03 June 2024, Finally got tired of waiting 5 minutes for my computer to boot up and after viewing your clear and concise video I will upgrade my noisy and slow HDD to an SSD. Thank you for this excellent video.

This is a good teaching video. Those of you (not too many) who thought it was too long are (probably) not teachers. As a "Driver's Ed" instructor with 30+ years of experience it was just the right length with an appropriate amount of repetition. For my current skill level with computers it was a touch lengthy. For my 2008 skill level it was just what I needed. Plus, watching another teachers technique added to my own skills as a teacher. Thanks, Nerd Sidekick for your time and effort.

GLACIOUS13: As a teacher with 30 years of experience, since you clearly don't know too from to (it's too many, not to many), and you did it twice so it wasn't a typo, that seems pretty sad.

@@rogergeyer9851 You're absolutely correct! I've always had problems with that word. I've tried different mnemonics to help me yet still haven't nailed it down. Lol! To clarify though, I taught "Driver's Education" not "English" so... ...I do appreciate your bringing this to my attention though. I am not being sarcastic. This is about learning how to do it with ease and with a methodology that is based in throwing parallel explanations about cables, connectors, good closeups and a back screen explaining acronyms so if you teach others is more than understandable and very recommended that you do not asume people already know everything and give appropriate explanations and of course the video that could take 5min for advanced users is taking almost 30min but is like being in a classroom learning it with excellent explanations with s simple language and no rush or time crusade. For me it was excellent because I evaluated it as what it is, a learning video. Good job buddy.

Great tutorial video. Just one thing that I noticed was that it was quite a while into the video that you first mentioned anything about making sure that the power was disconnected from your computer. That is very important, especially for those that have little or no experience with this type of procedures. Like I mentioned, this is otherwise a very educational video. Keep up the good work!

If ya all felt you were wasting your valuable time with the first 14 min. as you knew all of that what the heck were you even watching this at all. There is so much that was left out that most beginners should have already known this much. Things like, DOES your software automatically set the OFFSET for SSD. I don't know about Samsung, but WD does not. How about UEFI? or DOES the software automatically partition for either MBR as opposed to GPT or does that have to be done. In other words, does it copy to UNALLOCATED space ONLY? I prefer MINI TOOL Partition Wizard myself. The only thing about it you need to know is that it does not automatically clone the BOOT portion (partition) on a GPT drive and that has to be done in a separate opperation.

I've been working at a body shop for a bit now and extra tips I learned was if you're painting the door, it's better to take off the mirror and belt molding (the trim at the bottom of the window) for a better paint job in the end. The mirror can get in the way, and if you're unlucky, the clear coat could stick in that gap between the door and the belt molding.

IMPORTANT NOTE: After cloning Windows OS you may need to re-validate your Microsoft OS and MS-Office as it will report that the Licence key isn't validated in most cases you will need to be online to allow the software to check the License validation server and validate don't forget this important step. With OS's like Linux this isn't necessary

What I did when I built my computer was put in mobile racks. These racks mount inside the computer and your hard drives go inside sleeves that slide into mobile racks. I just turn the computer off, take a key and insert it into the mobile rack and pull out the hard drive. I can clone my hard drive in about 20 minutes with Acronis True Image. There are other fine programs out there but this one I have been using for a long time. I keep 2 copies in rotation all the time. Security is the first think in computer operation. Enjoy your computer and keep it cloned....

Nice take on how to go from a regular HD to a SSD. For me the best take from your script was to always go to the new drive's web site and get the migration software there and it's free! We are the other side, the often builders of PC's and restoring Mac Pro computers so our down take was ... the many loose cables not tied together! LOL I suppose before they made windowed computer cases no one ever bothered to neatened up the inside. Now zip ties are part of the build. Restoring three Mac Pro computers, strangely there are few cables in the case. Oh and the direct connect cable to a loose sata hard drive is a wonderful tool for doing disk images with (no external case required and it's put back in it's original box once imaged).

I don't believe he didn't show changing the BIOS this is very easy to do and everyone should know how when the computer is starting it will show you what key to press to go into setup it's a different key on different computers (f2 on my present computer) then find something called boot device configuration press enter then go to the hard disk boot priority press enter (press enter again if you had more than one hard drive to give you the options to choose the one with your boot file on it) Then select as your first boot device. on my computer you can then press f10 "save and exit setup" or hit Esc until the save option comes up finish that and you should be good to go! note: if you had more than one hard drive it might be a good idea to disconnect the extra ones until you have completely finished the cloning process! Now in most cases even if you haven't done anyting in the bios it will probably still work finding the only hard drive that is there which is why and how this guys been getting away with this without telling you but if it didn't work you might be screwed until you figured out that you can always get into the computer bios while it is starting up! yeah sounds good to me humor!

I had a boss who was not at peace with "Let's get them glasses." His irritation with the need for glasses taught me pretty rapidly to put up with such simple difficulties. You covered being sure not to overwrite a disk with data you want to keep, but said if you're cloning onto a blank disc, there's nothing to worry about. How about this: If it's possible to clone to a disk with data on it, thereby losing that data, is it equally possible to engage the cloning software such that it tries to clone from your target disk to your source disk? If the software allows this, you could easily wipe your source disk! Thanks for the otherwise clear instructions. (By the way, it's amusing near the end to keep catching your reflection in a part of the tower.)

