Chances are, if you've been around the channel for a bit, you know I'm a fan of netbooks. Their miniscule footprint, coupled with the fun in seeing how many things you can get working on them, has always been one of my favorite challenges. I've built up quite a collection of them!
Today we look back at the Acer Aspire One. A replacement of the second netbook I ever owned, and the next logical step after the Asus EeePC. But how does it work in 2022? Let's find out!

I had that same blue one and it was so cool. For what it was, it could do everything, had ports, and was easy to carry around for work and doing presentations with a vga port. It had its place.

I legitimately used this thing in my senior year of high school. Installed music notation software on it and made a 4 part vocal jazz piece. I remember my mentor thinking I was crazy and her needing glasses to see each individual note. Good times. Also, Linux Mint works like a charm on here. Haven’t run into any unexpected hitches or anything. Even the webcam and mic work! I mostly use it for telegram when I want to get away from the craziness of my phone for a bit

I know quite a few people who used them throughout school! They were good at a lot of things. Will definitely try Mint in the future. Thanks for the suggestion!

Great video! I bought this netbook back in the day (still have it and it still runs great!) and I really loved it. Great form factor, and was quite useable. Had Office 2007 on it and Photoshop 7. Was great for doing print jobs at Kinkos, when you needed to do some quick changes/edit, could do them on the spot. Had a Wacom tablet that worked with it. Also supported DisplayLink, and could hook up different external monitors (such as the Mimo 7, so quite an interesting/portable dual monitor setup). Best of all, with Windows XP, it still supported NetMeeting, and with the built in webcam, you can do point to point videoconferencing (best for LAN setups due to lack of any security/encryption) without the need for a third-party server/connection. Lot's of great uses/memories!

I just fixed one of these that my sis used back in middle school. Its an 07 modle of the aspire one net book. The best thing acer did was take this model, and make it easier to repair. To get to almost everything, besides the ram stick i believe, i just undo a screw and pop the cover off. I have one running a different version of windows that wasnt half as good as the one in the video though. I hated it even as a kid. It was so slow. But its going to get modded and turned into a retro gaming station. Just wanted to give a little update after 2 weeks of using my xp aspireone. It is extremely capable compared to what i remember my windows 7 (starter) aspire one. I have a few games installed, most of which are low strain, but i have managed to make morrowind work and have played it a bit. Its running a solid 40fps on the little guy, with low graphics granted. I'll be adding and using this thing more in the future. Now im on to my windows 7 dumpster fire of a laptop.

I used to have a couple of these. I thought they were great but quickly became outdated. I don't remember what the actual problem was; I think it was impossible to update the browser or OS without major surgery which just wasn't worth the effort.

I have an Acer Aspire One ZG5 and I have managed to get the video and internet running pretty well using Linux Mint Xfce. The way to do that is to delete all the extra programs like printers, scanners, and word processing. try to remove all extras. I am just using it for watching movies or listening to music. What a shame that there is no way to get more Ram or 64-bit OS. So sad because it really is a little darling of a laptop. If there was a company that could upgrade these I think a lot of people would keep it going. The size and weight are just right. I normally watch movies or music videos whilst having a bath. what if someone could manufacture a motherboard that had a better processor and up Ram it. It is the same for the Asus EEE PC that was well ahead of its time and I still love the one I have.

I used to have the same model in blue colour. It was fun to use at the beginning but later it started to glitch a lot, so I got rid of it and got myself an used triple E pc 900ax model. It runs win XP and it's pretty useble even now in 2k24 :). My only complaint is the battery life of only 2 hours.

Fun to see this video! I actually found this in my closet, it was my Dad's and he passed away in 2016, so it's a bit sentimental to me. I'm in IT now, and I recently slapped Debian 11/Bullseye on it and it was fine (had some issues with wireless drivers, so I'll have to manually move those over). I'm also new tinkering with Linux , but it's going to be a little lab Linux box for me, just for command line stuff. Funny enough, I looked into upgrading this to 2GB and slapping in an SSD, and I was like "how much are these even?". Haha, upgrades about equal the cost of a working one off eBay😂. I'm also a gamer nerd, so it was cool to see it actually handle some games because my initial thought was "no way". I'll just save the games for the beast rig, as Linux + "that" might be too much of a headache to figure out than I'm willing to try.

Sorry that you came across yours under such sad circumstances. But I'm glad you can hold onto it in his memory. I do tend to put more money into upgrades than then units are worth... but it is fun to play with old hardware! Hope your Dad's continues to serve you well for years to come. And thank you for watching!

@@PNPRetro Thanks for the kind words! It's ok, time has passed, and that's how life goes. I totally agree with playing with old hardware though! It's kind of a fun way to relive a memory as well, while actually serving a purpose far beyond what my Dad would use it for (get malware on it, and I have to fix it 😂). Speaking of, I'm looking to put in an SSD which seems straight forward. However, not sure what model yours is, but mine is a D255e, which you actually take the *keyboard* off from the top, remove a flex cable, then can access the HDD and RAM stick (I saw that from another video, which is how yours popped up). I was hoping to up to this to 4GB RAM which I've heard here and there can possibly be done, but officially only can be 2GB? You might be more up on that than I am. I'll check out more of your videos, keep doing what you love!
@PNPRetro
@PNPRetro Год назад
Sorry for the delay in reply, I don't always get notifications for replies to replies. I know for my unit, the max is 1.5gb of ram, but later models had more support. That being said, all I could find online is the official message of 2gb as you say. But I've had lots of hardware that the manufacturer said one thing, and the community found out otherwise. So I'll keep poking and see if I can find definite proof.

