I just tried this out today in person for the first time at Computex and the effect was actually pretty cool! It would be awesome to use it in all games, I'd definitely consider it if it worked everywhere.
Yeah, I thought it was good too. The supported game list is growing. What we need is other manufacturers to start making them so the market penetration is bigger. Enjoy Computex!!
I remember playing Borderlands 2 in Nvidia 3d vision and the visual effect was amazing. It did half the frame rates, but the game was still very playable. I prefer this type of setup to VR as wearing a headset is very tiresome after a while. Really hope this technology becomes widely adopted.
Thanks for your input! Yes, I hope they can bring the cost of entry lower so more can take advantage of its. Most of the naysayers haven't even tried it...
This is really cool. Reminds me of the Nintendo 3ds! I would love to see this catch on. I'm shocked to see this on Acer first, but hey maybe others will follow suit.
This special edition was launched in Dec 2021. By comparing to 40 series, it's a little bit outdated. This year Acer will launch a upgraded generation Helios 3D 15, but it's still a limited version. I'm wondering will you test Helios 16/18 or new Triton series in future reviews? Thanks.
I got the newer version (of course by now I would imagine this is an ancient laptop being 1 year old) but I got it around $1500. Would that be a good price for a laptop this caliber in today’s standards?
Really cool stuff. Unfortunately the price for it isn't quite there yet, and based on past precedent of 3d always being a dud (with the possible exception of the 3DS which sold many millions of units) , I'm not too optimistic.
Price is definitely an issue. Personally I think this is $1000 too expensive. It certainly works well, as good as it was with the Nvidia 3D vision glasses, Perhaps even better as those glasses always darkened the image.
@@OWNORDISOWN Do you have any incoming Predator Helios 18' that were announced all the way back at Ces? That is a laptop i've been interested in, but it is seemingly nowhere to be found (atleast in N.A). There is a 4060 model at Best Buy that seemingly just become available for order, but otherwise there has been very little in the way of next gen Acer Helios Predator laptops being reviewed and sold. Also i assume none of those will have this "Spacial" technology for 3d right, it has to be specific models with this technology (unfortunately likely with a commensurate ~$1k price gouging on top of the otherwise identical specs).
@@slickrounder6045 I will ask if they have one. They are announcing the Triton 16 today, but its not 3D. I think the only 3D gaming machine is the Helios 300 and that will have the RTX 4080
But what do you think about using a VR headset for a regular gaming laptop instead of having a 3d screen which is obviously going to be less expensive.
Hi Stephen, could it be described as something like a much larger 3DS type effect? I do still use my 3DS XL regularly and have always liked it when games are made to really look good in 3D with it.
Hey Teddy, I have only used the 3DS once and must say the effect on this Helios is better. In SOTTR it is fantastic. Hey, the review on the X370 will be up next week.
@@OWNORDISOWN Oh that's brilliant news re Clevo, cheers mate. With a 4080 minimum and a 13980HK minimum (I need unlocked I like multiplier control), I'd be interested in something like this. I really hope they get it to 500 nits though.
@Teddy M I measured 486 nits (4k panel). It failed latencymon....it is the first next gen laptop that had no issues. No stuttering. The CPU did run hot, hitting 97 to 100 deg C in Extreme performance mode. Entertainment mode was low 90s/high 80s and performed slightly faster than an OC 4080 I would say. The 4090 was probably about 10% faster than a 4080. The tuning HIDEVOLUTION did definitely make it feel real snappy. You can alter the multipliers and power limits in the software. Also undervolt, but for some reason it didn't seem to work. Didn't show up in HWINFO64 and didn't make any difference to the CBR23 score or lower temperatures. I even tried Throttlestop with same result...small 280w power brick. Surprised it wasn't a 330w but seemed OK. Webcam muc picks up lots of background noise. Nice laptop. Fans on loud side, quiet mode is like 38 Db but CPU is 15w which makes gaming a no go.
@@OWNORDISOWN Ok interesting, did you test latencymon with windows high power scheme? I'll wait to see full review but the undervolting is a bit of a deal breaker as it really helps with 13th gen. Do multipliers hold at least? I don't care if temps are 98 if it's like putting maximum watts to the cpu, but if they are 98 and it's 40 watts like the Razer, then it's an issue. I have to really wait to just see the review and HW info and all that. 280w brick is also a real surprise. I am really thankful and happy you have spent time with one for sure. I owe you one. PS you should see the latest Asus Scar 17 with Ryzen 7945HX, best latencymon I have ever seen on a laptop. Just 2 green segments at most, and like 200 was the highest peak. Amazing.
@Teddy M I did check out that Scar and reviewed it, didn't test latencymon though. I have always said the AMD systems do best with it. I didn't test the multipliers as I literally had to test it all in one day. Changed the power limits OK. I think you will like the system, it's not like the Razer reducing its watts unless you use quiet or power saver mode.
I've tried various devices with 3D displays before and I feel like any kind of 3D effect is useless in a small laptop displays (or other things with small displays like handheld devices) with their limited field of view - I was always aware that I am playing game on small flat display no matter how good the depth effect was, so it didn't make me feel more "immersed" in any way. I'd much rather put that extra $1000 (the cost of having such option on this laptop) towards proper VR goggles. Especially since this SpacialLabs thing does not list VRChat or any other existing socialization-oriented multiplayer games as "Supported game title".
I think its a question of price. I would pay a bit of a premium to have glasses free 3D, perahsp an extra $200 or $300. Certainly not an extra $1000. The problem with 3D before was that you needed the glasses. These glasses made the image darker too. One can say the same about VR. At teh start it was expensive but as the price dropped it has become more popular. True, it will never be mainstream but at least you can turn it off and on easily.
I don't get it. Why does Acer keep producing horrible shell design. Like just go with the concept D series lineup. Instead they want to keep that 2009 alien industrial look that screams gamer.. It doesnt look clean and its cream ugly and bulky.
$3500 to have a 3D display, but not a webcam at least in 1080p. In my opinion it is embarrassing how we focus on making news about certain marginal technologies, while not improving what users really need...
@@DanielMazzthere is a new one with the Rtx 4080. Not sure what difference there is with the screen though. I was a user of the Nvidia 3d vision glasses and the image was darker wearing those. With this laptop I didn't have that issue. Much better solution, although I used to use the glasses for my 3d projector which was cool.
hello, I just want to ask which laptop would you recommend? i7-9750h with 1650 or ryzen 7 3750h with 1660ti. This is the only option I have, because it's the only cheap laptop I could find here.
I have been following your channel for quite some time now. If you require a video editor for your channel, please do let me know. Thank you very much.
Thanks for the offer! Unfortunately my channel brings in hardly any money at all. I'm going to be moving to content that requires only small amounts of editing and no scripts so I spend less time on that stuff and more time on testing and uploading.
I own this laptop. Spatial labs go is surprisingly good at converting 2D video to 3D. I think it enhances the viewing experience, whether it’s animated content or real footage
