This video shows you how to take apart the ACER ZC-605 AiO computer so you can replace the CMOS battery or upgrade the RAM or HDD. This also applies to the Gateway ZX4665g-UW31, which is the same computer just branded Gateway rather than ACER.
Taking the back cover off is really annoying and I struggle a bit with it.
There's also some unexpected hassle from the DVD drive tray, but this video will expose possible problems and guide you through everything I encountered.
A special thanks to Kitt Condrey-Miller - who pointed out that the DVD-RW drive can be removed to get the cover off - rather than pulling off the plastic part I removed...
There is a screw for the DVD-RW drive under the small back cover that is removed first. Look down the side with the drive there's a screw between two plastic posts. Remove that screw and slide out the entire drive - no need to remove the plastic plate on the end of the tray.
Brilliant!
And get a spudger rather than use a knife like I did...
The changes to RU-vid now mean that I don't get any advertising revenue from my videos - I have the views, but I need over 1000 subscribers.
I'm never going to get rich from this, but it is nice to get something... So if you've watched this video then you can buy me as coffee using the Ko-fi link, click Like or click Subscribe. Or all three!

Thanks for the video I was going crazy trying to remove the cover. I noticed one thing that hopefully will help someone, there is a screw for the cd/dvd drive under that small back cover that you removed first. Sight down the side with the drive and you will see a screw between two plastic posts. Remove that screw and slide out the dvd drive. All good to go. Just saw this almost by accident otherwise your video was very helpfull thanks

Really handy tip... If I could give 100 thumbs up I would! In hindsight I should've guessed something was up when the plastic drive drawer panel didn't come off easily. I'll update the description... thanks! Removing the CD drive on a laptop is actually one of the first things I do if I need to get inside... so should spotted the plastic tray end and thought the same thing.

Thank you for your video. It was very helpful. Removing the back is very tough, but your comments reassured me that I wasn’t destroying the machine. My particular project was to increase. The RAM to 16GB. As a total novice, I was worried. Your calm approach was spot on. I can identify with the swear words you edited out. Computer is up and running, recognizes the memory and away I go. Great project when you are confined to home.

The RAM can be upgraded... there are two SODIMM sockets - one is populated on the model in the video. See 14:40 - just below the triangular heatsink on the right hand side. If you put your model number into a site like Crucial then it’ll tell you your options. Or check the specifications of the existing RAM using CPU-Z.

@sterntechdaddy
@sterntechdaddy 4 года назад
At 14:40 I remove an internal cover plate to reveal the motherboard. There is a copper heat pipe that runs from the upper left of the motherboard, down to a triangular shaped heat sink. Directly below that on the motherboard you'll see the SODIMM sockets - where the RAM goes. In the video you can clearly see one module - with the silver retention clips on either side. If you then look closely, you can see that there's another two clips poking out below them. So this model has two SODIMM sockets. You can either pop your model number into a sales site like Crucial or check the main specifications on the ACER web site - using a site like Crucial is easier... but once you know the compatible RAM you can go an look for the best prices. Or just buy it from them if you are looking to upgrade the RAM. Replacing the mechanical HDD with an SSD is a better first upgrade though - especially if your already has 4GB or more RAM - and you can simply clone the existing drive over in a few clicks. :)

Can the processor be upgraded? I have an 8gb ram but the processor is only 1.9ghz
@sterntechdaddy
@sterntechdaddy 3 года назад
I'd say no, but it depends upon how determined you are... If the CPU is in a socket then, technically, you could swap it out for another one. I haven't got this PC available to check as it belonged to a customer, and I can't see in the video as the CPU is under the cooling. If it is soldered directly onto the the motherboard then there's absolutely no chance you can upgrade it. If it is socketed then you actually have to find a replacement and the motherboard needs to support it - which is problematic for all sorts of obvious reasons. Remember that when this PC was first sold, it worked fine... so have a think about your reason for upgrading. Fitting an SSD will breath new life into it, and optimising by removing running programs and services will also help. Bottom line is that this PC won't be playing the AAA games, but it'll able to keep up with you regardless of how fast you are at typing.

@sterntechdaddy
@sterntechdaddy 3 года назад
16GB is the maximum according to Crucial. See here: uk.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/acer/aspire-zc-605 It has 2 DDR3 SODIMM slots, so you'll be looking a 2 x 8GB modules at the stock frequency of 1600Mhz or PC3-12800. Hope that helps.

