basically you're getting a large screen android tablet for a fraction of the cost (big touchscreen, android apps), with USB connections added to that. You may loose the practical portability of a tablet (with the attached keyboard), but does that really apply when you're buying a 15" tablet? You can't expect it to do high performance stuff with this price tag, but you can't with a budget Windows laptop either. I was always skeptical about Chromebooks, but I'm starting to see their value.
Buy it and combine it with shadow cloud gaming pc and BOOM!!! You got basically a 2000 dollar pc for cheap. Shadow pc cost 12 a month at lowest and chromebooks are cheap.
Chromebook are not able to download or install any third party apps. You can download images from google images or download apps from play store. You are strict if you use this notebook

This laptop is $250 right now at Target in the U.S.. Was going to purchase it but Lon mentioned problems with video, which would be one of my primary uses. So I might save up a little more money and get the Intel Pentium N4200 or the Celeron N3350 model instead - just to get that extra bit of longevity out of the laptop. Unless google comes out with software improvements to help alleviate the software/hardware bottlenecks Lon talks about.
The H264ify browser extension is the remedy he references in the video. It does make a huge difference in RU-vid performance, but Google really should work with companies to make sure their premier service works fine with the default VP9 format.

Disappointing performance, and a lot of new low cost Chromebook are going AMD over Intel, and the quality of Chromebooks are suffering because of it. Really hope that if they choose AMD, it's Ryzen only since everything AMD before Ryzen was really bad.

I need another Chromebook and have found here in the UK an Acer Chromebook 315-3HT but this comes with an Intel Pentium processor. This is £349. I take it the Intel Pentium is a better prospect than the AMD A4/A6?
Am I the only one that hates touchscreens on a notebook that obviously has a touch pad, and the ability to add a mouse if you want? I mean, what's the point? It's just not necessary. If given the option, I will take the non-touch screen.

