Just installed the Kingston 2gb ram card using this video. Some people said in comments on another video that it didn't work, but it seems to work for me. Thank you for the help. I'm a 47 year old grandma who knows nothing about computer repair.

Thanks for the video! I needed to get the HD out of my dead netbook, to get old info off of it (via SATA HDD Enclosure). This helped me alot with just getting the darn thing open (no computer hardware experience whatsoever). Didnt know there were tabs by the keyboard that needed to be pressed in. :) Thanks again~

You can get a brand new keyboard for $10-$15 on eBay. As to the upgradeability of the RAM, they may say it's not upgradeable, but it can.

I broke the clip when I followed 2:25. Do not do what he did on this video. You don't need to push, you need to lift the clip on the keyboard holder. If you notice, he edited the video because he accidentally removed it, luckily his was not damaged. Mine was. Gladly it still holds the keyboard connector even if its broken.

I got mine off ebay and the one I got is "2GB DDR3-10600 1333MHz RAM SODIMM made by Elpida". You can get different brands and these notebook only has one memory slot, so you need to buy 1 stick of 2GB. If you want to check what your computer can use for memory, go to the website Crucial, and select the page Memory (RAM), then on the left side, use their Scanner Tool which will do a quick check on your computer and tell you what can be fitted.

I know that this video has been a while, but when you took the back panel off, did any tiny black fork like tabs come out of your netbook? I had 3 of those pop out of the netbook when I took the panel off!

I'm still running 14.04 at the moment, BUT I can't see why it wouldn't work on 16.04. You want to run Ubuntu, not Lubuntu, correct? I think with these little Acers a lightweight version of Ubuntu might be more appropriate.

@@syedsafiuddin1256 The mobo is limited to 2 gb. It does support SSD but I couldn't get the BIOS to recognize any of my Samsungs so I bought an inexpensive Crucial BX-something and so far that's been working without any hiccups.

I really wish that keyboard connector was the quick connect type, but it's not. I have worked on other Dell laptops where it had those quick release. but not for this D257.

_this_ D257 It's hardly likely there are different Aspire D257's Mine (yes, it's a D257) looks identical to that ones black connector bar and the bar pivots upward along its whole length. Cable in and out in seconds.

Hi, I would like to upgrade my ram. I read different thoughts about removing the keybord to lift the lid on the bottom. I tried to pull it, but it seem there is something locking. has Anyone successfull opened the lid without removing keybord?

Maybe the truth is in the middle. You must access via keyboard, but you don't need to remove the ribbon!

This netbook is at the perfect age for downgrading to Windows XP to make it a retro gaming PC that is very low power. And most of the drivers are supported still by XP.

Nice job man! Got a question: I own an Acer Aspire One D257, but the one with dual boot Android/Windows 7 Starter. You think I could upgrade the memory without any problem? And what about replacing the HDD with a SSD unit (2.5 inch unit, maximum 256 GB)? Is that doable?

The memory shouldn't be a problem. If you change the HDD to SSD, you would loose the recovery partition on the HDD, unless you have a way to make a recovery image to reinstall the OS.

I have a question. I have the same acer aspire one notebook. I just purchased a new ram for it, but there is one thing I could never solve. Every time I fully turn it on, it wants to update to a higher version of windows 7. The problem is that it will update and fail at it, then shut its self down and try again. That takes way too much time to get the thing at least turned on. Is there a way I could bring the specs up to update it? Or is there a way I can stop it from trying to update?

Have you try to use Rufus to prepare the usb drive with a proper windows 7? Also make you sure to use MBR on RUFUS, and Fat32

Jason Shaffer That is probably why he managed to unhook it completely, or break it. There are 4-5 types of connectors for flat cables that I know of and it is easy to know which one is it when you see it.

So I bought this in 2011 with windows 7 starter. Kind of slow but tolerable. Instead of shutting down sleep mode brought it back around for use faster. Sigh but then Windows conned me into an upgrade to Windows 10 with promises all would be fine. It's been too slow ever since. In a few weeks I'll be upgrading to 2 gigs of ram, max for this machine and a 240G SSD. If that disappoints it's _inux or OS-X. I remember seeing someone use it as a hackintosh back when.

but could you like instead of removing the keyboard, just flip it up a little, remove the screws, open the back and install the new memory then put everything back together, idk just wanna know because if your doing it yourself idk don't really see the need to remove the keyboard to install the memory unless I'm installing a new keyboard.

when buying any computer, laptop. netbook or note book always make sure that they are upgradeable ... if you get one that only carrys up to 2 GB .. thT is the only amount it will carry...

Does the computer work faster after memory upgrade? The only reason why i'm thinking of this modification are websites (ex. YT, CNN) which load very slowly :( I've got of course Acer D257. I have already turned off all visual additions (it looks like Windows 98 :P) and few system services :). I work on google chrome, which seems to be the fastest web browser. Thank You for your eventual help :)

The limitation is the processor which is very slow and adequate for Win 7. Adding memory does not help with the speed.

If it's running Windows 7 Starter, then no; it will see the other gig of ram, but won't use it (or unable to) due to the software limits. Apparently if you put in 4GB, it will only use 3 (?) or 2gb of it. Along with ram, upgrade the HDD to an SSD which is where the real improvements come from.

Thank you and very helpful, but this netbook performs very slow with Windows 7 pro, even with 2GB Ram and insteadt of upgrading to SSD i recommend buying a newer and faster on. Atom CPUs and W7 don't work well together.

I am very unhappy with this model. I also think it would need more than 1 gig of ram because todays internet and even simple apps make the win 7 create huge page files, so basically the computer constantly dumps and loads memory content from and to hdd. The performance of the Atom is incredibly low. It's nice and compact netbook, good for email and watching video, but that's about it.

***** It wouldn't help. The atom cpu in it is too slow for windows 7 and today's internet. Instead of trying to revamp this one, i'd probably rather just buy a new laptop in price level around €400 or under. This netbook costed around €350 a while ago, but its performance is not sufficient (and frankly, it wasn't even when it was new.) But the fact is, most of the slowness is caused by memory management and excessive memory dumps written to disk. So technically, 2gb and ssd drive could help. I usually use it for watching tv shows and movies when I'm away, because it's more convenient than watching video on tablet.
