigger and better cooling solutions have been able to fully tame the 8750H (mostly due to power limitations), but that's in full multicore workloads, in most instances I'd expect better performance especially in single core, hopefully I can get the newer model for review and comparison in the future.

I bought the 7th gen i5 with 1050ti graphics with a 17 inch screen and SSD over black Friday 2017 for under 700 USD. I think the 17 inch (1080p) model is almost identical to the 15 inch in design. I get cpu thermal throttling under load. I do get random screen freezes that unfreeze when I unplug and replug the power plug.

If I had to choose between this laptop and a Dell G5 whith (almost) the same specs, what would you recommend? I'm a bit concerned about temperatures/construction and long term performance loss

Hmm overall I think personally I preferred the G5 between the two, assuming all else equal, as long as you can get backlit keyboard, as I mentioned in my G5 review the keyboard didn't have backlighting and it was quite annoying at times.

I bought this laptop 2 monthhs ago, so far i'm preety satisfied. 8300h with 1060. I have 17 inch version. The laptop is more silent than desktop, has very stable case, nice temperatures, meh IPS panel but very bright, i always use 50% brightness. I have stock 256 SSD, it has 1,5GB/s read speed so it isnt the cheapest one and thats nice. I dont know why but my GPU is much warmer than yours (i cutted CPU to 3,3GHZ and GPU to 1,650GHz, CPU undervolted 0,500V!!! and 0,125 cache and still can gain stable 3,9GHz if I unlock it) GPU runs like 75-80*C when CPU 67-75. And i had 1,911 GHz GPU stock (instead of 1,650GHz) and it was like 85-88*C. I dont know why but Afterburner and Rivia shows it like that. Temps are fine, but in your video are much better. And good to know i can have stock 1,911GHz GPU if i need better performance in future.

Coincidence I just got it today and downloading CSGO and WOW, wrote some of the specs above, will let you know how the games run, so far whilst watching RU-vid, downloading both CSGO and WOW, the laptop is snappy and cool. Build quality seems better than the one reviewed on the channel.

Hey Jarrod, I was thinking about buying either this model, the MSI GF Series 8SC-030 GF63 i5 8th gen with GTX 1650 8 GB , or the Acer Nitro 5 i5 8gb memory and a gtx 1050. I just want a laptop to handle fallout 4 pretty well. I’m not a pro with computer specs and I appreciate the feedback you give your subscribers when they have questions. Thanks!

I'd expect the 1650 to perform better, that said I have not tested out that specific config so its hard to talk in specifics. Otherwise same CPU and memory so overall just better performing GPU with the GF machine.

To be honest I can't remember off the top of my head, but the information can be found in my other videos on the FX505 and G5, however those ones all had the i7-8750H and not the cooler 8300H which may affect fan noise, so I can't really say without having tested those. From what I recall the G5 was quieter than most other laptops, though it does not have custom fan control like the FX505.

No I didn't, I don't personally see much of any change doing so in comparison to undervolting the CPU so usually don't bother with it

I have this laptop, and the CPU is hitting around 97 degrees celcius. It's undervolted -120mv. Do you have any idea how I can fix this? I feel like those temps are way too high.

Oyst1 yes. Send it to service and tell them to put expensive thermal paste, and to clean it from dust. If it has warranty send it back and tell them what is wrong with it. Thermal paste will do the job

Thank you for doing this video, I need one for photo and video editing, but it has to be really robust because of some of the software that I use so I usually pick gaming laptops, i guess this is not going to fit the bill any tips for the $1000 markUS?

No problem! Maybe the Dell G5, decent specs, although I'd probably want a better screen for photo editing, but I haven't personally tested too many at that price range with great screens and specs though.

I'd probably get the omen myself. I also personally prefer 15 inch, easier to take with you and can just use an external monitor at home but that's just me.

Cheers! Yeah you can, it has a 2.5" drive bay and you can get 2.5" SSDs, so you can install one there.