Had the same one sitting ducks for many years in a shelf. I decided last year to try and fix it and after giving it to a friend, he managed to fix it and make it run on a linux software. I used it for some months then forgot about it until I saw your video. Unfortunately as I tried to boot it up, I noticed that even though it seems to boot, the screen stays completely blank. I think it's time to let it rest. It served me well😢

For a minute I thought that was the later revision EeePC like I have, but then you had to take it apart to get to anything! At least it has a real SATA port. The shiny blue EeePC has a proprietary SSD that looks like it is a mini-sata connection, but is definitely not. And performance is completely hindered by that SSD. Still, I love these netbooks. When they were released it was an exciting time for a broke kid such as myself who wanted a cheap laptop.

I felt the same way when they came out! I was so fascinated that they could make such a small device could be so functional. Every time I do one of these videos I have to remind myself to not just spend the entire night playing through the games I love.

Thanks in advance

The best use of old Acer netbooks is to use them as retro arcade systems. They are better than a Raspberry pi as you can get them cheap from FBMP. Usually the keyboards tell to break with age and the battery on >10 year old laptops are long dead, so no one wants them any more. I have cut up my two different Acer Ones in half and put them in an small arcade cabinet each. I've discarded the keyboard, battery and screen hinges. they run AdvanceMAME with a joystick encoder board, and they look small and neat, they are great for arcade games no newer than 1993. peace, Jonathan

My red Aspire One D257 came with a non glossy display. I bought it when it was new and it served me quite well until the beginning of the pandemic 2020, when I finally had to buy a newer laptop for Zoom to work properly. My machine came with the horrible MeLinux and I changed it after half a day to Ubuntu 12.04. For my needs it was perfect back then. With games I had a similar expirience. While fps games from the early 2000s worked fine, racing games were unplayable. Dosbox however worked (and works), for the most part, exellent. I upgraded the OS over the years up until Ubuntu 18.04 which slowed it down so significantly, that it became a real pain for everything. Even though I don't need it anymore, I still take care of it. New power supply, new battery, new keyboard, new display over the last decade. It served me very well over the years and I like the form factor of the machine. Today I run antiX linux 19 with xfce4 on it and that works pretty well. With SeaMonkey, a Firefox clone, it is still able to watch youtube videos in 720p, but I don't recommend it since it takes about 2 minutes or more to start the browser, go to youtube and load the video. But it's possible. I still use it every now and then as a typewriter, a pdf reader, to play some old dos games, or to watch some 720p videos from my movie collection. 1080p is really not needed on a display that small in my opinion and just drains too much system ressurces.

You should try something lime MyPal. It runs amazing well and offers full modern browser support. Another option for these machines is Linux Mint 19.3 XFCE. It's a modern OS still supported until 2023, and it runs surprisingly good on the machine. Another funny option is Windows 10 (yes it does work), although you have to tweak Windows 10 *heavily* to get it to even be usable on the machine, but it is possible. Also, UMPC Edition does limit you a lot as opposed to the default Home / Professional Editions of XP. Cool video! Let me know if you need any help with stuff like this. I actually have a mild obsession with Atom-based machines (currently at the time of this video I have 12...), including multiple Atom gaming PCs, so I've become quite familiar with optimizing games to run on such weak hardware (at the time of this video I'm currently playing Halo 4 from the MCC on an Atom 330 gaming PC I built on Windows 10).

@another3997 2 года назад
The first Intel Atom and i7 CPUs were released in 2008. They were at opposite extremes of performance and power usage. The i7 had a TDP of 130W compared to the Atom's 4W. The Atom was designed specifically for low power draw and low heat generation, at the expense of performance. Long battery life and minimal cooling are great for ultra small laptops, netbooks and tablets on the move. The i7 was completely the opposite... blistering performance, but lots of heat and much higher power draw, even in 'mobile' form. It's a case of priorities.