Question regarding the support for devices and their expiration for Google support. Is the way that Neverware's Chromium OS works a way to keep support for a chromebook that has "expired" from the official chrome OS supported devices? Is installing Neverware's Chromium OS on a chrome book the same as putting it onto an old laptop (install from a USB drive during boot-up)? Thanks!
You can use other operating systems on Chromebooks, but it's a process I wouldn't recommend unless you know what you're doing. There's a simple safe option that involves enabling Developer Mode and running some terminal scripts to set up Ubuntu, Kali, or Debian (and only one of those three) as a dual-boot with Chrome OS. And then there's a complicated process to get Windows (or any OS) on a Chromebook that involves flashing a BIOS that supports installation of other operating systems (where you then can install them like any other computer).
I would try the Ubuntu option with XFCE desktop, or if you do the hack-y method regarding the BIOS, use Peppermint OS as it's a lightweight cloud-centric Linux distro.
I have this type, mine is all metal, the hinge is different and it has an Intel chip. I can charge from either type c ports. The only thing I hate, is that the micro SD sticks out just enough, that I keep popping it out when taking it out of my backpack or moving it. Other than that, I'm happy with it and battery is awesome.
Monstar 831, I have the same Intel powered CB 15 with the metal case. I bought it on sale last year for $250. This new model seems to be a downgrade in many ways. I’m glad mine has a backlit keyboard.
Try the "H264ify" browser extension. It forces RU-vid to serve content in H.264 format instead of VP9. H.264 is typically hardware accelerated on all machines these days and gives much smoother playback than VP9.
@@dave4shmups Do a search on Google for "H264ify" and the first couple results should link to Chrome and Firefox's add-on page for it. It works so well I use it on all machines, even my gaming PC. Essential for Chromebooks, until Google gets VP9 working better.
Never understood the point of Chromebooks except maybe for students strapped for cash who do hell of a lot of word processing all day. Just configuring, securing and carrying around a machine is enough of burden these days to make it not really worth the limited flexibility of Chrome OS. Might as well spend an extra $200 for a budget Windows machine.
I have owned an Acer C720 Chromebook for 7 years now. I also own another newer Acer Chromebook as well as a Windows laptop. I hardly ever get on Windows anymore. The Chromebook, especially the newer has much more capability than you give credit for. The newer one, for instance, I have set up to go between Chrome OS and Linux. I use Linux more for a few games and specialty GIS mapping software. Otherwise, I probably can do more on my Chromebook than you are able to do without the risk of viruses! Show me a seven year old laptop computer that you own that is still running!
Mightbe Sherwood That’s assuming you don’t have any data or specific requirements...in which case there are also iPads, Android tablets and Macs. Not interested in how well a machine is going to be holding up in 7 years, at that point even if you have the thing, the replacement cost is extremely low and more so if it was a budget machine when new. You can run whatever flavor of Linux on a Windows machine and a sandboxed virtual machine of Windows but that isn’t always feasible on a Chromebook. I have a MacBook Pro that is 8 years old and still works...
Decent cheap 2-in-1 devices make sense. Think of it this way, you get a decent Android tablet that also has a full-fledged experience via Chrome OS and Linux apps - and most of them charge on the same cable as your phone.
@@carpettunnel8837 Peppermint OS is an excellent option to convert older machines into "Chromebooks". Native Linux app support, plus a webapp creation utility that can use either Firefox or Chromium.
@@PlusSizeDemon93 Get the one from Walmart that's $179 right now, Celeron 4000, 4 gigs DDR4, etc. Screen isn't as high res but runs everything flawless and fast. Speakers are loud, not overly so.
I just purchased an ACER 315 Chromebook, and I have purchased two different adapters in an attempt to extend my display to a tv. A USB to HDMI woudn't work. And a USB-C to HDMI would not work. I connected my previous Chromebook without any issue to tvs in the past, so I am not sure what I need to do with this new Chromebook. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. ~Joy
Got one for 150 brand new, does all I need. Big screen is nice. I don't have the touch display as far as I know. But touch pad is great for scrolling etc. Nice review. Appreciate the tips.
Just got one of these with the celeron 4020 processor in it for only 130 dollars on newegg. Can't beat a chromebook with a touch and 1080 display for sub 150.
I have watched a few of reviews on this laptop and I don't see any complaints about how the upload unloading process on this lap top. I brought it just to upload photos and videos of kids for my photography hobby and I have to manually save each photo into the laptop and it only saves them to a Google gallery I had to create to set up the laptop. I didn't plan to buy Photoshop or Lightroom software on it. There is not really a photo gallery on the laptop but, you can store photos into a file. However, you can not view the photo as you select it from the file and from the laptops gallery the way you can with HP laptops. My videos do not upload automatically from a camera or my cell phone either. I tried to upload it manually and it only saved as something I can't view and not as a video. I've used $600 HP desktop in 2006 and 2011 and 2013 and I was able to store over 8,000+10,000 photos and long videos into the desktop and on $600 lap tops photo galleries. This laptop comes with no instructions on what do to to upload quickly or how to use the laptop when it comes to quickly uploading just using a cord and a device. It's said to be for college students who store documents and I didn't research before I purchased it. I just assumed most laptops have an easy process with it comes up uploading photos and videos. The processor is slow and it takes 60+90+ seconds to save a photo on this laptop and I can deal with that. But, Imagine having 2,000 photos on a professional cameras that runs on a battery and manually uploading each photo into a computer only to not be able to see it in a gallery on the laptop and I can't see the photo as I share it to FB. I can only see for example "IMHG_0978" . HP shows you the photo from their files. This one doesn't. I feel owned by Google. They are already making animations and GIFs of photos because I have to use Google Gallery to see and edit my photos. And Google will charge people after so many photos. And you can't save photos on Google after you have so many photos.
Great review. I just purchased one from BestBuy for about a hundred and sixty bucks. I like the size, the addition of USB type three ports and the two USB type C ports. I will use this only for casual computing - my main computer is a fairly powerful Dell desk top model. I like the screen size of the Acer 325 since I am getting a bit old and working with an 11 inch screen of my previous Samsung Chromebook was difficult. And, oh yes, I do like the price!
As cheap as this laptop is, you're still overpaying for it. Wait a little longer, save a bit more, and get something leaps and bounds better. I bought this Chromebook as a temporary solution while I moved around a lot. I knew I was going to take a significant hit in performance, but not this much. It runs like a fat kid.

