I have a Moonrise and am in zone 5b here in northern Utah. I had one in western WA and loved it and was happy to find out it would work here. It’s done well and I sited it carefully. It gets half day sun. I am hoping to add a Fireglow next spring.
Autumn moon is one of my favorites! Unfortunately mine has leaf damage from weather about a month ago here in Oklahoma. We had crazy rain and wind for about a month. Every leaf is wilted and crispy 😥
What is Johins level of sun tolerance? I found a nice sized one but I get some afternoon sun up here in Oregon. I'm so in love with Shirasawanums right now.
Thanks for the video. I was wondering how much direct sunlight autumn moon can take per day. I am in planting zone 7A in the northeast. It does sometimes get in the 90's here but it is very humid.
Hi, do you train and trim your tree? How often do you watering? I just bought 8 one gallon japanese maples and I planing to plant them in container. Please make a video how you manage them. Thank you for sharing.
Hello, I do train and trim my trees when necessary. The amount of watering that you should do is based on heat, humidity, sun exposure, soil, type of container and container size. As you can see, there are too many factors to give a definitive answer to that question. That being said, I water my smaller pots twice a week in the summer and larger pots get once a week. I will do a video on this in the near future.
I’m in Austin and my autumn moon does not perk upright. The leafs kind of hangs down. But no burns, might be the humidity and heat? It gets 1/2 day full sun.
Thank you. The leaves on 'Orange Dream' are smaller and more dissected. 'Orange Dream' is also more yellow than orange. What orange it does have, when the leaves first flush, quickly fades. 'Autumn Moon' is more sun tolerant than 'Orange Dream'.
does the autumn moon grow fast?do you think 1 gallon is too small ? I am not sure what’s shape the tree will display finally ,because I plan to put one before front door of my house .
Could you tell how old and tall those 2 trees are? I would like to get online a Moonrise that is in a 2 gal pot and 3-4 years old. Cannot figure out how tall it is at this age. Thank you for your video, you make me want them both!
Trees purchased online will not likely be anything like these trees. They are typically pruned so that they will fit into a shipping box. These trees were purchased online but they have a few years of growth added. You will also get different sized trees from different sources regardless of the age and pot size. If you need to know the size, best to call them and ask. Many online nurseries will send you a picture of the tree before they send it. Autumn Moon is a slow to moderate grower while Moonrise is a pretty fast grower. I hope that helps.
@@maplecollector4398 I ordered a specimen that is 3-4 years old. It sounds like it will be a long wait to get it anywhere as nice as yours. Thank you for your reply!
I'm in zone 10a but my days are rarely in the 90's. USDA zones only indicate how cold it gets, not how hot it gets. My summer days average in the mid 70's but it's windy, dry and there's a high U.V. index.
Use something that drains well. Cactus mixes are usually good. I've used Kellogg Tree and Shrub Mix in the past . Miracle Grow potting soil doesn't drain fast enough.
