Great videos, appreciate your in-depth knowledge and careful attention to each of your maple babies. I have a few training for Bonsai-amateur only but I so like their habits, their quiet seasonal growth and the early spring appearance. I repot every year, just to take stock of soil condition and prune back to a couple of buds, with early spring fertilization, they respond with some strength. There is much you can do with these maples. Thank you for your time.
2nd time I've watched this video and I just saw the Aka Omote for the first time. I have it, but I've never seen anyone else having it. Actually I sold it to a co-worker and then a year later, I traded him some red japanese for it once I realized how often I didn't see it. Love it!!
I like all of those and thank you for the list. I don't consider Green Cascade, Fairy Lights or Oregon Fern, to be weeping . They are more of a spreading structure. By the way, I watch and enjoy all of your videos. It's nice to see so many mature specimens. I often reference your videos for form and color on maple cultivars that I'm considering to observe.
i am currently in year 2 of trying to germinate some japonicum seeds. Much harder than palmatums! from a batch of about 60 seeds last year, 3 months cold stratification none have germinated. the seeds are going through another winter now so hopefully in a few more months i will have some seedlings
I was wondering how to spell the name of the first cultivar that you show. It's interesting that you see Aconitifolium all over the place, but I think I only found one other home that has it where I live in southern CT. I just planted it this year. I wish I had more space on my property to plant more Acer japonicum cultivars.
Are you growing them in pot? or some in ground. My preference so far is Acer Japonicum aconitifolium. I love the light green colour (but somehow in your vid it's very dark green, could be the way it's recorded and the cloudy weather). Only thing i'm scared of it's that it will reach 4 meter super fast (neighbour doesnt want), and the general read is 'don't prune acer palmatum/japonicum).
I grow both in the pot and in the ground. I like Aconitifolium but it's fairly common. It does flush a nice light green but turns darker in the summer. This tree does grow quite fast but it can be pruned. I would agree that it tends to have a nice structure without pruning but it certainly can be pruned.
@@maplecollector4398 Trust me, in belgium it's not common, especially in front visible gardens, it's also only for sale in true specialists, other Acer palmatums like blood good you see everywhere. I like that it also always has some open space, to let light true, even big, this means it not as 'wild' as some other trees. My other favorite bush at the moment is 'Corylus Maxima Purpurea', most beautiful red leaves i've seen yet, especially early on yet, and accept pruning like nothing, grows fast, and can grow nuts. Took me a while but started to see them in gardens :) Still searching for Aconinitifolium. Maybe in fall they will be easier to spot.
@@Matti6950 I'm sure that its availability is different in other parts of the world. In California it's the most common cultivar of Acer japonicum. It would be accurate to say that it's nowhere near as popular as many of the red palmatums or Sango kaku.
Acontifolium is my favorite. Maybe it's from a lack of seeing other Japonicums. The first time I saw the amazing fall color of Acontifolium I was blown away.
@@maplecollector4398 I'm in Oklahoma so you dont see them here. I just started collecting this last year when I bought a new house. I'm up to 21 different cultivars but no Japonicums yet. What is your favorite upright? Next year I'm putting in a new JM bed on the north side of the house. I have little shade until I can plant some shade trees.
My favorite upright japonicum is probably 'O taki'. Doesn't your house provide shade on the northern side? Eastern exposure is ideal for most Japanese maples.
@@maplecollector4398 I'll check that one out. Yes that's why I'm adding a large JM bed there on the North next year. I'm also adding Seiryu, Hefners Red, Emperor 1, and shishagashira on the East side next year. I bought those through Mr Maple at their black Friday sale. They are sitting on my back patio right now until Spring. Thanks for your help!
I'd be interested to see a video series on the differences between Japanese Cultivars that all look similar. For example a video on red dissectums going over the differences between Crimson Queen, Tamukeyama, Inaba Shidare, Red Dragon and Red Filigree Lace because they all look the same to me.
That is a good idea but I've given most of my red dissectums away. You're right. They're too similar. If I was doing this 5 years ago, when I was still comparing them, I could have done it. I would be happy to answer questions about them though
@@maplecollector4398 Honestly, I just see them all over my neighborhood and I’d like to be able to tell people what they have. I’m not that interested in reds anymore. I have a Bloodgood, my first maple I planted, then I really started studying maples... I'm into (obsessed) with all the variegated and reticulated maples now.