Being in Canada your US only affiliate links are not usable for . I your international audience to Acer Canada and found that the Canadian models are under different model numbers as well. www.acer.com/ac/en/CA/content/models/laptops/acerchromebook315 So it is still not clear which model you are talking about (All the descriptions indicate a 768 resolution and not the 1080 oyu hae indicated for example) for your international audiences. I am assuming you are referring to the 45WV international model but from the description the only differences I can see is the amount of memory included. The model description for the CB315-2H-2343 and the new CB315-2H-45WV have the same descriptions and a $50 price difference. Given the exchange and markup tis ends up being a $CDN laptop for moderate performance. I find it difficult oto justify this given tat I can get a Windows laptop with 20% more graphics performance for the same price. I am going to wait for the next level of Chromebook to come down in price.

Thanks for the informed video. I purchased the intel model of this laptop and i am able to run 1080p fine and and set videos to 4k on youtube and they run fine also, so the issue with the AMD model does not seem to be present with the intel model, just a fyi for anyone looking at the intel version. Also this version does have a touch screen.
which one should i get? i would like to get the cheaper one but if the one that costs more is worth it for the money i’ll get the better one please let me know
@@Ahsxan i would definitely go with the intel model if you are concerned at all about video playback. Also, the touch screen on the intel model is handy, ive never owned a laptop before and find it nice to have. I cant say for certain if the amd model has a touch screen or not

They can all handle RU-vid, the problem is with Google using VP9 format by default. Install the H264ify Chrome extension and it fixes the problem by forcing RU-vid to serve you H.264 format instead.
@@markh8901 It happens with Firefox, too. It's kind of a problem with both things. The VP9 format isn't usually hardware accelerated (or isn't accelerated well) by most browsers. Microsoft Edge seems to be the best in performance and I don't think I've ever gotten dropped frames with VP9 on Edge. You can test it yourself by playing a video that you've noticed skipping before. While it plays: right click the video and select Stats for Nerds. Look for Viewport/Frames. On the rightmost side is X dropped of Y (Y being total frames). Do this in any browser you'd like to test (you can see what format it's serving in the Codecs part, H264ify forces RU-vid to serve you avc1/mp4a --- which is typically hardware accelerated in every browser, operating system, and machine hardware). Use the little X button at the top right of the Stats for Nerds box to close it.
@@AAWinnerMichaelCaine Thanks I tried, the extension did help but not by too much. If without it and frame dropped 10fps it would help down to 0fps. I didn't do a lot of test with my Chromebook 14 cb3-431(N3160). This chromebook handles 1080p quite well so I tested on 2k video, 4k....asking way too much ^^;; Do you have a a good video I could test on? I used the Aquaman trailer for the test. The scene he was driving and consumed by a tilde wave and had to save his father and met the princess ...It was the scene where all 3 of them stood together and camera started to close in on them, the frame dropped in 2k and the extension helped.
@@markh8901 Compression works best with stillness, so any video with a lot of motion or variance will be a better stress test. If there's choppiness with 2K or 4K content, I'd say it's probably just a weakness of the hardware itself. 1080p H.264 format is what to expect good performance from with any machine (even Raspberry Pi computers handle it fine). Anything higher in quality may need better hardware.
my acer chromebook was 400$ (with shipping) not a touchscreen. it works well. it is pretty fast. i use it for school and for homework and youtube. its nice. it works.
If you see one of these CPUs on a windows laptop, run far far away. Absolutely horrendous. Lon, I'd like to see a video on the Cloudready Chromium OS for laptops
I'd go with Peppermint OS for any situation where you want to make a "Chromebook" out of any machine. It's super lightweight and has a nifty feature to make web apps of any site and have them along with your native Linux apps (and you can set this feature up with either Firefox or Chromium as per your browser preference).
Looks like a nice option if it can be born-again into running straight Linux without the google chrome "features". Lots of Acer laptops work well for that. Some even allow for upgrading the SSD HD. Too bad Lon has to send this back. Presumably Acer would rather he didn't take it apart and see what he can get away with.
My Chuwi chinese tablet (touchscreen and fanless of course) runs Windows 10 (latest version even after 2 years), 1 USB-C and 1 microUSB, microSD, 1920x1280 resolution, 4/64GB, plays 1080p without issues, is good after 2 years, and I can use as a secondary monitor with Wifi on Windows... and it costs US$ 214
No third party apps cannot be install to to chromebook even if you wana download free movies or games on steam. You can however yes download google images picture or install games from apps store.