Planning to buy a budget gaming laptop and I found a deal for the Acer Nitro 5 for 566$(i5-7300H,256g SSD,1050ti 4gb,8gb ram)( refurbished). Is it worth getting this lap, or should I get the i5-8300H version for 700$? I'm open to other options as well. Thanks

Hmm Nitro 5 is meant to be good, haven't tested it myself yet, or any 7300HQ CPUs for that matter. I did recently compare the 7th gen i7-7700HQ with i5-8300H though, and found the i5 to be about 10% better in most tests, so it would also be a fair bit better than the 7300HQ, could be worthwhile considering you can't upgrade the CPU once you buy it so getting the best you can afford may make sense, I suppose depends whether $140 is worth the improved performance (not sure how much exactly that is over 7300HQ, as mentioned I've never had one for testing).

7300HQ is probably plenty then, I haven't looked at many in that price range, the ones I know of are the Nitro 5, Dell G3/G5, maybe some others like MSI GL63 or ASUS Vivobooks. I don't have any experienced buying refurbished, I guess it depends where you're buying from, as long as the place is reputable and has warranty it's probably fine.

i have been told that this laptop is powerful on paper and its weaker than laptops with the same hardware from other brands like asus or msi.is that true?with the budget i have this offers the best hardware possible and same hardware on other brands mentioned above is out of my budget.so my question is should i get this one or go for lower hardware but a better brand?it might sound stupid but im really confused and im not sure if in reality it can offer what its offering on paper...so enlighten me :D

Drivers for what? For Nvidia, you can update through GeForce experience, or download them from their website.

I have a Acer Aspire TC-230 and a AMD A6 7310 Apu but I decided to put a GeForce GTX 1650 Lowprofile inside the case (barely fit) it works fine but when I try to run a game the GPU will randomly crash locking my keyboard and mouse out with a blank screen (still connected to the graphics card because the monitor is connecting) everything is showing as a white hyphen in the top left middle mocks me. I have to directly remove power from the PSU to restart and turn on my PC again, thing is it only does this on slightly heavy loads such as graphics changes and resolution changes this happens in at least 5-10 minutes of gameplay or when a high amount of particles appear on the screen (lots for the CPU to load) it just crashes. I know I need a Apu upgrade but as far as I know I don't wanna buy a Ryzen 5 2600 and then it not fit any suggestions?

I think it would probably be decent, my concern is that is a hot CPU from all of the other laptops that I've tested, so not sure how it will hold up in the thinner body of this machine. I'm trying to get the newer version for review though, so hopefully I can cover it soon!

Also, how big of a problem would the hot CPU be? I don't know too much about how it would actually affect the laptop and whether or not there is any big risk (like the laptop malfunctioning or something idk).

While it might thermal throttle, performance would still be a fair bit better than the 7700HQ I think. Even if it gets hot, it would just throttle back as required, I don't think it would be a serious issue, and would only happen under heavy multicore load anyway.

I've never had a 7300HQ to test with so I honestly can't say, but I doubt the hyperthreading makes much of a difference, the 7300HQ still has 4 cores and good clock speed so I can't see it performing too much lower, especially when in most games the graphics card will make the bigger difference.

I'd expect them to perform similarly, do both have dual channel memory? That would make a big difference. The 1050 Ti is fine for moderate gaming, 1060 is a fair bit better but you probably won't need it. For video editing, with Adobe Premiere at least, the CPU is more important and both have the i7. Actually I've reviewed the GF63 here, and I think it has the 1050 Ti Max-Q so it's not quite as good as the standard Ti: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-S_mRp1c27FY.html

Just thought razer is a little better quality than "acer" laptops, and msi was just so expensive. all in all i think i will be happy with the razer 15...

Sounds fine. You could try undervolting to lower temperatures, or otherwise look into reapplying the paste or buying a cooling pad.

The 7th gen version in the video? For $1000 you can get a Helios 300 with 8750H and 1060 which will perform better than this. Depends what you're after though, personally I'm not a fan of the huge PREDATOR logo on the back and like look of the Aspire, especially for work as you mention.

Now Can this laptop handle it or shld I look for other laptop with better thermals? As u said on the video that the gpu & cpu shares the cooling fan I think playing more than an hour can make the system over heat. When I do all of my temperature testing I leave each test going for at least half an hour and I do them all together, with/without undervolting, stress test, gaming, etc, so all up I'm probably pushing it pretty hard for about 3 hours or so to get all the data I need, usually the temperatures stabilize within the span of 30 minutes, and from what I saw they weren't changing any further, so I don't think it will be an issue going for longer periods of time.
