A monoalkylacetoacetic ester is some what less acidic than acetoacetic ester itself .for this reason ,it is usually helpful to use stronger base such as pottasium tertiary butoxide instead of sodium ethoxide during the second step of alkylation

It is better use pottasium tertiary butoxide in place of sodium ethoxide in the second step of alkylation due to mono alky derivative is less acidic