@sterntechdaddy
@sterntechdaddy 3 года назад
RAM - yes, there will be a maximum supported by the chipset. CPU - probably not, but that isn't really necessary if you're not doing CPU intensive stuff like video creation, etc. But a more cost effective upgrade is to swap out the mechanical hard drive for an SSD. If yours has 4GB RAM anyway then putting an SSD in will make an instant difference. And its really easy... this video shows you how to get access to the existing drive. And this one shows you how to clone it onto an SSD. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VPjwuvGmsTY.html :D

@@AMABELTVHD There's a balance between repair and replace. I usually do a bit of maths to see if repairing is worth it compared to replacing. Remember that old hardware has a value... so I also check completed eBay listings to get an idea of what the old hardware is worth - which can then be offset against the cost of the new. :)

@@sterntechdaddy i want to ask you 1 more question about the performance of this computer Overall specification Can still use it in 2021? I think the CPU and DDR3-RAM may be too old or too slow?. I understand that it's been 7-8 years. But I saw that some people are older than this. I just want to ask someone who has knowledge in this field. Or someone who has experience. I have 1beep on startup. i don't know what it means. i try to search for bios version to see what 1 beep means but no any information. i think that sound come from internal speaker not from bios speaker. (if it has bios speaker on this models) but i think Normally computer not have any beep on start up.

@@AMABELTVHD I've been involved with a Facebook group helping local people donate their old laptops so they can be given to local schools - so the kids without can have access to online learning materials at home. This, plus nearly 35 years playing with computers means... Pretty much any older computer with a dual core CPU and 2GB RAM will run Windows 10. Mechanical hard drives are often the main performance problem - especially for laptops which tend to have the slower 5400 rpm type because they are better for battery life. In practical terms, having 4GB RAM and an SSD makes a massive improvement. I'd say the latest Microsoft minimum specifications for Windows 10 are a little optimistic, but remember that the old computer was new once... And if Windows 10 doesn't work then you can install one of the many version of Linux anyway - so older computers do have a use if you just want to general stuff like check emails, browse the Web and type a doc or two. Is the beep you get long or short? Because that matters...

@@elizabetharellano7976 Do you get any signs of life? LED's turning on, LED's flashing, fans noises, beeping... that sort of thing... Beeping would be good because that helps with diagnosis. The boot of a PC is road mapped... certain things happen at certain stages... around 90% actually happens before the screen is initialised and this hasn't really changed much since they were first created. Even when the PC can't tell you what's wrong with an onscreen error message it tries to communicate... usually using beeps or LED flashes. You can also force it to communicate attempt to see where in the boot cycle the error is. Simplest is just to remove the RAM - if it gives the 'no RAM' beep code then you know the fault is after the 'check RAM' stage. If it does the same thing then you know it's before. Power it down, turn off the mains, turn the mains back on and watch it carefully as you press the power button. IF the data on it is important (i.e. important AND not backed up) then I would remove the hard drive and put that to one side while you test.

(You'll be removing the hard drive for data security anyway if it's faulty beyond economic repair - and you can also eBay the RAM if you really want to) I'm not hopeful...

The covers need to fit properly.... and the computers need to be manufactured efficiently... so plastic panels with compression clips will always be a feature of AiO and laptop devices. They'll use a few screws just to hold things firmly, and for warranty - so people can't remove back covers without it being detectable. I'm just glad they don't glue everything shut like Apple do! And the back covers of AiO and laptop devices are actually really easy to remove if you have a spudger… ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Pen57kOJTx0.html Having the right tool for a job really helps!

@@hycron1234 You don't need the larger set that looks like it was bought from a dental supplier... you really only need the knife shaped one, and that cost less than £10 plus a bit for delivery. If I'd bothered to buy one 30 years ago, and you gave me £1 for every minute of time it would've saved me, then I'd probably be typing this on my massive yacht. It also reduces stress too - stabbing at a plastic cover with a knife is pretty dangerous - slip and you'll stab yourself - but also blades will scratch from slips, and the pressure some compression fittings need to pop open can cause the pointed blade to dent and mark the plastic. You can also apply excessive pressure if you're not in the right spot to pop the fitting - which happens a few times in the video - and basic physics says that Pressure = Force / Area. So a sharp blade will produce a lot more force than a blunt one - and you'll mark the plastic somewhere along the edge every time just because of that. Credit cards are a nice alternative, but they are a bit too flexible and bend when you don't want them to. So if you're doing this sort of repair for fun AND profit, then get yourself a spudger because it'll pay for itself the first time you use it. :)