One trick you can do, assuming your Acronis etc. is not from your drive manufacturer is to temporarily add a third drive of the correct brand, you don't need to write to, or read from this drive, it's just there to make the software happy.

I just did a similar thing but cloned the boot Motherboard mounted 256GB NVMe to a 1GB NVMe I temporarily attached to a $17 PCle x4 card in a slot using the free utility called Macrium Reflect. It was very simple, as in idiot proof. Once done I switched the NVMe out and it booted immediately with zero issues. Interestingly I repeated this but instead using a USB-c attached standard 1TB SSD and took the resulting Clone to my iMac 5K and booted to the Windows 10 Pro SSD. It worked perfectly and all I had to do was add the Boot Camp drivers for that Mac. It can now run all the Steam Games that are also on the PC. Obviously not at the same time but very useful.

Sounds like you don't need to clone a drive. You just need to install the new 2TB drive as a second drive and move some files off the original drive to the new drive. You'll just have two drives in your system. The original will be the boot drive as always, and you can store your new files on the new drive. You can change where Windows stores documents by default, for example. Or photos or videos. And of course, you can put your files anywhere you want yourself. You aren't bound by the default location that Windows sets for those files.

A lot of computer cases still have bays for a 5 1/4 inch drive and they don't appear to be going away any time soon unless you like a more compact case. The fact is the larger cases that have them are just better if you have a place to put it. Mine is under the desk, just because they are known as desktops it doesn't mean they absolutely must be there!! I think the name desktop stuck around from days when PCs were flat horizontal boxes and that is why people still refer to them as such.

It's actually easier to copy via hardware! Software copying is unnecessarily complicated and likely significantly slower. Get a two-dock USB hard drive caddy. Most of them have the ability to throw your drive into the 'source' drive on the dock, and there's a 2nd drive space for the cloned drive to go into. And on the back of the device there's usually a button to engage the copying action. This copying is faster, because it can be done without a computer even attached! Here's an example listed on Amazon for the dock I have, which works just fine: "ORICO Dual Bay 2.5" 3.5" USB 3.0 to SATA Hard Drive Docking Station with Offline Duplicator and Clone Function [UASP Protocol and 2 x 12TB Supported]- Black" -- currently listing for $33ish.

Hi Phil, yes this should work. If you are trying to clone onto a HDD (the big, old spinning drives), it is possible the cable may not be able to sufficiently power that type drive. But if you are cloning onto a SSD, that should work just fine.

if your using this drive to boot from (C drive) then you might also want to look into ways to minimize excessive writes to ssd drive cuz they are only good for so many writes ... there other really good videos that cover this. if your just using it as extra space to run your favorite game from then you won't need to worry about excessive writes as much

Dude, any modern PC or Mac uses some type of SSD (e.g. NMVe) these days. Your spinny disk of yesteryear may in theory support more 'writes' but it can die anytime due to motors, boards, and so on not to mention be 10 to 100 times slower.

Same principle. Only this this depends on being able to boot your old drive from your external usb connection and the tools on your motherboard as well. Give it a try.

Great.... I'm not as savy as some of the know-it-all's (not even sure why they stop by) my new ssd just arrived. Looking forward to doing this with my new found knowledge.

Nice....The only thing you missed maybe is to have the fastest way to remove the c: drive (bootable) if you have more then 1 disk (4 maybe?)

Can a HDD/SSD be cloned without the physical target HDD/SSD, but be saved as an image(i.e. ISO file), for later use on any HDD/SSD?!

my question. Was you running Windows on the original drive while cloning it to the new drive? Or, did you use a different pc having both drives plugged to it to clone them?

This is so much easier, buy a data transfer unit with 2 slots and you can clone or just transfer and on Amazon there only $35 or less. Easiest way to do a transfer or a clone.

I did this recently. I had a usb backup. I disconnected the old hd and installed a new ssd. I made a windows boot usb stick and selected the clone hd option to copy from the backup to the new ssd. Took about 3 hours to copy.

Yes, this is kind of practice is works as well, in this case you not need any SATA power cables and/or some sort of USB-to-mSATA adapter-cables at all. Nice! 👌☺

Great video - just one thing, do I have to use the same brand SSD as the old hard drive in the old computer?

Cool theme music...LOL. Anyway I'm going to use your process, but can forgo a lot of the cabling. I'm cloning from my SATA HDD to an m.2 NVME. When It comes in I'll install it to the socket, so unless I'm wrong it should just show up in the 'Data Migration' software and I should be able to run it. Is that so? Anyway, Thanks for your info. You'll save me a ton of work. BTW I gave ya a thumbs-up and subscribed

THANKS for thia informative video hope it would help to the viewers. But for me, I'm frustrated of doing so, I've been following instructions through video from other RU-vidr, but unfortunately I didn't succed. My new SSD 950GB became unfunctional. I don't know what tricks they're doing for successfull cloning. A lot of suggestions but ends up to subscriptions and purchase (with free malwares and viruses), I was thinking I would get help, instead it worsen my problem. I'd rather buy a new laptop with SSD hard drive inbuilt. Anyway thanks for sharing Sir.

Will this work with an M.2 NVMe SSD? Also, if I in the future put back in my old drive for extra storage, will there be any complications or will it just be plug and play?

I put the older replaced "suspect" drive back in and it was recognized just fine. I'll just need to reformat it.

7:20 True if you use the manufacturer's free Image software. Paid Imaging software does not care what brand of drive you are cloning or backing up.