I used Acer Aspire One 751h 2GB, 160GB HDD, Z520 1.33Ghz in 2011 summer. High school life was waiting for me. I bought this (asked my dad of course lol) because I could not use my sister's laptop. It was too much personal for her and it was not like family computer. I bought this cuz I was the smallest in my class and I found this machine suit for me, for my fingers, school bag etc. When I bought this and went to car, waiting my parents coming back from bank, used it and found it soooooooo slow! I could not say anything to my dad because my sister, my dad warned me that "Look, it does not have DVD unit, it is small computer, like really 'small' in every aspect." and lemme tell you that my dad is not using any computer in his life. I knew DVD lifespan was going to end so I really did not care. When we came to home, I told my mom and she was like "I knew it, why you did not listen your sister and father?". WTH! We have tried to refund but of course it is rejected. It was display product by the way and nobody have bought this for a year. The only laptop I loved was this one because it was 11.6" not 10 inch and it was THIN. (Later on Ultrabooks came on with higher specs and higher price and I was sad.) Unfortunately I sacrificed N atom CPU for this big screen, slow netbook. I saw Asus EEE PC on the net and checked all wiki model list sites in 2010 but there was not chance to buy it. A month later, in different tech store, I saw HP DM-1 11.6" minibook and it had better CPU and GPU and it was like real semi-laptop thing. The look and the specs. Gosh I was SOOOOOOO SAD when I saw that! Anyway, I formatted PC to Windows 7 Starter, updated BIOS, it become better. This minibook thought me patient with it's speed and all Windows features, tweaks so I know them like my name right now. I was closing some services and all the other tweaks and it was giving me some speed. Some specific flash player version to run my DDTank, Transformice game smooth, not pepperflash etc. With HTML 5 coming, it become harder to watch RU-vid vids since HTML5 was using CPU like hell. But I really loved this netbook for any cost because this was my, FINALLY, first personal computer. I bought this so my sister could not take it from me but it did not change the fact, she took it from me for some months then gave it back. I have tried to use it for nostalgia and due of needing a second computer but CPU was bottlenecking the SSD that I put in. Right now, it sleeps on my right with in the bag forever. I won't sell it in any way, any cost. And I want to add something, In 2018-2019, I was looking for tea cup from Edwardian ages. I was walking in the backstreets of Taksim, Beyoğlu. I saw one semi-café, semi-collectioner old building and the front was like french cafés. There was only one customer in the café side which she was using minibook, can be Asus EEE PC 10 inch, and she was typing in the DOS or something. I found this so excited and at the same time weird because seeing a woman with fashion glass, dress, nails and with a minibook, DOS not a typical/everyday thing. I think she was novel writer because I got that vibe from her and found this very interesting because I have never seen a minibook in real life for past eight years since 2012-ish times.

I just took out my dads old Acer, i always remember it being quite snappy. Bought in early 2009, used up until 2015 or so. Anyway, my dad had rendered it unusable, he had way too many programs on it than it is designed for, it would constantly restart itself,, but a fresh install of Win 7 and bam, it works beautifully. Im not going online with it, for now i just put Ultimate DooM/ Doom 2 and Warcraft 2 on it, could be a nice setup for some classics of my GOG library and perhaps Snes emulation. :)

My Dell mini 10's charging port also went bad. Lucked into a $3 replacement on ebay a couple years back. Must be a common failure on netbooks. I always meant to get a DDR2 800 module for it bc I think it shipped with DDR2 533 Interesting the Aspire One has a blower cooler. The mini 10 is passive, so it's a toasty boy unfortunately. Does have a very nice trackpad though and no soldered RAM. I'll try to dig it out to run 3dm2001se and report back lol Atom N270 is single core (hyperthreaded) btw :)

Look at that, you're right! When I picked up my original Aspire One back when they were new, one of the selling points from the sales guy was that it was a low power dual core processor... and I never went back to verify! Thanks for the correction. And let me know how yours does in the benchmark!

I used an EeePC back in 2009. I think it was the 700. I installed Ubuntu which was faster than XP on it because it hits the disk a lot less. Used it while travelling for business. That said, it was just too slow to do anything, even compile basic code, and the keyboard and trackpad were both horrid. Solid it on ebay.
@PNPRetro
@PNPRetro 2 года назад
I think the only coding I did on my 700 was qbasic. The keyboard and TouchPad were definitely not fantastic, but I felt like they did okay with the space they had. Mine was mostly used for basic browsing, media consumption, and gaming. So nothing too serious.

2:15 - Seriously? Take the whole thing apart? My Acer Aspire One D150-1Bb must be a later and improved model, the RAM and HDD are each accessible by a single cover underneath. Likely newer because mine came with 1GB on board, replaced with a 2GB DDR2 stick. 5:35 - I tried installing Linux (various 32bit versions) and nothing worked. I'm putting ArcaOS (OS/2 descendant) on mine to run OS/2 and Lose 3.11 applications. For fun, not productivity, and offline only.

Dont try installing Windows 10 on these Acer netbook. From a licence point of view, you can still do a free upgrade from Win7 starter (on my Acer One D250 and D260) and it will work. But, it will be so miserably slow you will hate it. And upping the RAM to 2Gb and SSD replacement make a fat load of difference. Control alt Del reveals the Atom 1.6 cpu is running 100% of the time when doing nothing.

at 06:08 (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FFRVx4_4mLI.html) you talk about video playback. i've got exactly the same machine (although a white one) and while tinkering with it i've found out that: 1. vlc is too "heavy" (i know, it's weird) 2. 1080p playback is just too much for this little guy. BUT - if you limit yourself to 720p and use Media Player Classic (HC or BE) it runs well enough for video to be watchable. weird thing with VLC is that it's (also) based on ffmpeg - just like MPC, but it's still too much to play (720p) video smoothly. conversely MPC does the job! so - with standard VGA out this machine could easily become 720p media player. cheers! 😎
